Detroit took an early 1-0 lead and maintained it with Casey Mize on the mound and the two AL opponents feeling each other out.
The bottom of the third inning brought with it a golden opportunity for Tigers left fielder Riley Greene to make a play on a ball that began drifting toward the cramped left field line of George Steinbrenner Field.

"RILEY GREENE IS RIDICULOUS," the Tigers' X account wrote, echoing the sentiments of Tigers announcer Jason Benetti as Greene made a spectacular catch leaping over a wall near the bullpen.

The account added an All-Star Game voting link for fans to support Greene.
"Amazing bat, amazing glove, he needs to be a career Tiger," one fan said with an orange heart emoji.
"MVP MVP MVP," another fan said.
"Greene's back must be killing him! Carrying Tork, Carp, Meadows, Colt, Sweeney, and others," another fan added.
"There's no way he's real man," another fan said.
The Tigers found themselves 8 1/2 games up on the second place Cleveland Guardians in the AL Central as the day continued with the Rays tying it up on a solo home run at 1-1.
Detroit is expected to welcome the Athletics to Comerica Park in Detroit on June 24.

‘Team Ronaldo' Palmeiras defender Murilo eyes win over Messi, vows to do ‘siu' celebration if he scores
Palmeiras defender Murilo has set his sights on cancelling out the threat of Lionel Messi when his side plays Inter Miami on Monday — in part because he is 'team Ronaldo'. The centre-back has played 90 minutes in each of his team's Group A matches so far, helping them keep clean sheets against Porto and Al Ahly. Advertisement Now comes a first-vs-second clash with the MLS outfit, and a chance to test himself against perhaps the greatest player of all time. Not that Murilo would describe Messi in those terms. He prefers the Argentine's great rival, Cristiano Ronaldo, as he admitted in Sunday's pre-match press duties. 'I'm team Ronaldo,' Murillo said when asked which player he holds in greater esteem. 'I think he's a really complete player. I think even his temper is good, a positive thing. I think what sets him apart is his discipline. I really try to emulate that — his discipline, his routine. I really like him.' Asked by reporters whether he would consider reproducing Ronaldo's trademark 'siu' celebration if he scores against Inter Miami, he responded in the affirmative. 'Yes,' he said. 'Yes, I'll do it.' As for the possibility of swapping shirts with Messi at the final whistle, Murilo said he was happy to let his team-mates fight over the momento. 'I'm not going to get involved in that,' he said. 'There are already a lot of people who are going to be asking for it. It's all good. I'm just focused on marking him.' Palmeiras face Inter Miami at the Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Gardens, at 3pm ET.

With Diamondbacks 'Swarmed' by Offers, Could Red Sox Win Bidding for Slugger?
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Boston Red Sox are still searching for answers at first base after Triston Casas' injury. Kristian Campbell took some reps over at the corner, but he isn't a long-term answer. Entering Sunday, Alex Cora's team was five games back in the American League East and held the final wild card spot, just a half-game ahead of the Cleveland Guardians and Seattle Mariners. Boston appears poised to push for the playoffs and add to its roster at the trade deadline. Josh Naylor could be an option for the Red Sox, as the Arizona Diamondbacks could move on from him if they fall out of contention, according to insider Bob Nightengale. TORONTO, ON - JUNE 19: Josh Naylor #22 of the Arizona Diamondbacks swings against the Toronto Blue Jays during the ninth inning in their MLB game at the Rogers Centre on June 19, 2025 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. More"The Arizona Diamondbacks' playoffs hopes continue to take body blows with co-closers A.J. Puk and Justin Martinez undergoing season-ending elbow surgeries, joining ace Corbin Burnes and starters Jordan Montgomery and Tommy Henry," wrote Nightengale. "If they're out of the race at the trade deadline, they'll be swarmed with calls seeking starters Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly, along with third baseman Eugenio Suarez, first baseman Josh Naylor and closer Shelby Miller." Entering Sunday, Naylor is off to a strong start this season with the Diamondbacks. The 28-year-old first baseman was hitting .302 with nine home runs and 49 RBI. He may not be on pace for the 31 bombs he hit a season ago, but the Red Sox would certainly be appreciative of his average and .822 OPS. Naylor would be the perfect fit for a team like the Red Sox. They need a first baseman, and adding Naylor would give them another left-handed bat in the lineup. Boston would be required to pay him the remainder of his $10.9 million salary this year before he becomes a free agent at the end of the season. While Casas is set to return next year from his injury, the Red Sox could even go as far as extending Naylor while dealing Casas for pitching. Ohtani bags strikeouts, home run as Dodgers rout Nats
Shohei Ohtani is congratulated by team-mates after a two-run home run in the Los Angeles Dodgers win over the Washington Nationals (Jayne Kamin-Oncea) Shohei Ohtani produced a dazzling all-round performance as the Los Angeles Dodgers came from behind to rout the Washington Nationals 13-7 on Sunday. Ohtani, making just his second appearance from the mound since undergoing elbow ligament surgery in 2023, bagged two strikeouts in an 18-pitch appearance at Dodger Stadium. Advertisement The Japanese superstar then followed up that lone inning with a huge offensive performance, blasting a three-run triple and a two-run home run as the Dodgers piled on the runs in the late innings to romp to victory. Ohtani, the reigning National League Most Valuable Player, only returned to pitching last Monday after a near two-year absence. The 30-year-old is being eased back into the pitching rotation by the Dodgers, who have restricted him to two single-inning pitching performances so far. Ohtani tore elbow ligaments just over two years ago and underwent Tommy John surgery, leaving him unable to pitch, although was still able to bat after joining the Dodgers on a 10-year, $700 million contract in December 2023. Advertisement Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Sunday that the team would continue to take a cautious approach with Ohtani's pitching as the season progresses. "Right now, he's good with one inning," Roberts told reporters. "It's just more trying to get a foundation, the building blocks, as he's taking at bats and getting an inning here, and an inning erring on the side of caution. "He's understanding where he's at, and where we're at. As time goes on we'll get to a certain point, but there's no sense in rushing it." Ohtani is widely regarded as a modern-day Babe Ruth, a rarity in baseball in that he combines elite hitting and pitching. Advertisement Last year he became the first player in history to score 50 home runs and nab 50 stolen bases in a season -- a statistical feat once regarded as unthinkable -- before helping the Dodgers win last year's World Series. Sunday's home run was his 26th of the season, a tally that has helped the Dodgers move to the top of the National League West division. rcw/bb
