British canoe champ started career in Chelmsford rivers as a boy
An athlete who has become the first Briton to win the K1 Senior Men's Canoe Marathon European Championships says the achievement is only beginning to sink in.James Russell, 27, said he started out by paddling on the two rivers running through Chelmsford - the Can and the Chelmer - as a young Scout at the age of 10. The Chelmsford Canoe Club member told BBC Essex how he took on the 30m course to win, saying it was all about timing that final push. "Coming into the last portage, weighing up my opponents and working out how much everyone had left, and then once I got round the last turn - the last 100m or so - it was just all in, everything you had and luckily it was enough," he said.
"It usually takes us about two hours or so to complete the race so it was pretty action packed," he said.
Russell won the European title in Ponte De Lima, Portugal, on 7 June, in a race time of 02:06:32 over eight laps. The method of his win has been described as a "tactical masterclass".Russell paid tribute to his former Scout leader, who introduced him to paddling after he joined Chelmsford swimming club as a boy."That's how I got into it, ever since the age of 10, I've been down at Chelmsford swimming club learning how to paddle fast, and it's paid off," he said.
Russell, now based in Nottingham, was looking forward to the World Games in China, which are held every four years.Canoe marathons are not an Olympic discipline, although sprinting set distances on regatta courses are."I do occasionally have a go at sprinting but my forte definitely is the longer two- hour 30km races, and that's where I'm best," said Russell. However, he has decided to try some sprinting later in the year."We'll see how that goes, maybe LA 2028, who knows, maybe I'll be able to break into the sprint team and qualify for the Olympics," he said.

New look Eastbourne International tennis tournament begins
The organisers of the Eastbourne International say the quality of its tennis on show will be just as high as previous years, despite a downgrading of its downgrade means the women's event at Devonshire Park will face greater limitations on who can enter, including the number of top-ranked top British players appearing in Sussex include Emma Radacanu, Jodie Burrage, and Brighton's Sonay Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova is top seed in the women's draw, while Dan Evans - who has been ranked as high as number 21 in the world - is appearing in the men's event. The downgrade was the result of the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) and the All England Club achieving their aim of staging a women's tournament at Queen's in London in the first week of the grass court season from year's women's champion will only receive 250 ranking points instead of director Rebecca James said she believed this would not impact the level of competition."Around the grounds you wouldn't see any lower standards," she said."There are only enhancements to the tournament facilities."We have the reigning women's singles Wimbledon champion, a number of former singles grand slam champions and a host of British stars." It will be Kartal's first appearance at Eastbourne as a player, but she told BBC Radio Sussex she had "fond memories" of coming as a child."From six upwards I was doing what these kids are doing, running around getting autographs," she said."So it's nice to be here and I'm excited to get going." How to follow Eastbourne & Wimbledon qualifying on the BBCEastbourne International - scores and schedule Ken Pollock, president of the Devonshire Park Tennis Club, agreed that Eastbourne would continue to be a highlight of the tennis calendar."It continues to be a fantastic event for the town" he said."The shop windows are full of items celebrating the competition, and the fun park is back in town so there's a real buzz."Numbers don't seem to be any different. If anything gives me a buzz, it's seeing those people enjoy themselves so much." Father and daughter George and Julie Bell were among the early bird spectators turning out to enjoy the action."We like all of it, but it's interesting to see the home-grown talent" said Ms Bell agreed, adding: "It's really fantastic. Group 1-winning Aidan O'Brien monster pulled from all summer races after Royal Ascot ‘balls up'
GROUP 1-winning monster Los Angeles has been pulled from all the big summer races - after a Royal Ascot 'balls up'. Aidan O'Brien's millionaire Tattersalls Gold Cup hero flopped completely when 13-8 fav for last week's Prince Of Wales's Stakes at Royal Ascot. 1 Sweating and ridden prominently by Ryan Moore, team Ballydoyle looked to, for once, get it wrong as Los Angeles went way too quick trying to keep up with pacemaker Continuous. Both looked on fumes up the straight and soon gave way to awesome winner Ombudsman. Los Angeles finished fifth in the end, beaten some seven lengths. O'Brien says the poor showing means he will be removed from some of the money-spinning races over the next few weeks. And he won't be seen again until near October time, with one prep run coming before a tilt at the Arc. O'Brien told the Nick Luck Daily podcast: "Los Angeles will have a break. "He had a tough, hard race and sometimes that happens when the pace is very, very strong. "He had a tough race and he won't run again until he has a prep race for the Arc. "He won't run in the King George - it was too tough on him and he'll need a bit of time." Respected racing presenter Lydia Hislop described Los Angeles' Ascot run as a rare 'balls up' under Moore. She said: "Clealry there has been a setback or recalling as a result of what happened - a stayer was burst going too fast. "It sounds as though rather than just having a torrid time in the race, that it has had some sort of lingering effect, as the plan was all the top races over the summer. "They have a ring around the Arc now - but he has got to get there and it is sad news. "Los Angeles is a big favourite of mine and what has happeneed is unfortunate. "But, as Aidan and Ryan have done, it's best to put your hands up and come clean if you balls something up - we all do it!" . Remember to gamble responsibly A responsible gambler is someone who:
