8th Pay Commission News: Around 1 crore central government employees and pensioners are eagerly waiting for the Terms of Reference (ToR) for the 8th Pay Commission, which will serve as the basis for the revisions of salaries and pensions among other things.
The 8th Pay Commission, which is expected to be set up soon, will revise the salaries, pensions and allowances of government employees and pensioners.
But when will the 8th Pay Commission be set up? Will there be delays? How will a delay affect fitment factor? Read on to know the answers.
As per a report by The Economic Times, the 8th Pay Commission may be delayed beyond the expected timeline of January 2026.
The 7th Pay Commission, which was announced in February 2014, came into effect almost two years later in January 2016. That timeline was given to accommodate the time required for submission of reports, approval from the cabinet and subsequent rollout. However, as of mid-2025, there is no report of the 8th Pay Commission being formed, and the ToRs have not been finalised either.
While there are reports of discussions about the commission being underway, the rollout of the 8th Pay Commission may miss the January 2026 timeline. According to the ET report, the implementation may only be done in late 2026 or early 2027.
Over the three decades of pay commissions, the government has experimented with its structure – Grade Pay, Pay Bands, and the Pay Matrix. Each of them have set a norm for how salaries have been revised through the decades.
Before 6th CPC, there were over 4,000 disparate pay scales across roles, which complicated salary calculations.
The 6th Pay Commission introduced Pay Bands and Grade Pay, simplifying the payment process for each role.
The 7th CPC brought the real gamechanger – the Pay Matrix. The commission created a 24-level Pay Matrix, with each cell representing unique salaries. Under the 7th CPC, the fitment factor was revised at 2.57.
While there have been no word on how the 8th Pay Commission will revise salary structures of lakhs of central government employees and pensioners, experts have said that the fitment factor will be kept between 2.5 to 2.8. However, since there is no clarity on even the formation of the commission, nothing can be confirmed as of now.

Hours after the United States struck three nuclear sites in Iran, President Donald Trump on Sunday hinted at the possibility of a regime change in Tehran. In the early hours of Sunday, the US joined Israel's war against Iran. Trump said that the country carried out a 'very successful attack' on the nuclear sites of Fordo, Natanz and Esfahan in Iran. 'A full payload of bombs was dropped on the primary site, [Fordo],' Trump said. The United States' decision to directly enter the conflict came over a week after the Israeli military struck what it claimed were nuclear targets, and also other sites, in Iran with the aim of stalling Tehran's nuclear programme. Iran retaliated with missile attacks on Israel. Washington is an ally of Israel and acts as a guarantor of the country's security. During a Pentagon briefing on the attacks on Sunday, Hegseth claimed that Iran's nuclear ambitions were ' obliterated ' after Trump ordered the strikes on the country's three nuclear sites, NPR reported. The attack did not affect Iranian troops or civilians, he claimed. Stating that the strikes were not aimed at bringing out a ' regime change ' in Tehran, he added: 'The president authorised a precision operation to neutralise the threats to our national interests posed by the Iranian nuclear programme and the collective self-defence of our troops and our ally Israel.' The defence secretary said that Trump was fully committed to the peace process. '[Trump] wanted a negotiated outcome…gave Iran every single opportunity and unfortunately was met by stonewalling.' During the briefing, Hegseth also read out Trump's social media posts which warned that any retaliation from Iran would be met with force ' far greater '. Hegseth added: 'Iran would be smart to heed those words, he said it before and he means it.' Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Sunday had called the US strikes a 'grave violation of the United Nations Charter, international law and the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons'. 'The events this morning are outrageous and will have everlasting consequences,' he had said on social media. 'Each and every member of the UN must be alarmed over this extremely dangerous, lawless and criminal behavior'. The ambassador stated that Israel decided to 'destroy diplomacy' when it struck Iran, two days ahead of nuclear talks that were set to take place between Iran and the US, Al Jazeera reported. The Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty had been 'manipulated into a political weapon … exploited as a pretext for aggression and unlawful action', Bahreini added.

Contract maker Zetwerk set to pump Rs 500–800 crore for component making
Zetwerk is looking to pump in Rs 500–800 crore as the Bengaluru-based unicorn embarks on manufacturing printed circuit boards (PCBs), enclosures and electromechanical components such as heat sinks and sensors, said its co-founder Rahul Sharma 'We are very excited about the component PLI (production-linked incentive) and have seen a lot of traction,' he told ET. While the application for the government's PLI scheme is being prepared, Zetwerk has forged technology tie-ups with companies in Taiwan and is eyeing setting up manufacturing plants over the next one year. 'We are in talks with a Taiwanese company for PCBs and have gotten into a definitive agreement with them," Sharma said. "We are also speaking to a South Korean company. And for products like enclosures, we are partnering with an Indian company since that capability already exists here. Within enclosures, we are looking at enclosures for laptops and non-Apple mobile brands and products." Once the necessary approvals are obtained, Zetwerk would set up the manufacturing units, Sharma said. 'We are already present in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka with plants in the electronics sector. Now, with the component PLI, we would be setting up new plants and are in close talks with a few of the state governments,' he said. While Sharma did not name the states that Zetwerk was engaging with, he said none of them had reached a definitive agreement yet. He also said that segments like electromechanical components, unlike PCBs, can be housed within the existing units. 'PCBs cannot be stationed at the same place where our existing EMS (electronic manufacturing services) factories are stationed,' he said. 'It will definitely be in a different place because it has different requirements for polishing control, power and other factors. Same goes for enclosures where we don't have to have these facilities situated in our existing clusters." Sharma further said, 'We have also hired one of the big four firms to help us prepare an application which is suitable for the government to evaluate.'
