Local nonprofit given grant for early education center
OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – Under-served familied will have more access to early childhood education after a grant was given to Sunbeam Family Services Wednesday morning. They plan to renovate a new early education center with the funds.
'This is a huge impact in finishing this fundraising goal for our new center,' CEO for the nonprofit Sarah Rahhal said.

They offer early education, mental health, foster care and parenting services across Oklahoma County. Wednesday morning, they got a $200,000 boost from the James M. Cox Foundation to help serve 32 children.
The grant also caps a $1 million fundraiser that they've been doing for a year and will go towards a building just next door. It used to be an emergency senior shelter, but it shut down during the pandemic. Now, the plans are laid out to help underserved families children to start learning early.
'90 percent of a child's brain is developed before their fifth birthday,' Rahhal said. 'So, early education helps all that good brain development.'
The organization emphasizes S.T.E.A.M learning. Parent Jessica Bruckerhoff said this will help others like the nonprofit helped her son Walter, who was born a month early.
'Walter is 4 now and he is on an upward trajectory and he will be ready for preschool this year,' Bruckerhoff said Wednesday.

They expect the center to open this fall. A play area is already situated in the back, with more to come.
'I hope everyone will be a champion for early education because it really is about the future of our community,' Rahhal said.

Pay It 4Ward: Librarian fills shelves with joy for Stillwater students
PAYNE COUNTY, Okla. (KFOR) – Earlier this year, Stillwater was devastated by wildfires. More than fifty homes in Payne County were destroyed, and among them was the home of a very special librarian. When the flames swept through the Crosswinds neighborhood in Stillwater, fire incinerated ten houses on one street, including the home of a loyal educator. 'During the wildfires in March, her house burned down, and she wasn't even home when it happened,' said Morganne Clyburn. 'It was really sad, and she had a hard time dealing with all of the things that they lost.' Clyburn's co-worker, Dana Cox, runs the library at Stillwater Public Schools' Sangre Ridge Elementary. Oklahoma woman provides community joy through faith and service 'It takes a strong and resilient person to go through such a devastating loss and continue to be a light and inspiration to her students and all of those around her,' said First Fidelity Banker Ryan Baxter 'On behalf of First Fidelity Bank, I'd like to present $400 to pay it forward.' Cox excels at all the customary librarian duties; she pours into the students in many different ways, including regular knitting lessons. 'Here at Sangre, we know every student by name in need,' said principal Cami Patzkowski. 'And I truly feel like Miss Dana does that. She gets to know the kids in the library. She knows what they like.' Dana Cox was nominated for the Pay It 4Ward award by fellow librarian Morganne Clyburn. 'She always has a smile on her face,' Clyburn said. 'She's one of those people that, we could ask her to do anything.' News 4 and First Fidelity Bank surprised Cox in the library. 'I love this staff, just the community, where they have been so kind to me and so generous to our family,' said Cox. 'I love these kids. It's hard to have a bad day when you're with these children because they make you smile and they love you no matter what.' Cox is also a two-time breast cancer survivor. 'When you have people who love you and you have Jesus, you can get through anything.' At Sangre Ridge Elementary School, they call the library a place of joy, and it is, because the librarian at the helm is a person of joy, spreading love and inspiring acceptance in all who come here to read and to learn. Applications For James Beard Foundation's Women's Entrepreneurial Leadership Program Are Now Open
The James Beard Foundation (JBF) is accepting applications for its annual Women's Entrepreneurial Leadership (WEL) program, according to a press release. The 11-week virtual program is designed to help U.S.-based female owners and co-owners with brick-and-mortar business in the food or beverage industries. By offering this educational, training and networking program, WEL provides business owners with the chance to excel and evolve as a leader and discover ways to optimize their business model, as well as identify improvements on internal systems and create best strategies for long-term growth. The Foundation's educational partner is Cornell University. Virtual sessions will be led by Cornell faculty in addition to JBF staff, industry leaders and other experts. WEL's goal is to address systemic issues that women business owners face in their professional journeys and provide tools, resources, and secure networks to guarantee success and more so to see an increase of women-owned businesses and leadership throughout the growing industry. To be eligible for the program, applicants must be at least 21 years old and a woman or nonbinary individual. Applicants must have a minimum of $1 million in annual revenue and be committed to the mandatory attendance policy for each session. The application deadline is June 6 at 11:59 PM PT. Those who make the cut will be notified August 1. The program starts September 8. As the foundation continues to encourage Black women and other women of color to participate, a number of Black chefs and restaurants have received the prestigious James Beard Award, which recognizes ' the exceptional talent and achievement in the culinary arts, hospitality, media, and broader food system as well as a demonstrated commitment to racial and gender equity, community, sustainability and a culture' for all to succeed in. In 2024, Rashida Holmes of Bridgetown Roti in Los Angeles was named one of the Outstanding Chef semifinalists. The Caribbean-American pop-up restaurant is known for its vegan and protein pattie offerings.
