England's early XI announcement for the June 20 Headingley Test against India stirred buzz, particularly over Josh Tongue's inclusion in a pace-heavy attack alongside Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse. With Shoaib Bashir as the lone spinner and Jamie Smith behind the stumps, the lineup looked solid.
However, it was Tongue's selection that drew the most scrutiny, especially online. But former England star Stuart Broad described him as an "X-factor" and emphasized the importance of fitness and consistency. Now that the Test has begun, fans are sharing mixed reactions, questioning whether Tongue's inclusion was the right call. Who is Josh Tongue
Josh Tongue, 27, made his Test debut for England on Nay 31, 2023 against Ireland. In 2024, he endured a frustrating spell on the sidelines, missing the entire season with Nottinghamshire due to injury after his 2023 move from Worcestershire. Though he returned to competitive action with the England Lions in Australia, his outings were underwhelming - going wicketless in both matches in Brisbane and Sydney.

It wasn't until over two months later that he finally made his Nottinghamshire debut. His long-awaited breakthrough came on the opening day of the 2025 season, when he claimed his first wicket in 590 days - dismissing wicketkeeper-batter Ollie Robinson. Mixed fan reactions to Josh Tongue's selection
Despite Broad's backing, Tongue's inclusion has divided opinion online. While a few praised his pace, others questioned his readiness for Test cricket.
One fan posted, "So far Josh Tongue not found his length, where he wanted to bowl."

Criticism also extended to the overall bowling lineup: " Is this the worst bowling attack England has ever fielded in a test? Woakes only back from injury and 36, Stokes only back from injury and can't bowl much, Tongue not good enough, Carse has potential but can be expensive. Basir doesn't get in his county team ."

Yashasvi Jaiswal Is Worst Fielder In Team India, Fans Cannot Keep Clam As India Opener Dropps 3 Catches
The Headingley Test between India and England saw a sublime mix of brilliance and blunders from the visitors. While Yashasvi Jaiswal celebrated his first Test century on English soil, his nightmare in the slip cordon sparked an online frenzy, leaving Indian fans furious and Jasprit Bumrah visibly frustrated. Yashasvi Jaiswal's elegant ton on Day 1 had fans and pundits hailing the young opener as a future great. But by Day 3, the narrative had turned sharply. In a horror fielding display, Jaiswal dropped three crucial catches—each one off Jasprit Bumrah's bowling—handing lifelines to England batters Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, and Harry Brook. The trio collectively added over 100 runs after their reprieves, swinging the momentum back in England's favour. This unwanted feat of three dropped catches in a single innings made Jaiswal the first Indian player to do so in five years, according to CricViz stats. Fans on X didn't hold back. "Sharam kar le Yashasvi!" trended across platforms, with users comparing his fielding to Monty Panesar's infamous bloopers. Fielding Failures Haunt India: A 5-Year Low India's overall fielding effort at Headingley was substandard. The team shelled six catching chances, their worst single-innings performance since 2019. What made matters worse was the fact that four of those came off Bumrah, who otherwise bowled a phenomenal spell—claiming 5/83 in 24.4 overs. Even usually safe hands like Ravindra Jadeja and Rishabh Pant joined the list of culprits. These lapses allowed England to post 465 and nearly erase India's first-innings advantage, finishing just six runs behind. Jasprit Bumrah: A Lone Warrior with a Big Heart If anyone emerged as India's saving grace, it was Jasprit Bumrah. On an unhelpful surface, Bumrah was relentless—removing Zak Crawley, Joe Root, Chris Woakes, and Josh Tongue with pace and precision. His spell not only rescued India from a potential collapse but also etched his name alongside Kapil Dev for most five-wicket hauls in overseas Tests by an Indian pacer (12). Despite the dropped catches, Bumrah remained remarkably composed. 'Nobody is dropping catches intentionally. They're all trying hard and are still learning. I don't want to put more pressure on them,' he said in the post-day press conference, displaying maturity and leadership. Fans Unforgiving, But Bumrah Extends Support While Jaiswal was roasted online, the Indian vice-captain chose empathy over emotion. Bumrah cited cold conditions and inexperience as possible reasons, urging critics to not judge harshly. His reaction won praise from legends like Sachin Tendulkar, who lauded the pacer for his resilience despite being 'denied a nine-wicket haul.' Even so, the missed opportunities have raised serious fielding concerns. Michael Vaughan, in commentary, remarked, 'India could've led by 150 if they'd held their catches.'

Shubman Gill Plans England Star's Dismissal To Perfection, Leaves Experts Impressed
The first signs of Shubman Gill 's captaincy plans coming to fruition in Test cricket was seen on Day 3 of the first Test between India and England. Gill had opted for a set strategy against England wicket-keeper Jamie Smith, with Prasidh Krishna bowling. Gill had set a field heavy on the leg-side with a clear plan of Krishna bowling short to Smith. However, even after Smith had pulled Krishna for a six, Gill did not change his field or the strategy. As it turned out, it paid dividends as Krishna got Smith's wicket in that over. Gill had placed arguably his best fielder, Ravindra Jadeja, at deep mid-wicket. However, he had also packed the leg-side, placing debutant B Sai Sudharsan at deep square-leg. The plan was for Prasidh to bowl short to Smith, inviting him to send it to the fielders on the leg-side. Even though Smith connected well and hit one six in that region, Gill persisted with the plan. Soon after, Smith went for the same shot. This time, however, he didn't connect it well enough. Ravindra Jadeja initially caught the ball, running square, but lost his balance near the boundary ropes. Here, Gill's strategy was proven right even further. Sai Sudharsan emerged just in time for Jadeja to throw the ball back to him, to complete a superb team catch. It was a moment of brilliance, not only in the outfield, but also in terms of bowling to a plan. India's plan received high praise from former England captains Nasser Hussain and Michael Atherton from the commentary box. "The plan has worked for India," said Michael Atherton on-air. "Don't you love it when a plan comes together," quipped Nasser. Prasidh Krishna removed Jamie Smith (40 off 52) and Brook (99 off 112) with the short ball but leaked too many runs at the same time with his bowling tactic, conceding 128 runs in 20 overs. He picked up three wickets on Day 3, also taking the wicket of Ollie Pope early on. Harry Brook ran out of luck on 99 before Jasprit Bumrah completed a well deserved five wicket haul to ensure a slender six run first innings lead for India, who bowled out England for 465 in an extended afternoon session on day three of the first Test here on Sunday. Before Bumrah castled Josh Tongue to end England innings, Chris Woakes (38 off 55) punished a predictable Indian pace attack to take his team close to India's 471. England's tail virtually cancelled out the Indian first innings with the match now hinged on third and fourth innings respectively.
