Rishabh Pant celebrating his century vs England (Image via X/@BCCI) A packed stadium at Headingley was witness to Shubman Gill's first century as Test captain on Friday. The 25-year-old bagged a thrilling ton as his impressive innings steered India to 359/3 at stumps on Day 3. Sanjay Manjrekar Takes Brutal 'Off-Stump' Jibe At 'Former Batter'; Internet Says It's Virat Kohli
India got off to an excellent start on Day 1 of the first Test against England at Headingley. Openers KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal performed excellently against the new ball, stitching a 91-run partnership and completely nullifying the English pace attack early on. Rahul and Jaiswal did an excellent job of leaving deliveries outside the off-stump and taking and mixing caution with aggression. On that note, former India cricketer and reputed pundit Sanjay Manjrekar took a jibe at another 'former player', which many on social media thought was a reference to Virat Kohli. "Deliveries outside the off stump, full, have been left alone. Jaiswal has done that. Anything that has been pitched right up into the stumps, he has driven. Anything that has been wide, he has looked to score on. KL Rahul has not touched one delivery or attempted to play one single delivery that's been full, just outside off," Manjrekar noted, from the commentary box. "We know of a former batter who would have gone after that delivery and got himself into trouble. But not these two," Manjrekar stated. Many fans on social media interpreted Manjrekar referring to Kohli's weakness outside the off-stump with that statement. Sanjay Manjrekar Again Cooked Virat Kohli #INDvsENG. — Hrsha (@Hrsha_45) June 20, 2025 Sanjay Manjrekar - "We know of a former batter who would have gone after that delivery and gotten himself into trouble" No way he just said this on air about Kohli The man has retired. Please leave him alone now #INDvsENG #ViratKohli #sanjaymanjrekar — BoyLovesCricket (@boylovescricket) June 20, 2025 Sanjay Manjrekar : "We know a former batter Kohli who would have gone after it and got himself into trouble but not these two" — (@Shivayaaah) June 20, 2025 Kohli infamously got out repeatedly to deliveries outside the off-stump on multiple times. The weakness became glaring during India's tour of Australia in 2024/25, which saw Kohli dismissed by edging deliveries outside the off-stump for every single time he got out in the series. The series turned out to be Kohli's last, with the 36-year-old announcing his retirement from Test cricket ahead of the tour of England. After England captain Ben Stokes opted to bowl first under overcast skies, Yashsavi Jaiswal and KL Rahul faced a disciplined new-ball attack led by Chris Woakes and Brydon Carse. The Indian openers started cautiously, showing sound judgment outside off and immense patience. As the session wore on, both batters found fluency-Rahul unfurling elegant drives through cover, and Jaiswal playing with a mix of controlled aggression and solid technique. Their partnership of 91 runs was a masterclass in shot selection and temperament, with the pair collecting 16 boundaries, all via classical strokes through the offside. Despite a few testing deliveries-most notably a nasty ribcage blow to Jaiswal from Carse-the duo looked in complete control. For a while, England appeared bereft of ideas, even burning a DRS review on a delivery that pitched comfortably outside leg stump.

WATCH: Ben Stokes reacts as Rishabh Pant smashes his second ball down tracks for boundary in 1st IND vs ENG Test
India vice captain Rishabh Pant is as unpredictable a batter as they come and England captain Ben Stokes found out about it first hand during the opening day of the first Test between India and England at Leeds on Friday. Replacing centurion Yashasvi Jaiswal in the middle, Pant stepped out of the crease in just the second ball he faced and smashed the ball back over the Stokes' head. That brought out a big laugh from the England captain and he had a chat with Pant on the follow through. Earlier, Jaiswal made a characterful hundred and skipper Shubman Gill crafted a graceful fifty as India punished a lacklustre England to reach a formidable 215 for two at tea. That's some shot by one and only Rishabh Pant. #ENGvIND #INDvsENG — Wickets Hitting (@offpacedelivery) June 20, 2025 They were as different as chalk and cheese, but both Gill and Jaiswal found immense success with their respective methods during an unbroken 123-run alliance for the third wicket. Jaiswal brought up his 5th hundred in Test cricket off 144 balls and Gill his eighth half-century off 56 deliveries in his first outing as India Test captain, underlining the different route they travelled on the day. England might see this innings as an ominous early sign from Jaiswal that he might just replicate that 712-run series against them in India last year. It was not a typical Jaiswal innings where he simply flayed the bowlers around, but he showed admirable self-restraint, particularly outside the off-stump. The left-hander was dismissed in that channel a couple of times while playing for India A against the England Lions in the recent tour matches, but here the 23-year-old did not repeat his mistakes. He was also copiously assisted by the England bowlers, who struggled to discover the right line and length on a flaccid track. Their profligacy meant that the Indian batters received ample scoring opportunities. Even amidst his restrained avatar, Jaiswal brought some cracking shots off the shelf such as a crisp off-drive off pacer Josh Tongue or a carved six off the same bowler. Gill, on the other hand, did not waver much from his normal batting doctrine, playing shots with minimum follow-through through on-side and with a flourish on the off-side. (With agency inputs)

IND vs ENG 1st Test: Yashasvi Jaiswal slams 100 in Leeds, announces arrival in England in style
Yashasvi Jaiswal is rapidly cementing his status as a Test match star. After smashing a stunning century on debut in Perth against Australia, the young left-hander has repeated the feat - this time on English soil at Headingley. Despite battling repeated cramps in his right forearm, Jaiswal displayed remarkable resilience to bring up his fifth Test hundred. The milestone came off a delivery from Brydon Carse — a good-length ball on off-stump. Jaiswal stayed back and gently guided it toward point before setting off for a single. As soon as he completed the run, he tore off his helmet, raised his arm high, let out a roaring cheer, and punched the air in jubilation. 📸 📸A celebratory run 👌The hands aloft 🙌The trademark jump ☺️Updates ▶️ | #ENGvIND | @ybj_19 Hundreds for India in maiden Test innings in England 146 – M. BCCI Blasted For Favouritism As Domestic Star Misses Out On Debut In 1st Test
The first installment of Sai Sudharsan 's Test debut lasted just four balls as he was dismissed by England captain Ben Stokes on the stroke of Lunch in the first Test in Leeds on Friday. Sudharsan nicked a delivery which was going down the leg, and England wicketkeeper Jamie Smith did the rest, leaping wonderfully to his right and grabbed the ball with both hands. It was not the ideal start for Sudharsan and his wicket also allowed England to peg India back after a great start to the opening day of a long tour. While it is too early to judge Sudharsan after just one failure, fans were not happy with his inclusion in the team in the very first place. Sudharsan's debut came at the expense of Bengal captain Abhimanyu Easwaran, who was once again overlooked despite piling runs in Domestic cricket. Easwaran received his maiden call up in 2022 but is yet to make his India debut. Fans, however, slammed the BCCI for giving prefence to IPL talents. I feel bad for Abhimanyu Easwaran,he was not given a chance again today, before him Sai Sudarshan was given a chance, whereas Easwaran is consistently performing better than Sudarshan in domestic cricket. #INDvENG #INDvsENG #ENGvIND #ENGvsIND #TeamIndia — kuldeep singh (@kuldeep0745) June 20, 2025 Abhimanyu Easwaran deserved a chance in 1st match. Bcci is treating him like untouchable. Ipl can't be criteria for selection in tests. — Mankirat Singh (@rock0010000) June 20, 2025 What about A Easwaran? He performs well at the domestic level every year and is consistently being selected in the team, but he is not being given a chance to play. Sai Sudharsan is a good player, but Easwaran should have been given a chance before him. #ENGvIND #INDvsENG — kuldeep singh (@kuldeep0745) June 20, 2025 It's just a social media pressure that's why BCCI picked Abhimanyu Easwaran in the team. He is never going to get a game for india in near was benched in Australia and will countine to do so in other SENA thinks he can only survive in Indian pitches. — Sujeet Suman (@sujeetsuman1991) June 20, 2025 Sai Sudarshan out for 4 balls duck: 1st ball - Huge appeal, 2nd ball - Dot, 3rd ball - Huge appeal, 4th ball - Out 3 out of 4 balls were nightmare and that is what happens when you ignores merit of Easwaran. Still all love to Sudarshan, he will come back. — MachisKiTeeli (@machiskiteeli) June 20, 2025 India went to lunch at 92 for two on the first day of the opening Test of the five-match series. Rahul (42) and Jaiswal (42 not out) made the England attack look pedestrian until the former and debutant B Sai Sudharsan (0) got out in the final moments of the first session. Stokes' decision to bowl first might have stemmed from the transformed nature of Headingley track which has become a batter's ally in the last decade, and that character was visible in the first session of the match itself. There was a hint of movement and swing for the pacers, but the Indian openers were well up to the task on a largely sunny morning. An England attack that did not have either James Anderson or Stuart Broad in its roster did not seem to have the ammunition to trouble the Indian batters on a rather flaccid pitch. The unit consisting of Stokes himself, Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue and Chris Woakes either bowled too full for Rahul and Jaiswal to bring out their drives, or were on pads for the batters to milk them for some easy singles.
