AI system for faster detection of coronary artery disease to be trialled at 3 S'pore hospitals
SINGAPORE – A new artificial intelligence (AI) system which will reduce the time required for a cardiac scan analysis and allow for faster diagnosis of coronary artery disease will be available at three public hospitals here as part of a year-long trial.
The Singapore heart lesion analyser (Sense) will be trialled at the National Heart Centre Singapore (NHCS), the National University Hospital and Tan Tock Seng Hospital in the third quarter of 2025.
A total of 300 patients across the three institutions will be involved in the trial.
Sense will use sophisticated computational capabilities and algorithms to interpret cardiac imaging scans and evaluate the risk of coronary artery disease in under 10 minutes.
This is a process which typically requires two to four hours of analysis by radiographers and cardiologists, said Assistant Professor Lohendran Baskaran, senior consultant with the NHCS cardiology department.
'Sometimes it can take longer because doctors are busy doing other things in between all these scans, such as seeing patients in clinic,' said Prof Lohendran.
Sense automates this process, analysing CT scans to establish the amount of calcium deposits in the coronary arteries and epicardial adipose tissue – the layer of fat surrounding the heart and major coronary arteries.
It has shown between 85 and 99 per cent accuracy so far, Prof Lohendran said, though he noted these results have been from the use of Sense in a controlled environment.
The year-long trial of Sense at the three institutions will give a better idea of how accurate the system is in real-world settings, he said.
'Ultimately, all of this has to be reviewed, checked and confirmed by the doctor before taking it any further. This will never override a doctor's position or clinical judgment,' said Prof Lohendran.
Sense is being led by the CardioVascular Systems Imaging and Artificial Intelligence (CVS.AI) research laboratory at NHCS, together with A*Star's Institute for Infocomm Research.
CVS.AI, whose work began in 2021, uses AI to detect and predict heart disease more quickly and accurately.
Occupying a 164 sq m space at the NHCS building on Hospital Boulevard, the lab employs AI-powered machine learning software and high-performance graphics processing units (GPUs) for real-time processing of large datasets, to significantly improve the accuracy of disease prediction models.
This infrastructure will allow CVS.AI to enhance and strengthen it AI algorithms, using the big data collected and analysed, said CVS.AI co-director and core technical lead Associate Professor Zhong Liang.
Sense builds on an earlier project by CVS.AI: the AI-driven national platform for CT coronary angiography for clinical and industrial applications (Apollo).
Apollo aimed to improve the accuracy and speed of interpreting CT scans using AI.
Over four years, it built a database of almost three million images from the CT scans of some 5,000 cardiac patients here, together with comprehensive clinical data.
Sense is supported by SingHealth and A*Star's Healthcare Translation Partnership, while Apollo was awarded A*Star's Industry Alignment Fund – Pre-Positioning Programme.
The lab's work will help improve understanding of coronary artery disease in Singapore, said Prof Lohendran, who is also director and core clinical lead of CVS.AI.
Factors such as the severity of disease and what part of the population is likely to have it are still poorly understood, he added.
Coronary artery disease is responsible for almost a third of the cardiovascular-related deaths in Singapore.
In 2023, 8,311 people here died from cardiovascular disease in the Republic, accounting for about 30 per cent of all deaths that year.

Chipmaker Wolfspeed nears bankruptcy deal with lenders including Apollo
[WASHINGTON] Struggling chipmaker Wolfspeed will be taken over by creditors including Apollo Global Management under a proposal that would put it into bankruptcy just long enough to slash billions of US dollars in debt, according to sources familiar with the plan. The company will soon announce a deal with lenders for a so-called prepackaged bankruptcy, said the sources, who asked not to be named because the information is private. In the weeks after that restructuring support agreement is signed, Wolfspeed would ask creditors to vote on the deal and then file a Chapter 11 case, according to one of the sources. US bankruptcy rules allow firms to round up votes before filing an insolvency case. If enough creditors vote in favour, the company can speed through a Chapter 11 bankruptcy much more quickly and more cheaply. Once it files for bankruptcy, the company cannot exit court supervision until a judge approves its debt-cutting plan. In an unusual move, shareholders could recover as much as 5 per cent in the proposed scenario, one of the sources said. Typically, shareholders are wiped out in bankruptcy. Suppliers and other vendors holding unsecured debt will be fully repaid under the proposal. Should not enough creditors join the proposed restructuring deal, Wolfspeed would likely file a more traditional bankruptcy case. If that happens, shareholders may not recover anything, one of the sources said. Representatives for Wolfspeed and Apollo declined to comment. Wolfspeed had been struggling with production snarls at a key factory that makes silicon carbide wafers, and its share price has plummeted over the past few years. To expand production, the firm won a US$750 million award last year from the federal government under the Chips and Science Act. US President Donald Trump's administration, upon taking office in January, has been reworking many of the awards. Wolfspeed has only collected part of the money and has been negotiating with the Trump administration about the award, the company said in a regulatory filing. One of the firm's biggest creditors is also a major customer. Japanese chipmaker Renesas Electronics paid Wolfspeed a US$2 billion deposit as part of a 10-year supply deal. Renesas has been negotiating with the company and Apollo over debt restructuring, Wolfspeed told investors in January. By March, Wolfspeed was having trouble reaching a deal to refinancing US$575 million in bonds due next year, Bloomberg News reported. On May 9, the company warned it hired advisers to help cut debt, possibly in bankruptcy. The vast majority of Wolfspeed's debt holders have been directly involved in negotiating the restructuring support agreement, the sources said. Apollo has been a major backer of Wolfspeed since at least 2023, when it led a group of lenders that provided the company with as much as US$2 billion. Volunteers knit bra inserts for breast cancer survivors to dress well, regain confidence

ST PHOTO: TARYN NG SINGAPORE - In her quest to find the right filling for her bra after undergoing mastectomy, breast cancer survivor Lyn Ee, 74, discovered Knitted Knockers, soft breast prostheses made from cotton yarn. 'They not only provide a gentler, softer alternative to the traditional breast prosthetics that can be hot and heavy, they also give back to breast cancer survivors their looks, confidence and peace of mind,' Ms Ee said. Today, 10 years after her discovery , the soft mounds of cotton yarn are being distributed free at all restructured hospitals in Singapore to women who have had mastectomy. Wanting to share her discovery of the prostheses with others here, Ms Ee in 2015 founded Knitted Knockers Singapore, t he local chapter of the American non-profit that has expanded internationally, gathering a group of volunteers to knit the bra inserts to give to breast cancer patients. Knitted Knockers@NHG (National Healthcare Group), where volunteers can knit and distribute the bra inserts, was launched on June 6 by Minister for Digital Development and Information Josephine Teo. Speaking at an event marking the 15th anniversary of the Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) Breast Clinic, Mrs Teo cited the initiative as an example of the good work the clinic has done. 'You want to provide the best clinical care and are equally keen to support the emotional well-being of your patients . The fact that you have put as priority helping patients regain a sense of normalcy and confidence – particularly for women who have had to go through mastectomies – is admirable ,' she said at the event. The 61-year-old Filipina , fondly called Carmen by the Teos, has been working for the family for 27 years. Mrs Teo said: 'I remember vividly the day she was diagnosed. After she had reported a lump, Carmen had been sent by our family doctor to be properly tested. Parliament was in session when I received Carmen's phone call. I guessed it was bad news, because she would otherwise have waited till I got home . 'Over the next few weeks, I saw her struggle with fear and despair. Against the advice of some, we decided she should be treated in Singapore instead of being sent home. Now, 17 years later, we are glad we made that choice. Carmen is fully recovered. PHOTO: COURTESY OF JOSEPHINE TEO Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer among women in Singapore, making up nearly 30 per cent of all cancers diagnosed among women here. The incidence here has more than tripled over the past 50 years, to 74 cases per 100,000 women now – one of the highest in Asia. The Breast Clinic has performed more than 6,100 breast cancer surgical operations since 2010 and over 450 in 2024 alone, the largest number within the NHG cluster last year . One of the clinic's latest innovations is endoscopic breast surgery that combines keyhole mastectomy with immediate breast reconstruction. The minimally invasive procedure is performed in the same setting by both a specially trained breast surgeon and a plastic surgeon. Cancerous tissue is removed from the affected breast, which is immediately reconstructed by the plastic surgeon using the patient's own skin, fat, and blood vessels. Since its introduction at the clinic in November 2024, three of its patients have undergone this advanced dual procedure. The first patient to undergo the procedure was polytechnic lecturer Kwa Sai Geok, 62, who was diagnosed with Stage 1 breast cancer during a routine mammogram in 2024. 'I did not feel any pain during the four-day stay in hospital... and life was back to normal about four months after my right hand fully recovered with the help of the TTSH physiotherapist,' she said. Dr Ang Wei-Wen, a consultant from Breast Surgery Service at TTSH, said that not everyone is suitable for the minimal-scar endoscopic mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. 'This is due to various factors, such as the stage and type of cancer, the patient's overall health, and the location and size of the tumour,' he said. Dr Ang said the next step would be to use robotics for the procedure. 'It is the future of breast surgery and already a trend in South Korea. Musk aiming to send uncrewed Starship to Mars by end of 2026
LOS ANGELES - Two days after the latest in a string of test-flight setbacks for his big new Mars spacecraft, Starship, Mr Elon Musk said on May 29 he foresees the futuristic vehicle making its first uncrewed voyage to the red planet at the end of 2026. Mr Musk presented a detailed Starship development timeline in a video posted online by his Los Angeles area-based rocket company, SpaceX, a day after departing the administration of US President Donald Trump as head of a tumultuous campaign to slash government bureaucracy. The billionaire entrepreneur had said earlier that he was planning to scale back his role in government to focus greater attention on his various businesses, including SpaceX and electric car and battery maker Tesla Inc. Mr Musk acknowledged that his latest timeline for reaching Mars hinged on whether Starship can accomplish a number of challenging technical feats during its flight-test development, particularly a post-launch refuelling manoeuvre in Earth orbit. The end of 2026 would coincide with a slim window that occurs once every two years when Mars and Earth align around the sun for the closest trip between the two planets, which would take seven to nine months to transit by spacecraft. Mr Musk gave his company a 50-50 chance of meeting that deadline. If Starship were not ready by that time, SpaceX would wait another two years before trying again, Mr Musk suggested in the video. The first flight to Mars would carry a simulated crew consisting of one or more robots of the Tesla-built humanoid Optimus design, with the first human crews following in the second or third landings. Mr Musk said he envisioned eventually launching 1,000 to 2,000 ships to Mars every two years to quickly establish a self-sustaining permanent human settlement. Nasa is currently aiming to return humans to the surface of the moon aboard Starship as early as 2027 - more than 50 years after its last manned lunar landings of the Apollo era - as a stepping stone toward ultimately launching astronauts to Mars sometime in the 2030s. Mr Musk, who has advocated for a more Mars-focused human spaceflight programme, has previously said he was aiming to send an unmanned SpaceX vehicle to the red planet as early as 2018 and was targeting 2024 to launch a first crewed mission there. The SpaceX founder was scheduled to deliver a live webcast presentation billed as 'The Road to Making Life Multiplanetary' from the company's Starbase, Texas, launch site on the night of May 27, following a ninth test flight of Starship that evening. But the speech was cancelled without notice after Starship spun out of control and disintegrated in a fireball about 30 minutes after launch and roughly halfway through its flight path without achieving some of its most important test goals. Two preceding test flights in January and March failed in more spectacular fashion, with the spacecraft blowing to pieces on ascent moments after liftoff, raining debris over parts of the Caribbean and forcing scores of commercial jetliners to change course as a precaution. Mr Musk shrugged off the latest mishap on May 27 with a brief post on X, saying it produced a lot of 'good data to review' and promising a faster launch 'cadence' for the next several test flights.
