Mets send slumping catcher Francisco Alvarez to minors

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Scuffling catcher Francisco Alvarez was demoted to the minors by the New York Mets on Sunday.
The team optioned Alvarez to Triple-A Syracuse and recalled Hayden Senger from its top farm club before Sunday night's series finale against the Philadelphia Phillies.
Senger will back up Luis Torrens, who replaces Alvarez as New York's primary catcher.
The move comes after Alvarez went 2 for 5 with a 452-foot home run late in Saturday night's 11-4 victory over Philadelphia, which snapped a seven-game losing streak for the Mets. But he is batting only .236 with three homers, three doubles, 11 RBIs and a .652 OPS in 35 games this year.
Alvarez was activated April 25 after beginning the season on the injured list with a hamate fracture in his left hand, and he missed two games this month while on the paternity list.
The 23-year-old Alvarez, once rated baseball's best minor league prospect, had 25 homers and 63 RBIs with a .721 OPS as a rookie in 2023.
Senger, 28, made his major league debut for the Mets this season and was batting .179 (5 for 28) in 13 big league games.
New York began the day tied with Philadelphia atop the NL East.

Meet the fan who placed third against pros in Fanatics Games

(Credit: Getty Images) NEW YORK — For anyone who looked at the Fanatics Games' final leaderboard Sunday afternoon, there was only one question to ask: Who the hell is Matt Dennish? Fanatics Games final championship leaderboard: Tom Brady, 399.1 Justin Gaethje, 345.4 Matt Dennish, 325 Advertisement Dennish is now the answer to an age-old question: Can an average Joe beat the Pros? Matt Dennish more than held his own against the pros at the Fanatics Games. (Credit: OBB Media) Dennish is a 39-year-old high school teacher at his alma mater, Red Lion High School in York, Pennsylvania. He was one of 50 average fans who got the chance to compete against the pros for the top prize of $1 million, and he finished in third place to win a 2003-04 LeBron James rookie chrome refractor card, last valued at $250,000. Dennish later traded the card to Brady for $250,000 cash, plus a signed Brady card and jersey. Brady said he would give $5,000 to every fan who competed and donate the rest of his earnings to charity. Advertisement Seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady added to his trophy case by taking home the initial Fanatics Games title and the $1 million prize. UFC fighter Justin Gaethje placed second and won a 2025 Ferrari 296 GTB. Six of the top 10 finishers were average fans. Dennish was clearly one of the best athletes in the competition. He stands 6-foot-6, was a standout cross-country and track runner and a basketball player in high school. He ran a 4:08 mile his freshman year at East Carolina, and he said his recent accomplishments included hitting a half-court shot at a Philadelphia 76ers game and working himself down to a two handicap on the golf course. Advertisement Dennish beat out such pros as Kevin Durant, Eli Manning, Dwight Howard, Rob Gronkowski, Denny Hamlin, Russell Wilson, C.J. Stroud, Bryce Young and Julian Edelman. Contestants were scored in eight contests, and the lowest two numbers were dropped. Dennish came into Friday's competition most nervous about the WWE Superstar entrance since he isn't a fan of wrestling. "A friend who is a fan convinced me to do Joe Hendry," Dennish told cllct. "I got a belt that our high school women's wrestling team bought and took off my shirt." Dennish got 70 total points in the WWE event, good for 10th-best score of the day. The MLB pitching accuracy was next. Contestants were given six pitches to score as many points as they can by hitting targets. The top and bottom corners were worth five points. The middle strike zone was one, and all the rest were three. Dennish shined, hitting four five-pointers, a three and a one. No one did better. Next he hit the NHL washer-dryer puck shooting contest, an area he knew would be difficult. He's not a hockey guy. Given 12 shots, he failed to knock in one, only lifting the puck successfully once. Advertisement In the NFL QB skills, Dennish was impressive. He went 3-for-5 in the 10-yard toss and the 20-yard toss and missed the golden ball, a 30-yard toss, by a foot or two. The top three best contestants in this skill were not surprisingly: 1. Stroud, 2. Brady and 3 (tie). Russell Wilson and Eli Manning. Dennish came in a respectable 11th. Dennish also finished 11th overall in the UFC striking challenge, hitting the punching bag for a total of 75.5 points. The FIFA goal-scoring was a strategy game for Dennish. He hit six out of eight in the bottom corners for five points each, but then got greedy by trying the top corners for 10 points and missed them all. He came in sixth. Streamer Adin Ross finished with Friday's best score. Advertisement In the last event, the Dick's closest-to-the-pin golf contest, Dennish knew he would be among the best. And he was right. "It's basically all I do these days," he said. The challenge? The contestants had five chances to get the ball on the green at a 105-yard par-3 hole, simulated from Oakmont Country Club, the site of last week's U.S. Open. One point for the green, two points for within 15 yards. Dennish came away with a respectable four points, placing three on the green and one within 15 feet. Brady finished first, and Dennish was fourth, one spot ahead of Manning. After competing, Dennish sat around eating some pizza and reloading the scores. Before he headed home on his train back to Pennsylvania, he saw he was in third place behind Brady and just ahead of Manning. Advertisement Although he dropped to third Sunday after Gaethje passed him, Dennish managed to hold onto the third spot and finish on the podium. Mets thought demotion was best way to get Francisco Alvarez ‘reps' to fix struggles

PHILADELPHIA — Francisco Alvarez needed the opportunity to work on his game and play every day, leading to the decision finalized by Mets brass Sunday. The struggling 23-year-old catcher was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse, with the hope he can find his form offensively and defensively before returning to potentially help the Mets in the near future. Access the Mets beat like never before Join Post Sports+ for exciting subscriber-only features, including real-time texting with Mike Puma about the inside buzz on the Mets. Try it free 'He's got a chance to be a pretty special player and we're going to need him,' manager Carlos Mendoza said before the Mets played their series finale against the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. 'We feel like it's best for him to go down there and get reps.' Mendoza cited Luis Torrens' success behind the plate as a significant factor. Torrens had gradually increased playing time to the point he was starting almost half of the time, and the Mets felt Alvarez needed to play every day if he was going to improve. The team recalled Hayden Senger from Syracuse to serve as the backup catcher. Mets president of baseball operations David Stearns deferred on answering questions about Alvarez until his scheduled Tuesday media session at Citi Field. Alvarez produced a .236/.319/.333 slash line with three homers and 11 RBIs in 35 games after beginning the season on the injured list following surgery in spring training for a broken hamate bone in his left hand. Alvarez was working on a new swing in spring training and Mendoza suspects the lost opportunity to face major league pitchers cost him. Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez (4) walks to the dugout against the Arizona Diamondbacks in the fourth inning at Chase Field. Rick Scuteri-Imagn Images 'Unfortunately, he went down,' Mendoza said. 'We're not trying to make excuses for the kid, but that is something we talk about.' Mendoza said Alvarez didn't resist when presented with the decision. 'He listened a lot,' Mendoza said. 'And then there was a follow-up where it's like, 'I want to make sure I am playing.' ' Alvarez's best season with the Mets occurred in 2023 when he hit 25 homers as a rookie. But the last two seasons have been disappointments for him — he missed significant time last year following surgery to repair a torn left thumb ligament. Behind the plate there have been lapses, most recently in Atlanta last week when Alvarez threw to the wrong base in the 10th inning, costing the Mets an opportunity to nail the baserunner who ultimately became the winning run. 'I feel like he's got better with his exchanges and throwing guys out,' Mendoza said. 'But the receiving and blocking are probably areas where we want to see improvement. Obviously, he's got to play.' The Mets know what they have in Senger, who opened the season on the major league roster with Alvarez rehabbing from surgery. But Mendoza said the organization's comfort with Senger — who has received high grades defensively — didn't factor into the decision to demote Alvarez. 'When we're making this decision, it's all about the player,' Mendoza said, referring to Alvarez. 'It was more about what is best for Alvy, what is best for the team and organization when we are looking at the present and the future. But it's nice to have a guy like Senger who has already shown he can handle that role.' Francisco Alvarez reacts after flying out for the last out in the thirteenth inning against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Citi Field, Friday, May 23, 2025, Corey Sipkin for the NY POST Likewise, the fact Alvarez went 2-for-5 on Saturday, with a ninth-inning homer, didn't carry any weight in team brass' decision. 'There were stretches where we were like, 'OK, that is what he is supposed to look like,' but then he will go a couple of games where he is late with a fastball and then he chases,' Mendoza said. 'We're just looking for consistency here and if you are playing three or four games a week compared to having the opportunity to play six, that is how you are going to get better.'

Kevin Durant Responds To Suns Fans After Blockbuster Trade: "They Got What They Wanted"

Kevin Durant Responds To Suns Fans After Blockbuster Trade: "They Got What They Wanted" originally appeared on Fadeaway World. Just hours after his blockbuster trade to the Houston Rockets became official, Kevin Durant finally broke his silence, and he did it live on stage at Fanatics Fest in New York City. The 36-year-old superstar, who had spent just over two years in Phoenix, was taking part in an interview with Kay Adams when he was told that Suns fans in the crowd were heartbroken about the news. Durant's response? Classic KD. 'I just felt like, yeah, I mean, they wanted me to go. So it's like, I'm glad we both—you know, they got what they wanted and I got what I wanted, so we can move on. And good luck to them going forward. I'll always remember my time there, but we on something else.' His words made it clear: the breakup wasn't one-sided. Phoenix may have said all the right things publicly, but behind the scenes, both sides were preparing for an exit. And with tensions simmering since the Suns' disappointing 11th-place finish and first-round exit in the previous season, the writing had been on the wall. The moment was surreal, even by NBA standards. Durant found out about the trade, officially, while on stage at Fanatics Fest. Fans in the audience yelled out the news, and all Durant could do was grin and nod. 'Fanatics Fest is crazy. If you haven't been here and been tapped in, anything can happen at Fanatics Fest—like me getting traded. But being a part of the Houston Rockets, I'm looking forward to it. Crazy, crazy last couple weeks, but I'm glad it's over with.' When pressed about whether he knew a trade was coming, Durant admitted he had an idea, but not the exact timing. 'Had an idea, but I didn't know exactly when it was going to happen. So I'm glad we kind of did this on stage. It worked out. Fanatics Fest deserved to have that moment.' Durant was also candid about the stress of having his future in limbo. 'You know, when people can just hang your career in a balance like that and choose what they want to do with your career, it's a nerve-wracking feeling. But being able to kind of dictate what you want to do and being with a team that values you, I'm looking forward to it.' When asked directly if he had a say in where he landed, Durant confirmed he did. 'Most definitely, yeah. I mean, they asked me where I wanted to go, some of my destinations, I gave it to them, and here we are.' So why Houston? 'They just had a great season last year. Love their leadership. Yeah, I felt like I'd be a good addition.' As for what comes next, Durant is taking things one step at a time. When asked if he planned to recruit former teammate Russell Westbrook, who is a free agent right now, KD kept it light. 'Don't know after that. We just got one thing figured out today. We'll figure the rest out as we go, you know? It's still early.' Kevin Durant is a Rocket now. And if his first words after the trade are any indication, he's more than ready to turn the page and write a new story was originally reported by Fadeaway World on Jun 22, 2025, where it first appeared.
