AI agents to enhance interaction with computers, Microsoft says

Microsoft is proposing a new vision for the internet that shifts from user-led interactions to an AI agent-based system.
'AI agents will become the primary way we interact with computers in the future,' says Microsoft chair Satya Nadella.
'They will be able to understand our needs and preferences and proactively help us with tasks and decision-making,' he said.

Agentic AI
Nadella added that its Agentic AI represents a fundamental shift for businesses and individuals alike.
'Understanding the impact of this is critical, as they are already in play.'
This vision includes AI agents that navigate websites, collect data and interact with one another to complete tasks such as booking holidays or managing expense reports.
While Agentic AI is still relatively new, many companies are already building it into their products to develop a digital workforce where humans and automated agents work together to increase productivity and achieve better customer outcomes.

Next evolution
Microsoft South Africa senior architect Michael Mullany, speaking during the Journalist Academy on Agentic AI on Wednesday, said Agentic AI is the next evolution of applied AI because it not only assists users but can act on their behalf.
'These tools use the same data that the employee has permission to access. These agents also inherit the employee's cybersecurity permissions and can seamlessly integrate into companies' digital environments.'
'New reality'
The role of Agentic AI has grown rapidly over the past several months as organisational leaders seek ways to accelerate AI transformation.
Mullany said Microsoft believes that Agents + Copilot + Human Ambition can deliver real AI differentiation for its customers.
'By putting the autonomous capabilities of an agent to work for their businesses, our customers are unlocking AI opportunity to realise greater value.'
'The world is entering a new reality, one in which AI can reason and solve problems in remarkable ways. This intelligence on tap will rewrite the rules of business and transform knowledge work as we know it,' Mullany said.
AI-enhanced future
Microsoft said organisations today must navigate the challenge of preparing for an AI-enhanced future where AI agents will gain increasing levels of capability over time that humans will need to harness as they redesign their businesses.
'Human ambition, creativity and ingenuity will continue to create new economic value and opportunity as we redefine work and workflows,' the company said
Microsoft said that with groundbreaking advancements in reasoning and memory, AI models are now more capable and efficient and can help people solve problems in new ways.

Microsoft backs SA tech SMMEs to succeed in the AI economy

Microsoft SA is inviting qualifying small, medium, and micro enterprises (SMMEs) to apply for the 2025 edition of its Emerging Partner Programme (EPP). This programme represents a significant commitment to empowering SMMEs to become sustainable engines of growth, driving the expansion of local industries and strengthening SA's economy through transformative technologies. Participating SMMEs will receive comprehensive support over a 24-month period, which will include crucial elements designed to help businesses expand operations, reach new markets, and drive meaningful innovation. Additionally, SMMEs will receive accelerated development of technical skills to attain Microsoft Certifications and commercial capabilities through adoption and change management training as well as business development programmes and coaching. According to Lebogang Luvuno, B-BBEE executive at Microsoft SA, the programme is built around the vision of transforming today's SMMEs into tomorrow's big inspirations: 'We aim to empower these businesses to become leaders, fostering resilience and innovation within the South African economy and the communities they operate in. By identifying, recruiting, and nurturing these aspiring partners, the EPP works to build both their technical and commercial capabilities.' The impact of the programme is already being seen through revenue growth and job creation for participating businesses. In the past 18 months, Microsoft has trained 88 partners, comprising 548 individuals, which critically created 107 new jobs and 86 part-time jobs. Partners acquired 109 new customers with a combined revenue growth of R61m in 2024. In a country where job creation and economic resilience are paramount, empowering SMMEs is imperative. Microsoft views supporting these businesses as a powerful catalyst for closing the unemployment gap and building a more inclusive economy for future generations. The EPP is a key part of Microsoft's Enterprise and Supplier Development initiative, specifically designed to support the development of 100% black-owned SMMEs in the ICT industry who aspire to become Microsoft Solutions Partners. The 2025 Microsoft Work Trend Index annual report reveals the emergence of a new kind of organisation — Frontier Firms — powered by AI-human collaboration. With 82% of leaders rethinking core aspects of strategy and operations and 81% expecting agent integration into the company's AI strategy within 18 months, SMMEs can scale, stay agile, and compete with larger firms by using AI to bridge capacity gaps, democratise expertise, and drive outcome-focused operations. The EPP also supports SMMEs in attaining Microsoft Solutions Area Designations, helping them differentiate their expertise and showcase their capabilities with identifiable badging. Becoming a Microsoft partner through programmes like the EPP can be a profitable venture. 'Partners providing services generate a high average ratio of revenue from their own services, and AI is further elevating this. Our EPP aims to accelerate partner success and exposure by leveraging our extensive, diverse, and powerful ecosystem,' says Luvuno. UK to boost 'homegrown talent' in new AI skills drive

LONDON - UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Monday pledged to boost "homegrown talent for the AI age" by teaming up with tech giants to train 7.5 million workers in artificial intelligence skills. Speaking at the start of London's Tech Week, with a line-up of speakers including Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, Starmer said: "In this global race, we can be an AI maker and not an AI taker." Starmer was due to have a one-on-one conversation with the chief of the star Silicon Valley semiconductor firm whose chips are critical for artificial intelligence applications and research. Ahead of the event bringing together industry giants, Starmer announced a government-industry partnership to train 7.5 million workers in AI skills, including in using chatbots and large language models to boost productivity. Tech firms including Nvidia, Google, Microsoft and Amazon committed to make training materials freely available to businesses over the next five years. Google EMEA region President Debbie Weinstein called it a "crucial initiative" essential for developing AI skills, unlocking AI-powered growth "and cementing the UK's position as an AI leader". In his opening speech, Starmer said Britain must build "the digital infrastructure that we need to make sure AI improves our public services". The UK has a "responsibility" to "harness this unprecedented opportunity and to use it to improve the lives of working people", Starmer added. "We are going to build more homes, more labs, more data centres, and we're going to do it much, much more quickly." - Economic growth - His government has pledged to fire up the UK's flagging economy, including with "pro-growth" AI regulations to attract tech investment and turn Britain into an "AI superpower". Microsoft unveils ROG Xbox Ally handheld video game devices

USA - Microsoft on Sunday unveiled its first Xbox-branded handheld gaming devices, touting them as a way to play its vast library of titles anywhere. Two "ROG Xbox Ally" models made in a partnership with Taiwan-based ASUS will be available by the year-end holiday season, Xbox president Sarah Bond said during an online event showcasing games heading for the platform. "The Xbox Ally is an Xbox you can hold in your hands, bringing together the power of Xbox and the freedom of Windows," Bond said. "On this Xbox, you can play games across your entire library, including all the Windows PC game stores from Xbox and to Steam, GOG (Good Old Games platform) and Ubisoft Connect." The peek at Xbox Ally came just days after the release of Nintendo's Switch 2, the handheld console that could score record early sales for the Japanese "Super Mario" creator. The Nintendo device, which features a bigger screen and more processing power, is an upgrade to the Switch that became a global phenomenon with hit games such as "Animal Crossing." Microsoft promised to disclose pricing and release date details for Xbox Ally in the coming months. Both Xbox handhelds appeared similar to Microsoft console controllers in terms of buttons, toggles and grips but looked elongated to provide room for center screens. "When you power on your Xbox Ally, you'll boot directly into the Xbox full screen experience, a new feature optimized specifically for handheld gaming," Microsoft said in a release. "The Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X are perfect for players looking to take an approachable gaming experience with you during travels - whether it's between airports, or between the comfiest chairs in the living room."
