Kennedy Center Revenue Crashes After Trump Hijacks Program
President Donald Trump's MAGA makeover of D.C.'s Kennedy Center is sputtering amid plunging sales.
Revenue from subscriptions for the upcoming season of programming is down 36 percent from last year—dropping from $4.4 million in 2024 to just $2.8 million so far this year, The Washington Post reported, citing data shared by former Kennedy Center employees and confirmed by a current staff member.
Single-ticket sales also dropped 50 percent in April and May, compared with the same period last year, according to The New York Times.
The plummeting sales suggest Trump—despite boasting at a recent board dinner that he had 'eliminated DEI initiatives' and 'brought back family-friendly programming that will attract large audiences once again'—may have pushed an already struggling institution deeper into financial trouble.
Revenue from theater performances, which Trump vowed to make 'non-woke,' took the hardest hit, dropping 82 percent in the first two weeks of the subscription campaign compared to last year.
More than a dozen acts canceled their planned runs in the wake of Trump's takeover, including the wildly popular musical Hamilton—with creator Lin-Manuel Miranda stating, 'The Kennedy Center was not created in this spirit, and we're not going to be a part of it while it is the Trump Kennedy Center.'
Trump, who in his youth dreamed of becoming a theater producer, has suggested bringing in musicals like Cats, Phantom of the Opera, and Fiddler on the Roof to replace 'woke' programming.
One former Kennedy Center staffer who spoke to the Post said, 'If I am the new administration, I am certainly worried by these numbers, especially the theater dollars,' noting that theater is 'by far the largest driver of revenue for the center for ticket sales.'
Richard Grennell, the MAGA firebrand whom Trump appointed as president of the center, has repeatedly sounded the alarm over the institution's financial health, accusing previous leaders of mismanaging its finances.
In an effort to improve the center's finances, Trump will attend a gala fundraiser for the center next week. Invitations offer a gold sponsorship for $2 million and silver for $100,000 the Times said, and both include photo opportunities with the president.
Following the fundraiser, Trump is set to watch a performance of Les Misérables—one of his longtime favorites, per the Times. However, at least 10 cast members are reportedly planning to boycott his attendance.

'Squad' erupts in fury as Trump takes bold action against Iranian nuclear threat
Members of the congressional "Squad" unleashed sharp criticism of President Donald Trump after he ordered a barrage of missile and bomb strikes on Iranian nuclear sites late Saturday. Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., was the most vocal of all, tweeting several times about the offensive. Responding to cryptocurrency exchange CEO Arjun Sethi's comment about U.S. "elites" being most united by war "especially against Muslims in the Middle East," Tlaib remarked, "Yep and it's so f---ing sick." "President Trump sending US troops to bomb Iran without the consent of Congress is a blatant violation of the Constitution. The American people do not want another forever war," Tlaib added in a separate message. "Instead of listening to the American people, Trump is listening to War Criminal Netanyahu who lied about Iraq and is lying once again about Iran. Congress must act immediately to exert its war powers and stop this unconstitutional war." She also retweeted right-wing Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., who had commented "this (strike) is not constitutional." Squad Rep. Delia Ramirez, D-Ill., echoed Tlaib's concerns about "endless war," and called Trump and Netanyahu "warmongers." "It is the people who suffer the illegal & irresponsible actions of authoritarian leaders," she said. "Only Congress has the power to declare war. Omar also shared a quote from Bill Clinton, saying prior to the strike that Trump should "diffuse" the situation and that Netanyahu has "long wanted to fight Iran." Rep. Ayanna Pressley, the Boston lawmaker who also identifies with the Squad, said Trump violated the Constitution and risking innocent lives. In Pittsburgh, Rep. Summer Lee said Trump is "acting fully outside of his authority and is once again trampling on the Constitution." "This is an illegal and terrifying escalation. Dropping bombs on Iran brings us closer to war, not peace, and he is putting millions of lives at stake. Congress must immediately pass our War Powers Resolution to rein him in." Lee mocked Trump as "your hypocritical 'anti-war' president who just illegally struck Iran and is putting countless lives at risk." Later Saturday, Sen. Markwayne Mullin, R-Okla., said the Squad and others crying out about the War Powers Act, saying that courts have ruled it refers to deploying troops, not what Trump has done. Protests erupt calling for Trump, U.S. to say out of war in Middle East
Americans are taking to the streets to protest U.S. military involvement in Iran. Protestors expect their numbers to swell this week. WASHINGTON — Protests against the U.S. military involvement in Iran, including some in New York and outside the White House June 22, are expected to continue throughout the week in communities across the country. The protests come on the heels of President Donald Trump ordering attacks on three nuclear facilities in Iran. Demonstrations were underway Sunday, June 22 in Washington, D.C., New York and Boston, according to social media posts. 'The people of the United States don't want another forever war. The people of the United States want money for people's needs!'' the Party for Socialism and Liberation posted on X. The protests, some organized in part by ANSWER (Act Now to Stop War and End Racism) Coalition, an anti-war group, call for Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to stop the war on Iran. ANSWER is a left-wing group that has organized protests against the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and other U.S. military actions, including some that have drawn hundreds of thousands of participants. Earlier this year, the organization was part of a coalition of groups across the country protesting in the days after Trump's inauguration. Other protests are planned in the coming week, including a national ''Stop the War on Iran'' march slated for June 28 in Washington, D.C. Others protested across the globe, including in Japan and Iran. Trump administration officials defended the attacks Sunday morning, and President Trump threatened possible further actions. "If peace does not come quickly, we will go after those other targets with precision, speech and skill," Trump said Saturday at the White House. Some Democrats, however, blasted Trump 'unilateral decision' to attack Iran without Congressional approval, calling it illegal. 'This move, a rash sequel to his withdrawal from the nuclear deal, puts our nation, our troops, and innocents at grave risk,'' Rep. James Clyburn said in a statement.
