Melville Koppies Highveld grasslands are one of earth's endangered ecological treasures.
Academics worldwide are researching and recording this asset.
Recently, Professor Sally Archibald from Wits brought some fellow academics on a field trip to the Koppies.
Book a personalised guided tour (079 532 0083 or wendavid@mweb.co.za) to learn more about the grasslands, heritage and more on a day that suits you.
The Koppies are open every Sunday from 08.00 to 11.30.
Self-guide yourself on a hike from 500m to 5km and there is storytelling on the second Sunday of the month (next one is on May 11, Mother's Day) and an 8km guided hike on the last Sunday of the month.
Entry is R100 per person, under 18 is R50 and those under five get in free.
There is safe parking opposite the entrance to Melville Koppies at Marks Park Sports Club in Judith Road, Emmarentia.
All income generated is used for the conservation of the Koppies.

Melville Koppies hike educates young explorers while supporting conservation

A group of White Horse Cubs, accompanied by their parents and Cub masters, embarked on an educational hike at Melville Koppies. Along the way, they made stops to share interesting facts about the area's history, provided by their guide. The guide shared insights about the early farmers who once inhabited the Koppies. The Cubs participated in hands-on activities, including grinding sorghum, painting their faces with red ochre, and searching for specific plants on a treasure hunt.
