Michael J Fox to make TV comeback in first role after devastating health battle

Daily Mirror16-05-2025

Back to the Future star Michael J. Fox is gearing up to be part of the cast of a TV show for the first time since 2020, after his health condition deteriorated
Michael J. Fox has announced his exciting return to television as he prepares for a guest role in the popular Apple+ comedy show Shrinking. The series revolves around the lives of three psychiatrists, played by Harrison Ford, Jason Segel, and Jessica Williams.
The main characters, Dr Paul, Jimmy, and Gaby, all support each other through their own personal struggles as they work to help their patients in sometimes unconventional ways. Fox's role in the third season of the series has not been revealed yet, but there is a possibility that it will be linked to Dr Paul's ongoing Parkinson's storyline.

Fox himself stepped away from acting as his Parkinson's symptoms worsened in 2020, and he started to experience issues with his speech. He was diagnosed with the neurological disease three decades ago, and fans have theorised that his character will address what it is like to live with Parkinson's on-screen, given Dr Paul's season two character arc focused on his health struggles and fears that he would have to walk away from psychiatry.

This stint on Shrinking will also mean the Hollywood A-lister gets to collaborate with the show's co-creator Bill Lawrence again, after they previously both worked on Spin City.
Lawrence previously admitted that Fox influenced his portrayal of Dr Paul's battle with Parkinson's on Shrinking, saying: "It's cool to get to write about things you care about now. And Michael J Fox is my first mentor. So we wanted to represent it in hopefully an inspiring and not sad or tragic way.
"I found the first mentor in my life and career, Michael J Fox, to be so inspiring. The way he took it in stride and continues to work harder than anybody I know. And we want to kind of carry that spirit if we can into the show."
The last TV show Fox starred in was American legal drama The Good Fight, which is about a lawyer who loses her life savings after being scammed and is forced to start again.

His last big film role was in the 2019 sci-fi blockbuster See You Yesterday as Mr Lockhart, the science teacher of the two teen leads who attempt to crack time travel.
The Back to the Future star has reportedly been managing his Parkinson's symptoms with the drug carbidopa/levodopa, and he is also said to have had a thalamotomy in 1998.
He previously spoke about how "tough" it is to live with the disease, telling The Guardian: "It didn't defeat me. I wish it was a heroic thing. I'm not saying: 'Yeah! Bring it, bring it!'
"I hate it. It sucks. It's a piece of s**t. It's tough to get up in the morning and keep going. But I have a beautiful family and this office with trophies."
He also shared that being unable to act was "a struggle", adding: "It's very difficult. I get sick of talking about me. I know me too well."

First images from world's largest digital camera reveal galaxies and cosmic collisions

The images and videos from the Vera C. Rubin Observatory represent just over 10 hours of test observations and are sneak peeks ahead of an event Monday that will be livestreamed. Astronomers have been eagerly anticipating the first images from the new observatory, with experts saying it could help solve some of the universe's most enduring mysteries and revolutionize our understanding of the cosmos. 'We're entering a golden age of American science,' Harriet Kung, acting director of the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science, said in a statement. The Vera C. Rubin Observatory is jointly operated by the Department of Energy and the U.S. National Science Foundation. The facility, named after the American astronomer who discovered evidence of dark matter in the universe, sits atop Cerro Pachón, a mountain in central Chile. The observatory is designed to take roughly 1,000 images of the Southern Hemisphere sky each night, covering the entire visible Southern sky every three to four nights. 'Through this remarkable scientific facility, we will explore many cosmic mysteries, including the dark matter and dark energy that permeate the universe,' Brian Stone, chief of staff at the National Science Foundation, said in a statement.

Ocean off Shetland coast turns green due to natural phenomenon

Nasa's Earth Observatory published the photo of the ocean with a burst of green colour in the middle, and the Fair Isle is visible at the top left corner, earlier this month. According to the American space agency, a large algae bloom, phytoplankton, amassed in the waters near Scotland's Shetland Islands. Scientists added that despite their microscopic size, the plant-like organisms can become visible in satellite images when they explode in numbers, forming what is known as a phytoplankton 'bloom.' READ MORE: Shetlanders raise £10k for Gaza charities through pop-up art exhibition The bloom likely contains coccolithophores as well, notably Gephrocapsa Huxleyi, which is armoured with plates of highly reflective calcium carbonate, researchers added. However, scientists will need water samples to confirm the types of phytoplankton present. (Image: NASA) Nasa said such blooms do commonly occur in the northern North Sea, but on rarer occasions, they can turn up in Scottish coastal waters. The OLI-2 (Operational Land Imager-2) on Landsat 9 captured this image on June 13, 2025, and the part of the bloom shown in the picture spanned a width of around 160 kilometres (100 miles).

Love Island faces 'lowest ratings yet' in series first as US version soars

Love Island UK fans aren't tuning into the ITV2 programme as much as they used to while the US version is getting more and more popular Love Island's latest series only started earlier this month with a viewership of one million on the first day, but the ITV2 programme failed to keep fans interested as the numbers dwindled over the weeks. Four years ago, the series launch brought in 2.5 million viewers while the 2022 series had 2.4 million viewers. By the next year, the first episode dropped to 1.3 million and last year's premiere had 1.7 million viewers. With this year's series, less and less people tuned into the dating competition. Excluding Unseen Bits, the first week of the new series averaged 855,000 viewers, much lower than 2024's numbers. ‌ ‌ The opening week averaged 144,000 for 16-24s. Many have been complaining about the series in recent years, with some complaining about it being "boring". Former Love Island winner Amber Rose Gill even hit out at the current state of UK reality TV, claiming it's become too 'soft' and over-policed by viewers who get offended over everything. In a fiery social media rant, the 2019 champ said the reason reality telly is 'dead' is because people can't say anything without backlash - calling out recent outrage over a Love Island contestant saying another girl was 'too glamorous for a 9-5'. Amber fumed: 'I've just seen articles about a girl saying someone's too glamorous for a 9-5 and everyone's like, 'You can't say that!' I need everyone to get several grips.' She continued: 'No wonder they come f**ing media trained, because God forbid you say anything out of line. I remember some of the s*** I said and trust me, I say worse in private!' ‌ Meanwhile, a lot of Love Island fans have turned to the US version of the show. The American version even had Megan Thee Stallion as a guest for one of their challenges. It was recently reported that series seven of the US show was the second most-watched streaming show on US television. From June 6 until June 12, the programme racked up 1.2 billion minutes viewed across nine available episodes. Casa Amor is about to arrive with Big Brother star Zak Srakaew entering the Fiji villa in a first for the programme. He burst onto the scene two years ago but didn't last long after becoming the second housemate to get the boot. ‌ He moved to Manchester from Thailand when he was a child and is in the States and after finding fame on the show two years ago, he is now hunting for love. There has already been plenty of drama so far and the UK audience are keen to know what's happening across the pond. But they will have to wait to see Zak in action - Love Island USA is not currently available to watch in the UK, but it may air on ITVX and ITV2 in the future, with previous seasons of the reality show available.
