Paul Mullin's Wrexham exit close after Ryan Reynolds warning and frank admission
Paul Mullin looks set to leave Wrexham this summer after being frozen out by manager Phil Parkinson during the second half of their promotion-winning campaign in League One Wrexham star Paul Mullin looks to be on the brink of leaving the club, with discussions about a loan move to Wigan Athletic advancing. Since joining in July 2021, the striker has been a key figure for the Red Dragons, netting an impressive 110 goals over the last four seasons. However, he found himself sidelined during the latter half of their most recent campaign, as manager Phil Parkinson left him out of the squad. After undergoing back surgery last summer, Mullin had a shaky start to the season. The 30-year-old then quickly lost his place in the team after Parkinson bolstered his attacking options by bringing in Sam Smith and Jay Rodriguez in the January transfer window. The strategy paid off as Wrexham clinched promotion from League One to the Championship in April. However, it could spell the end of Mullin's tenure at the club, especially following the recent signing of Plymouth striker Ryan Hardie. Wigan have been heavily linked with the Liverpudlian since the season ended, and according to the Mail, talks are now underway regarding a loan deal. Mullin is a fan favourite and well-liked by Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. While he has tried to quash rumours of a falling-out with Parkinson, during a recent episode of the Welcome to Wrexham documentary, he confessed to feeling aggrieved about being left out of the team. "I let that get to me, to be honest, from where I've been to then only being allowed to play four games and finding myself being left out of the team," Mullin said. "I resented it and I carried that for weeks because I felt it was unjust. "I think I'm more annoyed now. It's the annoyance of training every single day, doing everything I can, and looking back on everything I've done. "I feel like I was a main part of why we got into this situation, and then I'm not being allowed the platform to get back there, or the opportunity to go and do it again. It's difficult. I don't know what's caused him (Parkinson) to trust me less, but he clearly does." In candid moments recorded before the close of the season, he added: "Just to play one game in the Championship with Wrexham would be worth absolutely everything. It would be the icing on the cake for this story and who knows where it could end. "I've enjoyed every minute here, and if we could get to the Championship, then that'd be phenomenal. From a personal perspective, I don't think I'll have any part to play in it going forward." Ex-Wrexham boss Dean Saunders recently said that he thinks Mullin can muscle his way back into Parkinson's favour. However, the former Liverpool and Aston Villa striker also cautioned Reynolds and McElhenney that the striker may struggle stepping up a level. "I absolutely think Paul Mullin could score goals in the Championship," Saunders told "It wasn't long ago that we were talking about him playing for Wales. "He has always scored goals in every league he's played in, so he is capable of scoring goals in the Championship. According to researchers Zhejiang University in China, most Parkinson's treatments only slow the disease's progression, so early diagnosis is important for managing symptoms. But current tests for spotting the disease - such as brain scans or rating scales - can be expensive or subjective, they said. Now, a study published to Analytical Chemistry suggests that earwax could be used as a cost effective way to screen people for Parkinson's. Researchers claimed they'd developed a new AI system that could help catch the disease at an early stage, using earwax samples. Previous studies have shown that changes in sebum - an oily substance secreted by the skin - could help identify people with Parkinson's. Sebum from people with the disease may have a characteristic, musky smell because volatile organic compounds released by sebum are altered by disease progression. But sebum on the surface of the skin isn't a reliable substance for testing as it's exposed to pollution or humidity, which can change its composition. However, sebum in ear canals is sheltered from the elements. Seeing as the oily substance is the main component of earwax and it's easy to sample, researchers decided to use it for their screening tool. Good Morning Britain star reveals Parkinson's diagnosis after tragic death of his wife To identify the compounds released by sebum in people with Parkinson's, the researchers swabbed the ear canals of 209 participants, more than half of which were diagnosed with the condition. They then analysed wax samples, identifying four volatile organic compounds specific to people with Parkinson's. Those include ethylbenzene, 4-ethyltoluene, pentanal, and 2-pentadecyl-1,3-dioxolane. Researchers said these could serve as potential biomarkers for Parkinson's. Using these findings, they were able to develop a system that inexpensively screens for Parkinson's. It affects around 153,000 people in the UK. People with Parkinson's don't have enough of the chemical dopamine because some of the nerve cells that make it have stopped working. This can cause a range of more than 40 symptoms, but the three main ones are: Tremor (shaking) Slow movement Rigidity (muscle stiffness) Other common signs include: Mild memory and thinking problems Trouble sleeping Issues with balance Pain Anxiety and depression Shuffling walk with very small steps Difficulty making facial expressions Loss of sense of smell Problems peeing Constipation The four main ways of managing Parkinson's include medication, staying active, exploring occupational therapy, physical therapy and speech and language therapy, and monitoring symptoms. They found it was able to categorise samples with and without Parkinson's with 94 percent accuracy. Researchers suggested their system could be used to a first-line screening tool for early Parkinson's detection and could help improve care for condition by making it possible to administer treatments earlier. Author Hao Dong said: 'This method is a small-scale single-center experiment in China." 2 'The next step is to conduct further research at different stages of the disease, in multiple research centres and among multiple ethnic groups, in order to determine whether this method has greater practical application value.' Earlier this year, scientists warned of a surge in cases of Parkinson's. They said 25 million people across the world will be living with the debilitating brain condition by 2050. Researchers from Capital Medical University in Beijing, China, estimated that an ageing population would drive the surge in cases of Parkinson's disease over the next 25 years. According to Parkinson's UK, the condition is the fastest growing neurological condition in the world.

Stories first published by The Telegraph earlier this week claimed that a United States-based private equity group, fronted by Bale and involving members of the Storch family, was in discussions to purchase full control of the League One club. However, Parkinson was quick to dampen the excitement surrounding the links when questioned at new head coach Tom Cleverley's unveiling at Home Park on Thursday. 'That was really speculation,' Parkinson said. 'You would expect me to say that we are not in a position to be able to talk about any individuals or any investors, but of course when we have got the opportunity to do that we will do.' While neither confirming nor directly denying contact with Bale's consortium, Parkinson reiterated majority owner Simon Hallett's long-standing openness to external investment. Hallett revealed on May 31 that a year-long negotiation with a potential investor had collapsed, and that the club continues to seek the right partners for sustainable long-term growth. Article continues below 'I think Simon has said this numerous times, it's about getting the right people to be involved in the club for the long term,' Parkinson added. 'Simon and the other shareholders have committed for this season to do that and provide the right finances across the board. We will continue discussions for the long term.' The latest reports placed Bale as the public face of the American-led group and suggested he could even assume a chairman-style role if the bid succeeded—mirroring the involvement of former teammate Luka Modric, now a minority shareholder at Swansea City. The Welshman has been out of football since confirming his retirement back in January 2023, shortly after leading his side into the World Cup in Qatar, where they were unfortunately eliminated in the group stages. He finished his club career in the US playing for Los Angeles FC and still spends a lot of time in America. Other celebrity names below the Premier League include NFL legend Tom Brady, who purchased a stake in Birmingham City before they won promotion back to the Championship last season. Meanwhile, American golfers Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas snapped up shares in Leeds United before the club sealed their return to the Premier League. Bale has no previous connection to Plymouth, and the move would clearly come as a huge surprise, although a takeover of the Pilgrims has seemingly been on the cards for some time. Argyle's leadership, however, appear to be keen to keep expectations in check as they attempt to stabilise after a turbulent 18 months that have included five head coaches and relegation from the Championship. Parkinson said the club remains focused on bouncing back under new boss Cleverley, while also building a more robust foundation behind the scenes. 'This is about the long term,' he said. 'It's about how we grow as a football club, how we develop, how we bring players on. We want long-term growth, not just going up and down.' For Bale, whose retirement in early 2023 ended a glittering playing career—including five Champions League titles and stints with Spurs, Real Madrid and LAFC—the links to Argyle mark the latest twist in his post-football evolution. While he's since built a profile as a businessman and pundit, a role in club ownership would represent a significant step into football's boardroom. Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson on signing another striker
Hardie has joined Wrexham from Plymouth Argyle for an undisclosed fee, with the 28-year-old signing a deal until the end of the 2027-28 season. Hardie scored 74 goals in 248 games for the Home Park outfit after signing in January 2020 - initially on loan before making the move permanent from Blackpool the following year - and reached double figures in each of the last four seasons. Parkinson is not short of strikers heading into the new Championship campaign, although he has admitted that some players under contract could be allowed to move on before the window closes to make room for new recruits. Sam Smith, Jay Rodriguez, Jack Marriott, Paul Mullin, Ollie Palmer and Mo Faal, as well as Hardie, are frontmen on the books at The Racecourse and although there could be further ins and outs at that end of the pitch, the Reds' boss says it is vital he has choices in the attacking department. "Striker options are very important in any football club," said Parkinson, who released veteran frontman Steven Fletcher at the end of last season after Wrexham clinched an historic third successive promotion. "We have always had good options at the top end oft the pitch, it is absolutely crucial, and we have brought Ryan in to strengthen that department. "We are looking forward to working with him in the coming seasons." Meanwhile, another striker who played for Wrexham last season is leaving Burton Albion. MORE WREXHAM AFC NEWS Jón Dadi Bödvarsson will depart the Brewers upon the expiry of his contract this month. Iceland international Bodvarsson signed for Wrexham on a short-term deal in October to add to Parkinson's attacking options. The 33-year-old made seven appearances for the Reds and left by mutual sent in January. He signed for Burton and scored five goals in 13 games for the Brewers, helping keep Gary Bowyer's side in League One, but has decided to return to Iceland.
