Eagles coach Nick Sirianni breaks down a lopsided Super Bowl win: ‘This game doesn't have to be complicated'

New York Times10-02-2025

Less than 12 hours after hoisting the Lombardi trophy, Philadelphia Eagles coach Nick Sirianni kept things simple at his morning news conference, just as he did game planning for the Super Bowl.
'This game doesn't have to be complicated,' Sirianni said, discussing defensive coordinator Vic Fangio's plan Sunday. 'At the end of the day, did you tackle well? Did you get off blocks well? Did you hustle to the ball? Our guys did that. Do you take the ball away? Our guys did that. Vic did an unbelievable job.'

Philadelphia sacked Patrick Mahomes a career-high six times on Sunday night — becoming the eighth team in Super Bowl history with at least six sacks — all without blitzing once. According to Next Gen Stats, there was a point in the third quarter where the defense generated a dazzling 52.4 percent pressure rate against Mahomes without sending more than four pass rushers.
'Just like on offense, the game dictates just how the game's played,' Sirianni said. 'So we didn't need pressures at all yesterday. We were getting home with four and being able to keep seven in coverage.'
The game plan was a continuation of what Sirianni calls the team's 'core values': 'Tough, detailed, together.' He echoed those sentiments in his pregame speech, when again Sirianni took the simple approach.
'The 'Any Given Sunday' talk by Al Pacino was really awesome,' Sirianni said, 'but it don't work that way, right? My job is not to inspire them, it's more to just remind them of the things they already know. I keep it really short. I talk a lot all during the week. So before the game, it pretty much is consistent Week 1 to Week 37 — whatever we are on.'
The 43-year-old Eagles coach now has the most wins of any coach — regular season and postseason combined — in their first four years of coaching, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said at the news conference. Sirianni has yet to coach a losing season and made the Super Bowl twice in the last three years.
Sirrianni and Eagles QB Jalen Hurts became the first head coach and quarterback duo in Eagles history to reach two Super Bowls. Hurts, the Super Bowl MVP, said he approached the game similarly to Sirianni and prioritized only what he could control.
When the Chiefs took away a major portion of Philadelphia's offensive game plan by holding Saquon Barkley to just 2.3 yards per carry on 20 attempts, Hurts posted the third-highest completion percentage of the season (77.3 percent), passing for 221 yards, two touchdowns and an interception while rushing for 72 yards and another touchdown. Hurts' 72 rushing yards were a Super Bowl record for quarterbacks. He also became the first player to throw for 200 yards and rush for 50 yards in a Super Bowl multiple times.

'It's never been about what anyone else is doing,' Hurts said. 'It's always been about you yourself, the team and the work and the effort that you guys put in as a collective group. Just really trying to dominate your role, dominate your box.'
Up 40-22 with under two minutes to play, backup QB Kenny Pickett entered the game in place of Hurts to kneel it out in victory formation. Even then, Hurts was not ready to personally celebrate.
'I've challenged myself, we've challenged ourselves really, to just lock in on focusing, having that focus and being able to finish,' Hurts said. 'And you get so focused in, you kind of, 'I can't.' It's not over until the fat lady sings, until the clock hits zero. It required that level of focus.
'When you're in that mode, you process and everyone's coming to dap you up, and just my innate state, my personality and my competitive nature, I don't do well when everybody's congratulating (me). The game ain't over. But it was a joyful moment. All of it, it was well deserved.'

4 Broncos players, 1 coach make ESPN's All Quarter Century team

ESPN recently compiled a list of players to headline their NFL All Quarter Century team. The list, which detailed the best NFL players since 2000, featured the likes of Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady and Priest Holmes (yes, he's ranked over Adrian Peterson and Ladainian Tomlinson, in which the former is on their practice squad.) Nevertheless, the good news is four Denver Broncos players and a former coach made the Quarter Century Team. Of course, Peyton Manning, Champ Bailey and DeMarcus Ware would come to mind. But Brian Dawkins, who spent a majority of his career with the Philadelphia Eagles, also spent three seasons with the Broncos for the latter part of his career and still notched two Pro Bowls (2009, 2011) and an All-Pro nod (2009). Lastly, Wade Phillips, the architect of the 'No Fly Zone' defense of the 2015 Super Bowl champions, was named as the defensive coordinator for the team. Phillips had stints as a head coach, but his time as a DC with the Broncos will have him immortalized, just like with this list. Check out the complete list here. Matt Leinart reveals he was nearly traded to New York Giants in 2010

In 2010, three years after they triumphed over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII, the New York Giants were forced into the quarterback market. They had lost veteran David Carr to the San Francisco 49ers and needed someone to back up Eli Manning. At the time, the Giants settled on Sage Rosenfels but weren't entirely satisfied with that room. During a recent episode of Throwbacks with Matt Leinart and Jerry Ferrara, Leinart revealed that he was nearly traded from the Arizona Cardinals to the Giants to fill that role. "They were trying to trade me to the New York Football Giants... to back up Eli," Leinart said. "I ended up getting cut, and I signed with the Texans like three days later. That's when I went to Houston. "But there were conversations -- and I'm almost positive about this -- that (head coach Ken Whisenhunt) was like, 'Hey, we've been talking to the Giants about potentially trading you.' ... But yeah, it was the Giants. My agent was like, they liked me." Leinart said he preferred to be released as opposed to being traded, giving him the freedom to choose his next destination. That's exactly what happened, and he ended up with the Texans. "So, that almost happened. I was almost traded to the Giants," he said. Leinart, a first-round pick of the Cardinals in the 2006 NFL draft, spent two seasons with the Texans before a year with the Oakland Raiders. He eventually wrapped things up with the Buffalo Bills in 2013. In 33 career games (18 starts), Leinart completed 57.1 percent of his passes for 4,065 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 21 interceptions. The Giants, meanwhile, settled on Rosenfels and Jim Sorgi as their backups in 2010 before re-signing Carr to back up Manning in 2011. They went on to win the Super Bowl that year, again defeating the Patriots.

Odell Beckham has 3-word response after being told to return to New York Giants

Could wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. return to the New York Giants? That question has been asked every single year since Beckham was traded to the Cleveland Browns in 2019. Over that span, Beckham has expressed both anger and frustration with the Giants, while also looking back on his tenure fondly. Time has a way of changing perception, and seven years after that trade, Beckham recently revealed the heartbreak he felt at the time. "I never, ever wanted to leave the New York Giants," Beckham Jr. said. "The reason you heard me talking about what was going on was because I was pissed because, where I come from in college, if we lost one game, our season was over. "This was the organization I got drafted to. They believed in me. So if the Giants went and won a Super Bowl, I would be happy. But deep down inside, I wanted to be the one. No question. So it's definitely you'll always hold that. But then someone like me, I went to the LA Rams, won a Super Bowl. But still, you just want that." And now we circle back around. The Giants have been actively searching for wide receivers to add to their roster, most recently visiting with veteran Gabe Davis. Might general manager Joe Schoen consider the 32-year-old Beckham? That seems unlikely, but Beckham doesn't appear to be closing the door. During a panel appearance at Fanatics Fest NYC on Saturday, a fan yelled out, encouraging Beckham to return to the Giants. The 2014 Offensive Rookie of the Year offered a smile and a three-word response. "I got you," Beckham said. The decision is obviously not Beckham's to make, but stranger things have happened. As former Giants general manager Jerry Reese would remind, "Never say never." During his time with the Giants, Beckham was arguably the most electrifying offensive player the franchise had ever seen. He dazzled with feats of athleticism rarely seen, highlighted by unbelievable one-handed catches and elite route running. He was lightning in a bottle, capable of taking it to the house any time he touched the ball. Beckham is no longer that level of superstar, hindered by various injuries, but that's not to say he doesn't have something to offer a team or locker room. And it would be somewhat fitting to see him end his NFL career back where it began.
