Brewers Just Set up the Most Highly Anticipated Pitching Matchup of the Season Against Pirates
Brewers Just Set up the Most Highly Anticipated Pitching Matchup of the Season Against Pirates originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Pitching matchups between highly touted players happen quite often. Opening Day is filled with elite pitchers going toe-to-toe as teams line up their aces right out of the gate. Rarely though, during the middle of the season, do we get a matchup of starting pitchers so juicy, so intriguing, it draws the attention of the entire league as soon as the probable starters were announced. Advertisement That's exactly what's coming this week between the Milwaukee Brewers and Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday afternoon at American Family Field. It'll be reigning NL Rookie of the Year Paul Skenes on the mound for the Pirates against flamethrowing rookie Jacob Misiorowski for the Brewers. ' © Jesse Johnson-Imagn Images Paul Skenes vs Jacob Misiorowski The Brewers and Pirates announced their probable starters for the next series on Sunday and just like many had projected for the last week, the two pitchers with perhaps the most electric stuff in baseball will be pitching in the same game. Skenes has a 1.85 ERA on the season with 106 strikeouts. His fastball averages 98 MPH and he's hit triple-digits 28 times this season. He's coming off a runaway Rookie of the Year campaign and All Star start after being the #1 overall pick in the 2023 Draft. Advertisement Misiorowski didn't allow a hit for his first 11 IP in the majors and has already thrown 52 pitches north of 100 MPH. He's already sending his hat to the Baseball Hall of Fame and has set an MLB record for longest stretch without allowing a hit to start a career as a starting pitcher. Skenes is in the 100th percentile in the league in Pitching Run Value and the 99th percentile in Fastball Run Value. Misiorowski is 100th percentile in extension and 99th percentile in Fastball Velocity. While Misiorowski doesn't have the MLB volume that Skenes does to qualify in other stats, it doesn't take some of those numbers to know the quality of stuff. You'd have trouble finding two pitchers in Major League Baseball with more electric stuff than these two. Getting both of them against each other in the same game will be appointment television for baseball fans everywhere, not just in Milwaukee and Pittsburgh. Advertisement It'll be a Wednesday afternoon getaway game to wrap up the series between the Brewers and Pirates, but no one will be able to get their eyes away from this game with these two masters of their craft on the bump. Ex-Phillies Fan Favorite Gets Update on Brewers Future Amid Trade Rumors
Ex-Phillies Fan Favorite Gets Update on Brewers Future Amid Trade Rumors originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Former Philadelphia Phillies fan favorite Rhys Hoskins is expected to be on the trade market this summer. Advertisement Hoskins, who tore his ACL for the Phillies in spring training, unfortunately had a tough ending in Philadelphia. It was horrible to see things go the way they did, but things happen, and both sides seem to understand that. However, one could argue that Hoskins would be needed on the Phillies' roster now, as he's a viable right-handed hitter, which could allow them to move Bryce Harper back to the outfield. With Harper stating in the past that he'd be interested in moving back to the outfield if the team landed a competent first baseman, why not try to bring back the fan favorite who currently has 10 home runs? Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson (59) looks on from the dugout against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC LeClaire-Imagn Images The Athletic recently predicted that he'd be traded at the deadline. Advertisement 'While Hoskins has been better this season than last, he still hasn't returned to the level of production he consistently reached while in Philadelphia. He still walks a good amount and can take good pitchers yard, the way he did in an outstanding NLCS back in 2022 with the Phillies. 'Even if they're close to contending, the Brewers may be motivated to move Hoskins to save the $4 million buyout on a 2026 mutual option that is unlikely to be exercised,' they wrote. Hoskins was a much better player during his time in Philadelphia than he has been with the Milwaukee Brewers, but that isn't much of a surprise given the gruesome knee injury. However, he still has a 111 OPS+ this season, and hit 26 bombs a year ago in 131 games. If the Phillies could land him for a cheap price, he could at least be a platoon bat. Ilkay Gundogan scored twice as Manchester City sealed passage to the knockout rounds of the Club World Cup with a 6-0 demolition of UAE side Al Ain on Sunday. New face Rayan Cherki scored after the break, as did Gundogan and Oscar Bobb. Haaland also recorded an assist, as did new captain Bernardo Silva and Rodri. City kept nearly 75 percent of the ball producing almost four expected goals and out-attempting Al Ain 21-5. Phil Foden had a goal and an assist in the game, though everything didn't go perfectly to plan as Rico Lewis was sent off in the 88th minute for a tackle on Samuel Obeng. Guardiola called the referee's decision to show a straight red card, 'unnecessary.' MORE — How much prize money will each club get at Club World Cup? 'His leg was little bit high, but he was on the grass,' Guardiola said after the game. 'Touches the ball with the speed that they go through, your leg has to be a little bit high and the other player down. It was not intentional and it was a red card versus Crystal Palace after the referee came and said it wasn't a red card. Rico never had intention to hurt anyone. A little bit unnecessary, the red card. The referee is the boss and had other intentions, VAR checked it and we have to accept the decision.' Manchester City team news, focus OUT: Mateo Kovacic (foot) Al Ain team news, focus Al Ain found themselves 4-0 down to Juventus at halftime and ended up losing their opening game 5-0 as Randal Kolo Muani and Francisco Conceicao each scored twice, along with Kenan Yildiz. 33-year-old Togolese striker Kodjo Laba, who led Al Ain this season with 20 goals in 21 games, had most of his side's best chances to score but two of his three shots were saved rather well. Manchester City vs Al Ain prediction In a sense, the Club World Cup is perfectly timed for Man City, who already had a handful of new players that need to get acclimated before next season, so the intensity (and quality) from them remains incredibly high. That spells bad news for Al Ain, and maybe everyone else in the competition. Manchester City 4-0 Al Ain.
