FIFA Club World Cup: Bayern hammer 10 past Auckland City, PSG ease past Atletico Madrid

RTÉ News6 days ago

Bayern Munich began their Club World Cup campaign in emphatic fashion with a ruthless 10-0 demolition of Auckland City on Sunday, as Jamal Musiala marked his return from injury with a brilliant second-half hat-trick in a commanding team display.
Kingsley Coman opened the scoring in the sixth minute, heading home at the far post after a Joshua Kimmich corner.
The Bundesliga champions then took full control with a three-goal burst in as many minutes, as Sacha Boey smashed in a low shot from a Coman pass in the 18th minute for his first goal for Bayern, Michael Olise added a third with a simple tap-in moments later and Coman netted his second in the 21st minute.
Thomas Mueller then made it 5-0 just before the break, volleying in from close range after an Olise assist, and the French winger grabbed his second with a superb curling effort from outside the box.
With a dominant lead at half-time, Bayern coach Vincent Kompany made several changes, including handing a senior debut to 17-year-old Lennart Karl.
Substitute Musiala curled a trademark finish into the far corner in the 67th minute, before calmly converting a penalty he earned six minutes later and pouncing on a defensive blunder to score his third in the 84th.
Mueller also completed his double by sealing the rout in the 89th minute, as Bayern recorded the biggest win in the history of men's Club World Cups.
Despite the heavy defeat, Auckland coach Ivan Vicelich - who noted before the match that several of his players had to take time off from their day jobs - said he was proud of his team's effort.
"To be proud of the players is what we're after. It's a dream coming from an amateur level to play in this environment," he said.
"You can't hide on the field. (I'm) really proud, a lot of players put in a good amount and worked really hard."
The 13-time OFC Champions League winners Auckland will face Benfica on Friday, while Bayern meet Argentine giants Boca Juniors on the same day in Group C action.
Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain later beat fellow European heavyweights Atletico Madrid 4-0 at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena.
PSG landed the first blow when Fabian Ruiz fired home from distance in the 19th minute as they showed no signs of rust in their first match since trouncing Inter Milan 5-0 to win their first Champions League title last month.
PSG doubled their advantage just before halftime when an Antoine Griezmann miss led to a counter-attack that ended with Vitinha firing home under sunny skies in Southern California.
The La Liga side appeared to have pulled one back when Julian Alvarez found the net in the 57th minute but it was overturned after a VAR review determined Koke had fouled Desire Doue in the leadup to the strike.
Substitute Senny Mayulu added a third goal for PSG in the 87th minute to end any hopes of an Atletico Madrid comeback, while Lee Kang-in fired home a stoppage-time penalty to round off the scoring.

Club World Cup: Jobe Bellingham nets on first Borussia Dortmund start

Jobe Bellingham scored on his first start for Borussia Dortmund as the Bundesliga giants beat Mamelodi Sundowns 4-3 at the Club World Cup. Bellingham opened his Dortmund account on the stroke of half-time in Cincinnati, with the former Sunderland midfielder's deflected volley providing a 3-1 interval advantage. Lucas Ribeiro gave the Sundowns a shock 11th-minute lead with a brilliant strike. Felix Nmecha capitalised on an error from Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams five minutes later, and Serhou Guirassy nodded Dortmund ahead before Bellingham's special moment. Khuliso Mudau's own goal added to Sundowns' misery and the tie appeared over. But there was late drama from the South Africans as Iqraam Rayners and substitute Lebo Mothiba set up a grandstand finish. Inter Milan kept alive their hopes of making the last 16 with a late 2-1 comeback victory over Urawa Red Diamonds in Seattle. Ryoma Watanabe converted Takuro Kaneko's square pass to give Urawa a shock 11th-minute lead. Lautaro Martinez headed against the Urawa crossbar in the first half, but the Champions League finalists struggled to break down compact Japanese opponents. Urawa held out until 12 minutes from time when Martinez met Nicolo Barella's corner with a brilliant overhead kick. Inter's winner came in the second of four added minutes after the ball bounced around the Urawa box. Valentin Carboni was the calmest man in the penalty area to sidefoot home from eight yards and give Cristian Chivu his first win as Inter manager.

Jobe Bellingham on target as Borussia Dortmund hold off Sundowns in seven-goal Club World Cup thriller

Dortmund were behind after 11 minutes at the TQL Stadium but rallied to win their second game in Group F and move top of the standings with four points, one more than Sundowns. Felix Nmecha, Serhou Guirassy and Jobe Bellingham scored for the Bundesliga club who also profited from an own goal. Lucas Ribeiro had given Sundowns the lead while Iqraam Rayners and Lebo Mothiba scored in the second half as they looked to rally from 4-1 down in a competitive game played in blazing hot conditions with a mid-day kickoff. Ribeiro burst through a static Dortmund defence, picking up the ball on the halfway line and gliding past two opponents to score a shock opener. But the lead last only five minutes before a calamitous error from Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, who played a short pass to Nmecha who had an easy tap-in for the equaliser. Dortmund went ahead after a slick set of one-two passes between Julian Brandt and Guirassy who powered home with his head. Bellingham, in his second appearance for Dortmund, made it 3-1 on the stroke of halftime as Williams parried Brandt's cross straight at him, and he delayed shooting for a split second before wrong-footing the goalkeeper. Rayners struck the woodwork for Sundowns 10 minutes into the second half but on the hour mark Daniel Svensson's cross from the left took a wicked deflection off Sundowns' fullback Khuliso Mudau as Dortmund extended their lead. Two minutes later, the South African side pulled one back as Teboho Mokoena's free kick was floated to Rayners, who struck the foot of the post but the rebound bounced back onto his head and he did not waste the second opportunity. Mothiba struck in the 90th minute as Sundowns stole away possession and the substitute scored from close range but they could not find an equaliser. Fluminense of Brazil, who drew 0-0 with Dortmund in their opening game, and Ulsan HD of South Korea, who lost 1-0 to Sundowns, meet later on Saturday in New Jersey.
