Country emerging as global leader in disaster response: Shah

New Delhi: UnionHome Minister Amit Shah on Monday said that the disaster response forces have worked hard over the past 10 years to take the country on the verge of becoming a global leader in crisis management.
Addressing the Relief Commissioners and Disaster Response Forces Conference, HM Shah said, 'In the last 10 years, we have achieved a lot in four areas of capacity, speed, efficiency and accuracy.' 'Speed is of essence in any operation related to disaster management. Timely response to a disaster and saving lives is the most important objective for which we have made big strides through training of workforce and introduction of technology and advance warning system for the community,' he said.
'Though the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) works under my ministry, I can confidently say that it has built a strong image, earned recognition, and gained respect across the country,' said HM Shah.
The NDRF has also worked hard to train jawans of the State Disaster Relief Force (SDRF), he said.
He praised National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), NDRF and Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) for bringing India closer to becoming a global leader in disaster management.
HM Shah said till a decade ago disaster management was limited to offering relief after a calamity, however, over the decade India's disaster management is moving forward with a 'Zero Casualty Approach' which has even surprised the global community.
The Union Minister stressed on research to improve advance warning systems for disaster response and mitigation.
'We have succeeded in redefining our disaster response from reactive to pro-active over the decade,' said HM Shah, adding that 'Bhagidhari' has been the foundation of improving the response system.
'Starting from the Central government to State governments and to local bodies, a unified approach has been adopted for disaster response. Now, under Prime Minister Narendra Modi we are even involving the community in the effort,' he said. HM Shah said in the coming decade each of the youth in the country will be equipped with the capability to join disaster response.
Highlighting the multi-dimensional approach of the government, HM Shah said the budgetary allocation for disaster response forces has also been increased three-fold over the past decade.
'In the case of NDRF, the allocation was Rs 28,000 crore between 2004 and 2014 but during 2014 and 2024 it was raised to Rs 84,000 crore,' he said.
For the SDRF, the budget between 2004 and 2014 was Rs 38,000 crore but between 2014 and 2024 it was increased to Rs 1.44 lakh crore, he said.
Coalition for CDRI, an international organisation launched by PM Modi, is a global partnership of 49 members dedicated to climate and disaster-resilient infrastructure solutions.
It is a partnership of national governments, UN agencies and programmes, multilateral development banks and financing mechanisms, the private sector, and academia. CDRI advances the cause of climate and disaster resilient infrastructure (DRI).

'A historic day' Virtually inaugurating the temporary campus of the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU) and the I-Hub Raipur, both situated in Nava Raipur, Mr. Shah called the occasion a historic day in the journey to modernise and scientifically strengthen the criminal justice system of Chhattisgarh. Alongside the temporary campus of NFSU, the ground-breaking ceremony for the permanent campus and the foundation of a Central Forensic Science Laboratory were also initiated. These institutions are being developed at a total cost of ₹268 crore. Academic sessions at the temporary campus will commence from 2025–26, offering undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in Forensic Science, Cybersecurity, Psychology, Digital Forensics, and various professional diploma courses. Approximately 180 students are expected to be enrolled in the first batch. Later in the evening, Mr. Shah chaired a review meeting on Naxalism in Raipur with the top police and administrative officials of Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, and Odisha.

Center to develop nine roads leading to Nashik ahead of Kumbh mela

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday said that all roads connecting Nashik will be developed and upgraded in view of the Simhastha Kumbh Mela in Nashik. A total of nine roads will be developed by the central government ahead of the religious meet in 2027 and as per the preliminary estimate, the work is likely to cost a further Rs 4000 crore. A high-level meeting regarding the highway connecting Nashik was held on Sunday in the presence of Union Road Development Minister Nitin Gadkari at Nagpur. Gadkari extended in-principle approval to the construction of necessary roads and facilities required for the upcoming Kumbh Mela to be held in Nashik as a huge crowd of devotees is expected to arrive, leading to a strain on the traffic system. It was decided that a Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared soon and funds will be made available for this. The routes to be developed include, Ghoti – Pahine – Trimbakeshwar – Jawhar Phata; Dwarka Circle – Sinnar IC 21 (Samruddhi Expressway) Nandur Shingote – Kolhar; Nashik to Kasara; Savli Vihir (IC 20 Samruddhi Expressway) Shirdi – Shani Shingnapur Phata (Rahuri Khurd); Nashik to Dhule; Trimbakeshwar – Jawhar – Manor; Shadow Well – Manmad – Malegaon; Ghoti – Sinnar – Vavi – Shirdi; Shani Shingnapur Phata (Rahuri Khurd) – Ahilyanagar (Kharwandi Phata).The meeting approved the Nashik Ring Road. Along with this, it was decided to make the Nashik to Trimbak road six-lane. 'The cost will be calculated post preparation of the DPR. But the central government has assured all possible financial help as well,' said an official from the Maharashtra Public Works Department (PWD). He added, the estimated Rs 4000 crore is for the construction of roads and additional money will be required for the Nashik ring road project. 'Keeping in view the increasing interest of devotees towards Kumbh Mela and the expected crowd, I had requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to provide assistance at the central government level for its successful planning and enabling infrastructure road development. As a result this meeting was held today,' said Fadnavis. There are eight important routes to Nashik from Mumbai, Gujarat, Palghar, Pune, Ahilyanagar, Sambhajinagar, Dhule. All these routes and the internal roads in Nashik city and the district also connect to the national highway. The meeting considered the development of all those roads. CM Fadnavis said that the expanded road network will provide more safe facilities to the devotees as it will handle the huge traffic expected during the Kumbh Mela.

Assam Cabinet clears 900 MW pumped storage project for Hinduja Renewables

Guwahati: Assam cabinet has cleared the allotment of a self-identified PSP site to Hinduja Renewables Energy Private Limited for development of 900 MW off-stream Pumped Storage Project (PSP) in West Karbi Anglong District. With an investment of Rs. 5400 crores, this project will contribute towards achieving the state's target of 2 GW PSP capacity by 2030. The project will provide grid stability by storing excess electricity during low demand and releasing it during peak hours, enhancing energy security and supporting renewable energy integration.
