Panchayat Polls: UP Congress pushes ground-level mobilisation

Panchayat Polls: UP Congress pushes ground-level mobilisation

Hindustan Times6 days ago

The Uttar Pradesh Congress on Sunday directed its district-level leaders to intensify preparations for the upcoming panchayat elections, describing them as a true test of the party's grassroots strength.
'All district-level leaders will play a crucial role in panchayat elections, which are a true test of the party's strength at the grassroots,' Avinash Pande, All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary and UP in-charge, said, during a review meeting held in Lucknow.
The review, which focused on the Braj region, was attended by UP Congress chief Ajay Rai, Congress legislature party leader Aradhna Mishra, and several other senior leaders. Districts under the scanner included Mathura, Agra, Firozabad, Etah, Mainpuri, Kasganj, Aligarh, Hathras, Badaun, Bareilly, Shahjahanpur, Pilibhit, and Farrukhabad.
'All coordinators should spend maximum time in their respective areas as this is significant for building a strong organisational structure in the party,' Ajay Rai said.
State Congress leaders also approved several district-level committees during the review. However, in many districts, committee proposals lacked representation from all communities. District and city presidents have been instructed to rework these lists to include women, Dalits, backwards classes, and minorities.
Referring to party leader Rahul Gandhi's vision, Pande said, 'The organisational structure should reflect the principles of social justice. Every section of society must get a place in the party hierarchy.'
The review of the Braj region comes after the West Zone review began on June 14. During these evaluations, the party identified shortcomings in the representation of diverse communities within the proposed district committees.

Telangana Dy CM Bhatti Vikramarka announces 2 per cent DA hike for power employees

HYDERABAD: Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka on Saturday announced a nearly 2% increase in Dearness Allowance (DA) for Power department employees. He said the state government, giving priority to employee welfare, has decided to enhance the DA by 1.944% for power employees and pensioners. The revised DA will benefit 71,417 employees and pensioners across the state. The DA has been raised from 14.074% to 16.018%, with retrospective effect from January this year. The revision will impose an additional monthly burden of Rs 11.193 crore on power utilities. Addressing employees of the power department at Praja Bhavan, the deputy chief minister said the revised DA would also apply to artisans, along with power employees and pensioners. 'Telangana should emerge as a guiding force in the power sector for the entire country. The state government is moving ahead with a well-structured strategy to achieve this. Electricity has become as essential to industrial production in today's competitive world as air is to life,' he said. Peak power demand Referring to demand trends, Vikramarka pointed out that in March 2023, when the BRS was in power, the peak power demand stood at 15,000 MW. 'After the Congress assumed office in December 2023, the demand rose to 17,162 MW by March 2025, an increase of over 2,000 MW. Despite this rise, the government and power employees had ensured uninterrupted and quality power supply,' he said. Vikramarka said the state anticipates a further steep rise in demand. Citing a report by a central agency, he stated that Telangana's peak power demand is projected to reach 26,299 MW by 2029–30 and 33,773 MW by 2034–35. The deputy chief minister added that the government was planning ahead to boost power generation capacity to meet these future requirements. He said that following the formation of the Congress government, the Green Energy Policy-2025 had been introduced, targeting the production of 20,000 MW of green power by 2029-30. He urged the power sector workforce to be prepared to face future challenges and reiterated that the government and employees together formed an ideal working partnership.

Demand Bharat Ratna for Jyotirao Phule: V Hanumantha Rao to CM Revanth Reddy

HYDERABAD: Veteran Congress leader V Hanumantha Rao on Saturday requested Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy to recommend India's highest civilian honour — Bharat Ratna — for prominent social reformer, thinker and writer Mahatma Jyotirao Phule. He also urged the government to give tax exemption to Phule, the biopic of the 19th century reformer. In a letter addressed to the CM, Hanumantha Rao noted that Phule encouraged women's education and fought against discrimination and suppression of downtrodden communities. He said that Phule fought against the practice of tonsuring the heads of widows. 'You are well aware that a similar concept (social justice) is being adopted by our beloved leader, Rahul Gandhi Ji, who has taken up Bharat Jodo Yatra wherein he stressed the need for Kitni Hissidari Utne Bhagidari. Rahul, while following the ideologies of Phule, is striving to bring about this major change in present-day society,' he said.

Puducherry government takes people for a ride by hiking taxes, duties through backdoor: V. Narayanasamy

Former Puducherry Chief Minister V. Narayanasamy, on Sunday (June 22, 2025) charged Chief Minister N. Rangasamy of taking people for a ride by hiking taxes and other duties through the backdoor. Speaking to reporters, he said the Chief Minister and his Cabinet colleagues had been making tall claims that the government had presented a tax-free budget for the current fiscal. But in reality, the taxes have been hiked exorbitantly. The government has hiked bus fare, fuel charges, power tariff and increased the excise duty by more than 100% while the Guideline Land Register (GLR) value has also been hiked affecting all sections of people, he said. Mr. Narayanasamy said the ruling AINRC-BJP coalition government had failed to fulfill its promises made to the people during the elections. Election promises such as reopening of ration shops, waiver of farm loans, and revival of the lone cooperative sugar mill and textile mills are not fulfilled. Over 10,000 workers attached to government undertakings including PASIC and PAPSCO have been left in the lurch due to closure and no steps have been taken to reopen them, he said. Alleging that the government was steeped in corruption, Mr. Narayanasamy said that there was hardly any department where there were no corrupt practices, officials were seeking bribes. 'We [Congress] have made serious corruption charges against ruling party members and Ministers during the last four years of AINRC- BJP government. There is no fear of law,' he said. In the latest incident, the former Chief Minister said that R. Sriganth, Assistant on deputation as Sub-Registrar (Rural) in the Registration Department was seen taking a bribe in a toilet in the Registration Department. Though the officer was transferred about two months ago, he was not relieved and was allowed to continue in the Registration Department. This incident has validated the corruption charges levelled by the Congress party against the ruling AINRC-BJP government in Puducherry. The Congress has been collecting details of corruption and other malpractices in the government departments. All this will be compiled in the form of a petition and the party would submit a detailed report on the scenario in Puducherry during a meeting with the President Droupadi Murmu in August, he said.
