NSO to launch household income survey from Feb 2026: Statistics minister

The survey aims to estimate average household income across India and may help provide a clearer picture of poverty, inequality and income disparity across rural and urban areas

In an ambitious move, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) is set to launch the Household Income Survey (HIS) starting February next year. The survey will be used to calculate the average income of rural and urban households, Statistics Minister Rao Inderjit Singh told Business Standard.
'Household Income Survey has also been planned for launching by the ministry from February 2026 for the purpose of estimating average income of rural and urban households,' said Singh.
The upcoming survey by the National Statistics Office (NSO) marks renewed efforts at collecting data on household income in India.

"The book will become a guiding light to build Viksit Bharat with progressive thoughts while preserving our glorious heritage. President Droupadi Murmu knows the importance of diversity in our country and recognises the pain of the deprived. This book proclaims the spirit of equality," Singh said. The defence minister remarked that the book brings together President Murmu's insights and ideas across a wide range of subjects, from civilisation and culture to religion, science, art, literature, education, health, and the journey from past to future. Singh asserted on President Murmu being the best example of women-led development in India. On Saturday, Singh had said that Operation Sindoor was not over yet, and that India was ready to take 'all kinds of action against terrorism' while addressing troops of the Army's Udhampur-based Northern Command on the 11th International Yoga Day. Singh had warned that the military action in Pakistan, a retaliation for the Pahalgam attack, was a clear message that it would face the consequences for supporting terror activities against India.

NSO starts domestic tourism expenditure and national household travel surveys in hubballi

Hubballi: The National Statistical Office (NSO), regional office Hubli, working under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, GOI, started two new surveys, namely, the Domestic Tourism Expenditure Survey (DTES) and the National Household Travel Survey (NHTS). These were held at the National Statistical Office in Hubballi on Monday. Inaugurating the session, Hareeswaarn K, director, NSO, Hubballi region, spoke on the importance of understanding the concepts and definitions of the survey uniformly by all field staff. This is a major factor that decides the success of the survey and depends largely on the quality of data. The National Statistical Office will conduct the first dedicated Domestic Tourism Expenditure and National Household Travel Survey (NSTS) in India from July 2025 to June 2026. Based on the requirements of the ministry of railway, the survey aims to collect information on where, when, and why people travel, which is critical for making informed decisions on infrastructure projects and public transportation systems. The survey will provide critical data for understanding and improving the transportation system, aiding in policy developments and infrastructure planning.
