‘I want to stay': John Stones moves to shut down Manchester City exit talk

Yahoo4 hours ago

John Stones has moved to shut down speculation about his future by stating he wants to remain at Manchester City, though serial injuries caused 'dark days' that made him consider whether to play on.
The 31-year-old endured another injury-plagued season in 2024-25, managing only 1,134 minutes in all competitions and six Premier League starts. The defender, who signed in summer 2016, has never made more than the 23 league starts for City he made in his opening campaign.

Before facing Al Ain in Sunday's second Club World Cup group game, Pep Guardiola again said he does not want a 'long' squad, meaning he wants to reduce its number. This has caused speculation that due to the checkered injury record Stones, who is out of contract next summer, could leave.
But he said: 'I'm here, I want to stay here, I love it. I'm here to help the team, and I don't know if what's been said or speculated, but I hope that kind of shuts it down.'
Stones admitted considering if he wanted to continue playing. 'Yeah, there's been points where you think, you've been giving all this effort, you dedicate all your life, especially how I approach or go about my life, and football, I give everything, on and off the pitch to be here or be ready to play games and [there] are the dark days,' he said. 'Everyone's been through them and think: 'why is this happening?'

'You wish it would have gone a different path. All of us have been through different upbringings and challenges through life and what did we do within those situations, was it fight or was it give up? I was a fighter from a young age, in difficult moments, you have to look at the bigger picture and realise what are your morals, what you believe in, and fight to make it worthwhile.'
Stones is not yet match-fit to face Al Ain at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium. 'I feel great and I'm excited to get going,' he said. 'It's difficult when you're injured, you almost work longer and more, so from that aspect I know the guys mentally and physically have had such a long season, [but] I suppose mentally for me it's been difficult dealing with the injuries and the process.
'Now I've put that behind me and will use this as a mini-introduction back before the new season and another trophy for us to hopefully win and get some game-time.'
Stones is unsure why there have been so many physical set-backs. 'I don't know what the reason is, and we've sat with the medical staff, sports science, to try and figure out why,' he said. 'Some things can't be explained. Which is even more testing mentally when there's not really an answer.

'I've been unlucky with some of the injuries that I've had, they were very rare last season, after speaking to specialists. Sometimes I think, why has it happened to me? But I've got to deal with that and move forward and try to adapt with how my body's adapting.
'I've been back in training a few weeks now, and that's been going great, trying to do extra running if I need to, if I need to try and get those levels up. Just those little, really small details have made such a big difference.'
If City win they qualify for the last 16.

Brazil Star Full Of Praise For Inter Milan Teammate After Late Heroics Vs Urawa Red Diamonds: ‘He Deserves His Goal'

Brazil Star Full Of Praise For Inter Milan Teammate After Late Heroics Vs Urawa Red Diamonds: 'He Deserves His Goal' Inter Milan wingback Carlos Augusto feels that teammate Valentin Carboni 'deserved his goal' against Urawa Red Diamonds. The Brazilian spoke to Italian broadcaster DAZN, via FCInterNews, after the 2-1 victory. Carboni scored a dramatic stoppage time goal to deliver the three points to the Nerazzurri. Advertisement Valentin Carboni was not the likeliest hero for Inter Milan against Urawa Red Diamonds. The Argentine is only just coming back from an ACL tear that has kept him out since October. But it was Carboni who Inter coach Cristian Chivu turned to late in the Nerazzurri's Club World Cup match against Urawa Red Diamonds. When Chivu threw the 20-year-old on off the bench, Inter were trailing 0-1 in the Club World Cup group stage clash. However, Lautaro Martinez was able to find the equalizer for Inter. From then on, it looked as though the Nerazzurri would be settling for a point. However, it was Carboni who found himself with the ball at his feet inside the penalty area in stoppage time. And the Argentine showed great technique and composure to tuck the ball into the far corner. 'And He also worked alone.' 'He deserved his goal. And he helped us to get this win.' Then, Augusto noted that 'it's normal to be tired both physically and mentally after such a long season.' 'Now we have to start preparing for the match against River Plate. They're a South American team, and they're a very strong side.' And Augusto said that Inter 'knew [Urawa Reds] are an organized team with a lot of discipline.' 'After their goal they shut up shop well.' 'We had the courage and desire to win the match,' Augusto added. 'We could have done more. But the important thing was the win.'

Italy Star ‘Worst On The Pitch' For Inter Milan Vs Urawa Red Diamonds – Two Other Players Not Far Behind

Italy Star 'Worst On The Pitch' For Inter Milan Vs Urawa Red Diamonds – Two Other Players Not Far Behind Federico Dimarco was 'the worst player on the pitch' for Inter Milan against Urawa Red Diamonds. Today's print edition of Rome-based newspaper Corriere dello Sport, via FCInterNews, argue that the 27-year-old was off the pace and offered little. Advertisement Inter Milan did get the win that they were after against Urawa Red Diamonds. The Nerazzurri won in the last gasps of the match, with Valentin Carboni scoring the decisive goal in stoppage time. That gives Inter a big foothold heading into their final group stage match. For much of the first half, the Nerazzurri were held at arm's length by Urawa Red Diamonds. Particularly after the Japanese side went ahead early on, Inter dominated the ball but struggled to turn it into any particularly dangerous chances. (Photo by) Italian international Federico Dimarco was unsurprisingly in the Inter starting eleven against Urawa Reds. Advertisement The 27-year-old had come into the lineup after being a substitute against Monterrey. However, Dimarco showed little of why he is a key player for Inter. There were no particularly dangerous crosses or deliveries from set pieces from the Italian international. Then, defensively Dimarco was partly culpable for the breakdown on Inter's right side that allowed Urawa to score their opening goal.

Tom Aspinall's First Words in Reaction to Jon Jones' Announcement

Tom Aspinall's First Words in Reaction to Jon Jones' Announcement originally appeared on Athlon Sports. UFC heavyweight Tom Aspinall didn't need to fight Jon Jones to get the belt he was after. Advertisement Following UFC Baku on Saturday, June 21, Dana White confirmed that Jones had officially retired, making Aspinall the new undisputed UFC heavyweight champion amid a rather confusing night in Europe. The announcement brings closure to one of the most prolonged storylines in the division, even though it has featured no action inside the Octagon. 'Jon Jones called us last night and retired,' White said. 'Jon Jones is officially retired, and Tom Aspinall is the heavyweight champion of the UFC.' Aspinall, who had held the interim title since 2023, shared his response in a short message posted to Instagram while taking a subtle shot at Jones for delaying things so much before ultimately hanging up his gloves. 'For you fans,' Aspinall wrote. 'It's time to get this heavyweight division going. An active undisputed champion.' Advertisement Aspinall's post marks the end of a two-year standoff between Aspinall and Jones. Jones had publicly dismissed the idea of a unification bout multiple times, despite Aspinall compiling an 8–1 UFC record at heavyweight and defending the interim belt against Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304. A Jones-Aspinall clash never materialized, and with Jones' retirement now confirmed, Aspinall assumes full control of the division he's long sought to conquer. Tom Aspinall prior to a UFC fight at O2 Haljestam-Imagn Images Aspinall has stayed mostly quiet during the wait, hinting at potential announcements but never getting quite there, opting to let the belt and his résumé speak and putting the ball on Jones' court. Advertisement Now, contenders like Jailton Almeida, Ciryl Gane, and Alex Pereira are circling the new champion and are expected to enter conversations with the UFC for the first title defense in Aspinall's reign as the heavyweight champion, even if he never quite won the belt proper.
