Teacher found dead in home uncontactable since Sept, says exco

PETALING JAYA : Lo Kwan Fong, the 39-year-old teacher whose decomposed body was found in her home in Iskandar Puteri, Johor, last Thursday, had been uncontactable since September, said state executive councillor Aznan Tamin.
The state education and information committee chairman said the last time Lo had contacted her school was on Sept 26, 2024.
'The teacher could not be contacted via phone calls, SMS, WhatsApp, Messenger or Telegram.
'The school principal also issued show-cause letters for her absence from duty on Nov 21 and Dec 19 last year.
'The teacher's phone number continued to be unreachable on March 12, causing the school to resort to various other ways to track her,' Bernama quoted him as saying.
Yesterday, Iskandar Puteri police chief M Kumarasan said Lo, a teacher at a school in Taman Tunku Aminah, was found dead after her neighbours alerted police to a foul smell coming from the house in Bandar Selesa Jaya last Thursday.
He said Lo was believed to have died a month ago, and that the post-mortem could not determine the cause of death due to the advanced state of decomposition.
Aznan said the school attempted to track Lo via letters of inquiry to government agencies such as the road transport department, prisons department, immigration department and national registration department.
On Dec 29, her neighbour told the school the teacher had not returned home for a long time, going by the many letters and mail stuffed into the windows and door of her house, while her car was parked on the roadside nearby.
'The deceased was an only child and lived alone after her parents died,' he said, adding that the teacher was believed to have grappled with personal problems like depression.
Aznan said her body was still at Sultanah Aminah Hospital here as no next of kin had come forward to claim it.

JPJ finalising investigation papers for bus operator responsible for deadly UPSI accident
BUTTERWORTH, June 20 — The Road Transport Department (JPJ) is finalising the investigation papers for action to be taken in court against the bus company operator involved in the accident that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students Its director-general, Datuk Aedy Fadly Ramli said the investigation is now in the final stages before being handed over to the Deputy Public Prosecutor to decide on the charge recommendation. 'He (the bus operator) had a heart attack, it has nothing to do with the JPJ and I have not received any reports saying otherwise. We will still take action; if he goes to the hospital we will wait,' he added. In the incident on June 9, 15 UPSI students died when the bus they were in overturned in an accident at KM53 of the East-West Highway (JRTB), near Tasik Banding, Gerik. The bus carrying 42 university students was travelling from Jertih, Terengganu to the university's main campus in Tanjung Malim, Perak when it collided with a Perodua Alza before overturning. — Bernama

SHAH ALAM, June 20 — A man was found dead inside a vehicle, believed to have been shot, in an incident outside a motorcycle shop in Meru, Klang, this afternoon. According to Bernama, Klang North district police chief ACP S Vijaya Rao said the authorities were alerted to the incident at 3.37pm, and when they arrived at the scene, they found the body of a 46-year-old local man in the driver's seat. PETALING JAYA : A Masterchef Malaysia finalist and her former husband have been sentenced to 34 years in jail after they were found guilty by the Kota Kinabalu High Court of killing their domestic worker in 2021. Etiqah Siti Noorashikeen Sulang's former husband, Ambree Yunos, was also sentenced to 12 strokes of the rotan while she was exempted because of her gender, Sabah Media reported. Ambree, a contractor, and Etiqah were charged with killing Nur Afiyah Daeng Damin, 28, at their condominium unit in Penampang between Dec 8 and Dec 11, 2021. They were charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which provides for the death penalty, or 30 to 40 years' jail, and no fewer than 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction. Lim said the defence had failed to raise reasonable doubt against the prosecution's case. He said the prosecution had proven three key elements – that the victim died from her injuries, that the injuries were caused by the two accused with intent, and that the pair had acted with a common intention. During sentencing, deputy public prosecutor Dacia Jane Romanus sought the death sentence, saying the case had shocked both Sabah and the nation, and that it warranted the heaviest penalty possible. Dacia said the deceased was a young woman who had left her hometown for honest work amid the pandemic, but ended up losing her life at her workplace. She said the victim suffered daily and was denied her basic human rights. Ambree and Etiqah, who were represented by lawyers Ram Singh and Rakhbir Singh, were previously out on bail.
