Covid Nimbus variant cases double in one month as infections hit highest level

Daily Mirror2 days ago

A new strain of coronavirus is on the rise across the UK - with eight per cent of Covid tests analysed showing positive for the new 'Nimbus' variant. The highly contagious Nimbus is now Britain's most dominant strain with official UKHSA data suggesting infections have doubled in the space of just one month.
The variant has been flagged in the UK, US and Australia and is linked to spikes in cases in India, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Thailand. Nimbus, known scientifically as N.B.1.8.1, is thought to be the most contagious variant of the virus yet with experts warning it could drive a wave of new cases this summer.
In its weekly report UKHSA also said there had also been a slight increase in hospital admissions for Covid to just over 1.5 admissions per 100,000 people. It follows warnings from British scientists earlier this month that Nimbus could lead to a surge in Covid cases.
They warned that many people's immunity to the virus, built up from previous infections and older jabs, has likely faded meaning they could be at higher risk of falling ill.
Other data collected by the agency shows the total number of tests coming back positive for any type of Covid has increased to 6.8 per cent as of June 15, the latest available data. This is up from 5.6 per cent last month and represents the highest figure recorded so far this year.
'The NB.1.8.1 variant, also referred to as Nimbus, is a new strain of the Covid-19 virus that has emerged due to mutations in its genetic material,' says Dr Naveed Asif, GP at The London General Practice.
'Variants like this pop up when the virus mutates, which is normal for viruses, especially ones that spread widely,' explains Tang. 'NB.1.8.1 was first picked up in early 2025 and has since been detected in several countries, including the UK, China and US. It's got some new mutations that scientists are keeping a close eye on.'

Doctor recommends surprising drink instead of water in a heatwave — and it's not tea

A heatwave has swept across the UK, with temperatures reaching 27°C in certain parts of the country yesterday and forecasts predicting they'll hit the mid-30s by the weekend. It's good news for anyone going to Glastonbury or Royal Ascot over the coming week, but the spell of warmer weather also comes with warnings. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued yellow heat health alerts for Midlands and southern England which remain in effect this morning and may continue on into the week. The government body claimed vulnerable groups may be at risk due to the heat, while an 'increased potential for indoor environments to become very warm' could lead to strain on healthcare services throughout the region. Alongside warnings to stay out of the midday sun and wear sunscreen, Brits are advised to drink plenty of fluids in order to avoid dehydration. Before you reach for your water bottle, though, a doctor has claimed there's a better option when managing a heatwave: milk. It's not the usual go-to come summer; we all remember Anchorman's Ron Burgundy proclaiming 'milk was a bad choice' in the sweltering sunshine, right?. However, Dr Natasha Fernando, medical director at Medichecks, says it 'may be more hydrating than water'. 'A lot of buildings in the UK aren't well equipped to deal with extreme heat, so it's more important than ever to look after your hydration levels throughout periods of hot weather,' she says. 'However, you don't have to stick to water alone to boost hydration levels.' Symptoms of dehydration Symptoms of dehydration in adults and children include: feeling thirsty dark yellow, strong-smelling pee peeing less often than usual feeling dizzy or lightheaded feeling tired a dry mouth, lips and tongue sunken eyes If you have symptoms of dehydration drink plenty of fluids (in small sips if you find it hard to drink due to sickness). Additionally, you can get oral rehydration solutions through a pharmacist. Call 111 urgently if you or your child have any of these symptoms of severe dehydration: feeling unusually tired or drowsy confusion or disorientation feeling dizzy when standing up and it not going away breathing quickly or a fast heart rate no tears when crying (specifically applicable to babies and children) a soft spot on the head than sinks inward, known as sunken fontanelle (specifically applicable to babies and children) Via NHS. Dr Natasha explains that due to the sugar, protein, and fat content of milk, which slows the rate at which fluid empties from the stomach, a glass of the white stuff helps you to stay hydrated over longer periods. 'Milk also contains sodium,' she adds, 'which allows your body to hold onto water for longer, aiding hydration levels.' It's not just cow's milk either: vegan or lactose-intolerant folks can also benefit with a hit of a plant based alternative, and Dr Natasha highlights that 'soya milk also contains electrolytes, which aid re-hydration further.' Alongside milk, she recommends watermelons, coconut water, cucumbers or cucumber juice, and fresh fruit juices diluted with water to help stay cool. You've probably heard that a hot drink on a warm day is better too, and while it's a classic older relative refrain, there is some truth to it. It may not be particularly refreshing, but a steaming cup of tea cools you down by prompting your body to sweat. 'The hot drink somehow has an effect on your systemic cooling mechanisms, which exceeds its actual effect in terms of heating your body,' Peter McNaughton, a neuroscientist at the University of Cambridge told NPR. 'That's probably why chilli peppers are so popular in hot countries because they cause sweating and activate a whole raft of mechanisms which lower the temperature.' But there is a caveat: your sweat needs to be able to evaporate on your skin. If the air is too humid or you're wearing a lot of clothing, for example, you'll just end up feeling slightly warmer than before you popped the kettle on. So rather than a milky cuppa, you're probably better off just sticking with the milk. This article was originally published on July 18, 2024. Do you have a story to share? Painful symptom of latest Covid variant identified

The NB.1.8.1, or "Nimbus," Covid variant is now nearly the most prevalent omicron lineage tracked by the CDC. A notable symptom associated with Nimbus is an incredibly painful "razor blade throat," though other symptoms are typical of Covid infection. Experts state that despite its rapid spread, the Nimbus variant does not appear to be more severe than previous strains. The variant's quick transmissibility is attributed to genetic mutations that allow it to bind easily to human cells. The World Health Organization has designated Nimbus as a "variant under monitoring" and considers the global public health risk to be low, with current vaccines expected to remain effective.

Newest Covid variant causing ‘razor blade throat.' What to know

A new Covid variant spreading around the U.S. may come with an incredibly unfortunate symptom now commonly referred to as 'razor blade throat.' NB.1.8.1, which is also known as or 'Nimbus,' is now nearly the most prevalent omicron lineage tracked by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As the name implies, infection may lead to an incredibly painful sore throat, according to experts. Other symptoms, though, are more typical of a Covid infection, including fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath, and the loss of taste or smell. 'A 'razor blade throat' is a very descriptive term describing severe sore throat pain — as if their throat is covered with razor blades — (like) with various viral infections,' Dr. Aaron Glatt, chair of the department of medicine and chief of infectious diseases at Mount Sinai South Nassau in New York, told 'While not specific to Covid-19, this expression has been used to describe sore throat symptoms in some patients with the most recent Covid-19 variant,' he said. But although the new omicron variant may result in a painful infection, experts say that it does not appear to be more severe than others. 'Every time you get a new strain, it always is a little bit more transmissible than what came before it,' Dr. Peter Chin-Hong, a UCSF infectious disease specialist, told SFGATE. 'Just like a pop song is more catchy when it rises to the top of the charts. And this particular one, Nimbus, is not just proportionally higher right now in California, the speed at which it's rising in the charts is also high … but it's not more severe.' Just how virulent it is remains a topic of discussion. 'What sets NB.1.8.1 apart is how quickly it spreads,' explains Dr. Magdalena Sobieszczyk, chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center, said in a statement. 'It has a genetic advantage: mutations that make it easy for it to bind to receptors on human cells. The mutations could allow NB.1.8.1 to spread faster and, therefore, infect more people.' The World Health Organization has designated Nimbus as a 'variant under monitoring,' and considers the public health risk low globally. Current vaccines are expected to remain effective. But the longevity of the availability of Covid vaccines in the U.S. remains murky. Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., said last month that shots are no longer recommended for healthy children and pregnant women. He has also removed members of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's vaccine advisory panel and replaced them with people who have been skeptical of Covid vaccines and mandates.
