Lawson surprised but not deterred by Red Bull demotion

Reuters03-04-2025

SUZUKA, Japan, April 3 (Reuters) - Liam Lawson said he was surprised at being demoted by the Red Bull team after only two races of the new season but remained determined to make his mark in Formula One with the junior Racing Bulls team.
The 23-year-old New Zealander was appointed world champion Max Verstappen's teammate for this season with only 11 races as a stand-in under his belt but was last week shunted back to the Racing Bulls team and replaced by Yuki Tsunoda.
Lawson, who qualified 18th and failed to finish in Australia before qualifying last for the sprint and race in China, said he had no idea the axe would fall so soon and left Shanghai ready to prepare for the third round of the season in Japan.
"I had a phone call, basically saying that this was what was going to happen," he told reporters at Suzuka on Thursday.
"It was something I wasn't expecting so early. It's something that obviously is not my decision and for me, it's about making the most of obviously this opportunity now and obviously still being Formula One, I still have that."
Lawson had never raced in Melbourne or Shanghai and it was clearly a matter of regret that he was unable to show what he could do in the Red Bull at Suzuka, which he knows well from his time in Japan's Super Formula championship.
"That was something I was obviously looking forward to from the start, to be honest, to go to a track that I've been to before," he added.
"Just have a proper sort of preparation, and I now have that. So it's exciting to be here at a track that's one of my favourite tracks to drive on. So yeah, I'm very excited."
Lawson clearly has the sympathy of Verstappen, who told reporters "it was not a mistake" that he had liked a social media posts criticising the swap decision as "panicky".
"My reaction was shared with the team. But in general, you know about, not only the swap, I think about everything," the Dutchman said on Thursday.
"Sometimes it's not necessary to always share and say everything in public."
Lawson said the prospect of returning one day to Red Bull was "part of the conversation" when he got the news.
"I guess, in a way, that's great, but obviously I was already there starting the season," he said.
"So look, whatever happens down the line is more or less how do I control what I control and that's the driving stuff. So where the future goes, honestly, at this point I'm not really thinking about too much."
The New Zealander was also reassured by how quickly things can change in Formula One.
"If I look back a year ago, I had no seat, I was here a year ago, watching and wishing I was racing," he said.

Celtic misfit bids emotional farewell as reported transfer target Hayato Inamura opens scoring account with a belter

Defender Gustaf Lagerbielke has spent the season in the Eredivisie with FC Twente. Celtic misfit Gustaf Lagerbielke has penned an emotional FC Twente tribute after his loan with the Eredivisie side expired. The Swedish defender headed to the Netherlands on a season-long loan last summer and made 32 appearances in all competitions as Twente narrowly missed out on a place in Europe with a play-off defeat to AZ Alkmaar over two legs. ‌ There was some talk in the Netherlands that Twente were keen to sign the centre back on a permanent deal but that appears to have gone cold due to Lagerbielke - who the Hoops signed for around £3million from Swedish outfit Elfsborg back in 2023 - still having three years left on his contract at Celtic. ‌ Twente are however hoping to bring back fellow defender Robin Propper from city rivals Rangers after just one season in Glasgow. The Dutchman will however hold talks with new Ibrox boss Russell Martin to discuss his future next week. Ahead of his return to Lennoxtown for pre-season next month, Lagerbielke has officially said his goodbyes at Twente. His post on Instagram read: "From the first day I arrived in Enschede, I felt at home. "Every day I drove to the training field in Hengelo, I felt excitement. Every day I was with the team and the staff, I felt joy. "Every day I put on the Twente shirt, I felt proud. Every day I played for your supporters, I felt honoured. "And today I feel grateful. Grateful for all of you and for letting me be part of your family. Thank you." Elsewhere, reported Celtic target Hayato Inamura opened his account for J-League side Albirex Niigata in emphatic style. ‌ The left-sided defender only joined Albi last summer but has made 14 league appearances in Japan's top tier, with his side currently in the midst of a relegation battle. And while Albirex were on the end of another defeat at the hands of Avispa Fukuoka on Saturday, the 23-year-old did register his first goal for the club. ‌ Inamura showed his class to lash home an effort from inside the area and give his team a 1-0 lead after hosts Avispa had failed to clear a corner. However, a quickfire double from their opponents minutes later saw the scoreline reserved and while Albirex levelled things up again, Yuji Kitajima's goal on the stroke of the half-time whistle turned out to be the winner. A newly released video shows the heartstopping moment she entered the record books as the first Scots woman to surf at Nazare. Robyn said: 'That was amazing.' The entire operation was a family affair with dad Marti eagerly watching on. Advertisement Before they headed out the protective father told Ben: "You look after her, right." On his Insta Ben, 20, said: 'I had a really good winter season this year but I think my highlight was taking my sister Robyn for her first session at Nazare. 'We had a great team of people. She was a natural.' Robyn and her brother were taught to surf by their dad on the Isle of Tiree, Argyll. Advertisement Ben has gone on to become a champion and travels the world with the Red Bull team. He's inspired his sister to get involved and she headed out to Portugal to take on the beautiful but deadly waves. I tried Scotland's only inland surf resort - I struggled to stand up but it was an amazing experience They waited days for the conditions to be right and she scored a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Dad Marti, 52, said: 'I was just buzzing for her. She was grinning from ear to ear. Advertisement 'As the days passed I think she put a fair bit of pressure on herself and was maybe getting a bit of cold feet. 'But her brother built her confidence up and it was just amazing to see her out there.' Marti told how his kids have become names in the surfing world despite growing up on a Scots island with no surf community. He said: 'It's remarkable because there is not much of a background of surfing here. Advertisement 'They're a bit of an anomaly because usually you need a big surfing team around you. 'But they've made it through pure, natural talent. They are absolutely smashing it.' Robyn is set to compete for Scotland in July at the European Surfing Championships. While Ben is currently in Indonesia and is expected to have a bright future in the sport. Advertisement But for Marti every competition is nerve-wracking. He said: 'I am buzzing for them. But it's pretty dangerous and the consequences can be severe if something goes wrong. 'You rely on the people around you to keep you safe and get you out of trouble. Thankfully Ben has got a great team around him.'

Real reason Leicester City are continuing to wait to sack Ruud van Nistelrooy

Leicester have kept Ruud van Nistelrooy as their manager for weeks despite their Premier League relegation with the Dutchman poised to finally get his marching orders Leicester have decided to sack Ruud van Nistelrooy but have kept the Dutchman in his post for weeks to avoid a second managerial pay-off on this year's accounts. The Foxes were relegated from the Premier League with the ex- Manchester United star at the helm. They failed to mount much of a challenge with their relegation a long time coming. Van Nistelrooy, who replaced Steve Cooper, could not halt their demise and they returned to the Championship after just one season in the top flight. ‌ Van Nistelrooy's dismissal was expected but, with just seven weeks until the second tier season begins, he remains in a job. However the 48-year-old's time will be up when the Foxes enter their next football accounting period with the delay down to the amount it will cost to get rid of the manager, reports The Sun. ‌ Van Nistelrooy's horrid tenure saw him preside over 17 defeats across his 19 matches. During that period Leicester managed to go nine home Premier League matches in a row without scoring a single goal - losing all of them. Leicester's relegation was confirmed on April 20 but there was no change in the dugout and there has been no communication over Van Nistelrooy's position, but the club's bosses are ready to move him on. READ MORE: Chris Wilder sacked by Sheffield United for second time after promotion failure Leicester are still anxiously waiting on the points penalty they will pick up for past financial offences, which has factored into their timing when it comes to changing their manager. Despite having to tighten the purse strings it is understood that Sean Dyche will take charge. Russell Martin, who led Southampton to promotion from the Championship, was previously linked but he has since taken the Rangers job which left the Leicester hierarchy to look elsewhere. Dyche has previous of enjoying promotion from the second tier. After Leicester's relegation Van Nistelrooy said he "hopes to speak" with the club about his future. "I would like to talk and that's the first thing that needs to happen," he said. "It's been silent and it's something towards the end of the season, get things done with and then I expect to hear something." For the first time in well over a decade Leicester will play a season without Jamie Vardy after the veteran's time with the club came to an end. His contract expired and he scored in his final outing as he and the club go in different directions. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
