Pakistan betrays peace efforts time and again: All-party delegation member SS Ahluwalia
Freetown [Sierra Leone], May 31 (ANI): BJP leader SS Ahluwalia, who is part of the all-party delegation led by Shiv Sena MP Shrikant Shinde, on Saturday reflected on Pakistan's repeated betrayal, citing the Kargil War following the Lahore Declaration during former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's reign.
Speaking at an interaction with the Indian diaspora in Freetown, Sierra Leone, the BJP leader reflected on India's persistent efforts to foster peace with Pakistan, noting that the neighbour only indulges in terrorism against India and not through conventional war, just to weaken the country.
'Former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee used to say that it's the geography that Pakistan is our neighbour and we cannot change it, but we can bring the change and can make Pakistan our friend. That's why during the Lahore Declaration, he travelled to Lahore by bus; but what happened after that - Kargil happened... Time and again, we try to have an agreement and send a message of peace, but Pakistan always betrays us. Pakistan doesn't indulge in a conventional war with us but terrorism, as it wants to weaken us,' Ahluwalia stated.
His remarks, delivered as part of a broader diplomatic mission by an all-party delegation, were echoed by delegation members BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj and BJD MP Sasmit Patra, who emphasised India's firm response to Pakistan-sponsored terrorism through Operation Sindoor, reflecting the country's increasingly assertive stance on the global stage.
Swaraj emphasised India's transformed approach following the Pahalgam terror attack, noting that there was a 'paradigm shift' in how India handles Pakistan's sponsored terrorism.
'This is the new India that doesn't stop, it doesn't bow, and it doesn't forgive. It's the new India that has brought a paradigm shift and said that we will give a befitting reply... We are capable enough to do whatever is needed to do against the Pakistan-sponsored terrorism, but we know that terrorism is not a regional issue but a global issue, and hence, these all-party delegations are travelling to different nations for a diplomatic mission,' Swaraj said.
BJD MP Sasmit Patra also added an emotional narrative, recounting how the terrorists only killed the husbands and left the wives so that they could tell what happened to them there.
Patra noted that following this, Operation Sindoor took place, which targeted nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), killing more than 100 terrorists in the process.
'Sometimes, when we come together in this sense of solidarity... This sense came about on April 22 after Pahalgam... A terrorist comes across, asks the husband his religion, he says his religion and the terrorist shoots him. The wife turns around and asks, 'Kill me as well; why should I live?'... The terrorist turns around and tells that lady, 'I will not kill you. Go and tell this to your government.' She told, and then Operation Sindoor came. We went and struck them inside Pakistan. This is the new India... Believe that this is the new India and you are the face of the new India,' the BJD MP said.
The delegation led by Shinde also includes BJP MP Atul Garg and Manan Kumar Mishra, Indian Union Muslim League's ET Mohammed Basheer and former Ambassador Sujan Chinoy.
The delegation aims to brief international partners on India's response to the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack and its broader fight against cross-border terrorism while engaging with leaders. (ANI)

Punjab: Two arrested on charges of spying for Pakistan
Two persons suspected of spying for Pakistan's intelligence agency were arrested by Amritsar Rural Police, an official said on Sunday. The two individuals accused in the case were identified as Gurpreet Singh and Sahil Masih, Punjab Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said in a social media post. Singh was allegedly in direct contact with Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence operatives. He is 'suspected of sharing sensitive information via pen drives,' Yadav added. The Pakistani intelligence handler involved in the case was identified as Rana Javed, claimed the director general of police. Two mobile phones allegedly used for communication with the intelligence operatives were also seized, he added. These arrests bring the number of persons apprehended in the state on similar charges to 12, The New Indian Express reported. On June 3, the Punjab police had arrested a man from Tarn Taran district for allegedly spying for Pakistan's intelligence agency and leaking sensitive information about Operation Sindoor. Yadav had said then that the man, identified as Gagandeep Singh, posed a 'a threat to national security' after allegedly sharing sensitive details about troop deployments and military locations in lieu of money during India's military strikes on Pakistan.

BJP's double-engine government has proved a double-betrayal for people of Odisha: BJD
BHUBANESWAR: The BJD on Saturday accused the BJP government in the state of betraying the mandate of the people as all the promises made by the saffron party before election have turned to be lies. Addressing a press conference at Shankha Bhawan, three senior leaders - former ministers Sanjay Kumar Das Burma and Snehangini Chhuria, and general secretary Bhrugu Baxipatra alleged that the 'double engine' government has delivered 'double betrayal' to the people in the first year. 'The BJP government is claiming credit for opening four gates of Srimandir and opening of Ratna Bhandar. But why is it shying away from making the Justice Raghubir Das report on the missing key of Ratna Bhandar public? This exposes BJP's double standards,' Das Burma said. Furthermore, the re-inventorisation of the jewellery and other valuables of Ratna Bhandar has still not been completed. The redevelopment work of Srimandir has come to a standstill. The government is even unable to form a new temple management committee, he added. Claiming that Odisha received 18.9 per cent less central grants in 2024-25 compared to the previous fiscal, the former minister said this exposed the hollowness of 'double-engine, double-development' claims. On the Subhadra Yojana, Chhuria said they initially promised to provide Rs 50,000 to every woman in the state within two years. But, the amount is being distributed in two installments of Rs 5,000 each every year which comes down to just Rs 27 per day. This is an insult to women's dignity, she said. Criticising the Odisha Vision Document, Baxipatra said the document released by Modi sets a target of a 9 per cent GDP growth rate for Odisha while other states are aiming at achieving 15 per cent. He said the Naveen Patnaik government had already achieved 16 pc growth rate.

Delhi CM leads yoga on banks of Yamuna, vows clean-up
NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday performed yoga on the banks of the Yamuna River on the occasion of International Yoga Day, taking a swipe at former Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal. She said her act aimed to highlight her administration's commitment to cleaning the river - something she alleged the AAP government failed to do despite years of promises. Besides the CM, her ministerial colleagues, Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena, Mayor, and others participated in yoga sessions at various locations across the national capital. The Delhi government organised programmes at 11 prominent locations in the city to mark the occasion, with ministers, MLAs, and BJP MPs actively participating in the celebrations. Speaking on the occasion, the CM emphasised that Yoga Day should not be seen as a one-day event but rather as a lifestyle choice. 'A healthy citizen is the foundation of a prosperous nation,' she said, reiterating that turning Delhi into the health capital of the country is a shared responsibility. On choosing the Yamuna bank as the venue, she said, 'The purpose was to show people that the cleaning work of the river is underway. Yamuna is a symbol of our faith, but the previous governments ignored it. They did not work to clean it. But in the four months that we have been in power, we have made significant efforts toward its rejuvenation.' Targeting the AAP, Gupta said the previous government chose not to celebrate Yoga Day because of its association with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. 'If they associate yoga with Prime Minister Modi, what can we do? Tomorrow, he might leave his food too if it's linked to the PM. After seeing the BJP government in Delhi, he left the national capital,' she remarked.
