BJP's double-engine government has proved a double-betrayal for people of Odisha: BJD
BHUBANESWAR: The BJD on Saturday accused the BJP government in the state of betraying the mandate of the people as all the promises made by the saffron party before election have turned to be lies.
Addressing a press conference at Shankha Bhawan, three senior leaders - former ministers Sanjay Kumar Das Burma and Snehangini Chhuria, and general secretary Bhrugu Baxipatra alleged that the 'double engine' government has delivered 'double betrayal' to the people in the first year.
'The BJP government is claiming credit for opening four gates of Srimandir and opening of Ratna Bhandar. But why is it shying away from making the Justice Raghubir Das report on the missing key of Ratna Bhandar public? This exposes BJP's double standards,' Das Burma said.
Furthermore, the re-inventorisation of the jewellery and other valuables of Ratna Bhandar has still not been completed. The redevelopment work of Srimandir has come to a standstill. The government is even unable to form a new temple management committee, he added.
Claiming that Odisha received 18.9 per cent less central grants in 2024-25 compared to the previous fiscal, the former minister said this exposed the hollowness of 'double-engine, double-development' claims.
On the Subhadra Yojana, Chhuria said they initially promised to provide Rs 50,000 to every woman in the state within two years. But, the amount is being distributed in two installments of Rs 5,000 each every year which comes down to just Rs 27 per day. This is an insult to women's dignity, she said.
Criticising the Odisha Vision Document, Baxipatra said the document released by Modi sets a target of a 9 per cent GDP growth rate for Odisha while other states are aiming at achieving 15 per cent. He said the Naveen Patnaik government had already achieved 16 pc growth rate.

Memorial to be build in honour of Kharwar brothers: Jaiswal
Patna: State BJP president Dilip Kumar Jaiswal on Sunday said a memorial would be constructed in the state to commemorate contributions of two brothers from the Kharwar tribe, Nilambar and Pitambar, in the freedom struggle. Jaiswal announced this while addressing a convention of Kharwar tribe here. He also said a committee headed by members of Kharwar tribe would be set up to look into their problems, and follow up action would be taken to find solutions to them. Although the Kharwars are mostly found in the Bhagalpur and Munger divisions, their maximum concentration is in the Pirpainty assembly constituency of Bhagalpur district and Manihari in Kathar district. Both the constituencies, earlier, were general seats, but Pirpainty was later made a reserved seat for the scheduled caste people, and Manihari was designated as scheduled tribe (ST) seat. Incidentally, Kharwars were earlier put in the category of SC group, but after a long campaign and social mobilisation done by former CPI MLA of Pirpainty, Ambika Mandal, the Kharwar was notified as an ST group.

BJP questions HIDCO's role in distributing Digha temple prasad
As Digha gets ready to observe the Rath Yatra on June 27, the first since the inauguration of ₹250-crore temple in the coastal town, a fresh controversy has erupted over distribution of prasad (offerings) of the temple. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leadership has alleged that the West Bengal government has allocated funds through State-owned West Bengal Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd (HIDCO). 'The mandate of the HIDCO is to construct buildings for the government. This is why we did not say anything when it constructed the temple.... But how can it spend such an amount to distribute prasad to households?' asked Jagannath Chattopadhyay, general secretary of the State BJP. The BJP leader said that till Friday, various district magistrates and the municipal commissioner of Kolkata have been allocated funds of ₹32 crore for arranging gaja and peda (kinds of sweets). He added that directions have been issued from Nabanna (State Secretariat) that another ₹10 crore will be additionally allocated for the purpose. 'The State government is going to distribute sweets worth ₹42 crore to the people of the State as prasad. And this money is being spent by 'HIDCO',' Mr. Chattopadhyay said. Radharaman Das, vice-president of ISKCON Kolkata, said that door-to-door delivery of the prasad started from June 17 and is likely to continue till the first week of July. Mr. Das, one of the key priests of Digha Jagannath temple, said that so far prasad has been distributed to 14 million people of West Bengal. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, while inaugurating the temple on April 30, had directed that the prasad will be distributed to people of the State. Across the State, the prasad is distributed to public distribution system through which people get subsidised food grains. In certain occasions, leaders of ruling Trinamool Congress are seen going door-to-door to distribute the offerings made at the temple of Lord Jagannath. Each packet of prasad which costs ₹20 contains two sweets and a photograph of the temple and deities Jagannath, Balbhadra and Subhadra. The temple built over 20 acres of land resembles the 12th century famous Jagannath temple of Puri and there has been a controversy over use of the phrase 'Jagannath Dham'. Political observers see the massive investment of the State government in the temple and outreach through distribution of prasad as a 'soft-Hindutva' pitch of the Trinamool Congress leadership to counter BJP's 'Hindutva' push in the State. The Trinamool leadership often compares the Digha Jagannath Temple to Ram Temple in Ayodhya. Kunal Ghosh, State general secretary of the Trinamool, said that the involvement of HIDCO is an administrative matter and administration will answer that. 'Look at what happened when they built the Ram temple. The BJP should think about how many houses and shops were demolished while building the Ram temple in Ayodhya, how many people were made to live on the streets,' Mr. Ghosh said.

Center to develop nine roads leading to Nashik ahead of Kumbh mela
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday said that all roads connecting Nashik will be developed and upgraded in view of the Simhastha Kumbh Mela in Nashik. A total of nine roads will be developed by the central government ahead of the religious meet in 2027 and as per the preliminary estimate, the work is likely to cost a further Rs 4000 crore. A high-level meeting regarding the highway connecting Nashik was held on Sunday in the presence of Union Road Development Minister Nitin Gadkari at Nagpur. Gadkari extended in-principle approval to the construction of necessary roads and facilities required for the upcoming Kumbh Mela to be held in Nashik as a huge crowd of devotees is expected to arrive, leading to a strain on the traffic system. It was decided that a Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared soon and funds will be made available for this. The routes to be developed include, Ghoti – Pahine – Trimbakeshwar – Jawhar Phata; Dwarka Circle – Sinnar IC 21 (Samruddhi Expressway) Nandur Shingote – Kolhar; Nashik to Kasara; Savli Vihir (IC 20 Samruddhi Expressway) Shirdi – Shani Shingnapur Phata (Rahuri Khurd); Nashik to Dhule; Trimbakeshwar – Jawhar – Manor; Shadow Well – Manmad – Malegaon; Ghoti – Sinnar – Vavi – Shirdi; Shani Shingnapur Phata (Rahuri Khurd) – Ahilyanagar (Kharwandi Phata).The meeting approved the Nashik Ring Road. Along with this, it was decided to make the Nashik to Trimbak road six-lane. 'The cost will be calculated post preparation of the DPR. But the central government has assured all possible financial help as well,' said an official from the Maharashtra Public Works Department (PWD). He added, the estimated Rs 4000 crore is for the construction of roads and additional money will be required for the Nashik ring road project. 'Keeping in view the increasing interest of devotees towards Kumbh Mela and the expected crowd, I had requested Prime Minister Narendra Modi to provide assistance at the central government level for its successful planning and enabling infrastructure road development. As a result this meeting was held today,' said Fadnavis. There are eight important routes to Nashik from Mumbai, Gujarat, Palghar, Pune, Ahilyanagar, Sambhajinagar, Dhule. All these routes and the internal roads in Nashik city and the district also connect to the national highway. The meeting considered the development of all those roads. CM Fadnavis said that the expanded road network will provide more safe facilities to the devotees as it will handle the huge traffic expected during the Kumbh Mela.
