Shehzad Ghias claims Maria B sued him for defamation

Pakistani YouTuber, comedian, and podcaster Shehzad Ghias Shaikh has claimed he may face arrest or detention next week in connection with a defamation case involving fashion designer Maria B, being pursued through the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).
In a video published on his YouTube channel, Ghias claimed that he had received a court summons for Monday, but that the official details of the case, including the charges, remained unclear.
'I have no idea what I've been summoned for. I've received no case details,' Ghias said in the video, adding that he feared a First Information Report (FIR) may have been filed by the FIA and subsequently forwarded to the court.
He said that Maria B initially issued a civil legal notice against him for defamation but later pursued criminal defamation charges through the FIA, a move he described as disproportionate and intended to silence dissent.
'They didn't go for a civil suit; they went straight to the FIA,' he said, adding that his criticism of Maria B's actions was based on opinion and did not meet the threshold for defamation under Pakistani law.
Ghias also claimed that the complaint stemmed from his previous commentary and content, including episodes discussing Maria B and influencer-related issues, though he asserted he never initiated a smear campaign or intentionally defamed anyone.
'I never even named her in recent videos. There were far more damaging things I could have done, and I didn't.'
He further said the pressure campaign was part of a wider 'elite culture of silencing critics' in Pakistan, adding: 'The rich in this country think they can use any institution — the FIA, the courts — to crush dissent.'
In a tweet accompanying the video, Ghias wrote:'For months Maria B has been using the FIA to silence us. I have been summoned by the court on Monday now, where I might be arrested or detained… Imagine – going to jail over a joke? Does freedom of speech even exist in Pakistan anymore?'

He urged his followers to raise awareness on social media if he is detained.
'The more pressure there is online, the better my chances of not being jailed for long,' he said.

The Assistant Attorney General told the bench that the FIR was based on a social media post made from the petitioner's account, allegedly targeting a senior official of a security agency. Justice Arshad Ali questioned the petitioner's actions, asking, "Why do you share such content that creates problems?" In response, Advocate Roman Shah denied ownership of the account, stating, "This is not my account. Nowadays, fake accounts are created using other people's photos. I have no knowledge of this post." Listen to article The government is continuing in its latest effort to privatise PIA, months after the previous failed attempt led to an embarrassing situation where a bidder with questionable credentials offered a laughably low bid that did not even meet the minimum bid. Two earlier privatisation attempts have also collapsed in the past two years. But despite the noticeably low interest in the market, privatisation is a critical condition of the IMF's recent bailout, which has made the government a motivated seller. While PIA and the government may claim the airline has gotten its act back in order after it posted a small operating profit in 2024, after 21 consecutive loss-making years, the truth is far more nuanced, as state-administered life support made it possible. About 80% of its debt was offloaded onto public coffers, and several tax exemptions have buoyed its balance sheet and made the airline more attractive to suitors. Unfortunately, the opacity of the bidding process has been a challenge for some otherwise competent potential bidders who are rich in expertise but may lack deep pockets. And despite the government's attempt to make qualification criteria stricter, most of the parties vying for the airline are not active in aviation-related industries. The government should also look into some creative solutions that allow it to receive fair payment — perhaps in guaranteed installments with some deferral period — instead of setting unattainable deadlines for what could be one of the biggest corporate deals in Pakistan's history. It is also worth reanalysing why there has been so little international interest in the airline. Market experts have noted the government's desire for PIA to remain Pakistani creates a conflict between pride and practicality. But the domestic airline industry is competitive enough to pick up the slack even if a prospective buyer wants to streamline PIA's operations. The focus should be on getting taxpayers some value for the billions they have poured down the drain.
