Friends of a man who was found deceased in the burned-down house in Van Wyk Louw Street are reaching out for donations to cremate him.
Johannes Breedt died on June 17. According to his death certificate, he died of natural causes.
Unieta Swanepoel, who knew Breedt described him as a beautiful soul who was snatched away by heroin.
'We loved and cared for him and always tried to get him off the streets. We would feed him; and allow him to have a hot shower and a warm bed. But it was always just for a day or two before he would disappear again,' Swanepoel said.
She said he was sick and weak the Wednesday before his death when he visited her at home.
'I asked him if he used, and he replied he did not have money. When we found him, he had no blanket, just lying on boxes, frozen. I think he was so weak he couldn't get up to look for something warm and froze to death.'
Although cremation is a more affordable option, it still carries a considerable cost.
The cremation is estimated to cost R10 000. Swanepoel paid R1 000 and is pleading to the community to, in the shadow of drug addiction, show kindness and help her lay her friend to rest.
If you can assist, you can contact Swanepoel at 061 500 3488.
