Gautam Gambhir and new Test captain Shubman Gill addressed the team
ahead of their five-Test series against England in the UK, scheduled to get underway on June 20. The series, which begins in Leeds, marks India's start in the ICC World Test Championship cycle for 2025-27. The matches will be played across five venues: Headingley in Leeds, Edgbaston in Birmingham, Lord's and The Oval in London, and Old Trafford in Manchester.

"Comebacks are never easy. Someone who has made a comeback after seven [eight] years had a phenomenal last year. That is something which is inspiring for this entire world. Welcome, Karun," Gambhir said.

Sourav Ganguly On Shubman Gill Era: '...Was Never Worried About Indian Cricket'

Sourav Ganguly is confident that Indian cricket will be alright in the new era with Shubman Gill leading a team without Kohli, Sharma and Ashwin. The India-England series for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy marks the beginning of a new era in Indian cricket. A Shubman Gill-led team embarks on a tour of England without the legendary Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and spinner Ravichandran Ashwin. Despite the expected challenges of this transition, Sourav Ganguly expressed confidence in India's smooth transition, attributing it to the country's robust domestic structure. 'I was never worried about Indian cricket. There will be someone taking Indian cricket forward. I am not surprised with Yashasvi (Jaiswal) because I rate him as a fantastic batter, he is someone who should play all formats," Sourav Ganguly was quoted as saying by PTI. Jaiswal has been impressive since the start of his Test career. The left-hander continued his excellent form with a 101-run knock, setting India on course for a substantial first-innings total. He shared a 91-run partnership with fellow opener KL Rahul (42) for the first wicket. 'I am not surprised by Yashasvi's performance because I have seen him play in Australia, the West Indies, and India, hope he keeps on performing like this but Shubman Gill's improvement is commendable. 'Shubman and his batting away from home, I am telling you India has a lot of talent, there are 4-5 players waiting now who, when given a chance, will score runs," Ganguly said. Ganguly acknowledged that replacing someone like Kohli is challenging but praised Gill's quality, especially in the number four slot, which Kohli had made his own. 'Virat is a class player, finding his replacement will take time. But the rest, I wasn't, I was not surprised by what I saw with Shubman. There is too much quality in Indian cricket because of the system, the quality of domestic cricket, leagues, because of the kind of time and money associations put in developing a player," said Ganguly, who has served as the BCCI president in the past. The former India captain also appreciated the change in approach by wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant, who has managed to curb his natural aggressive instincts. 'Rishabh plays fast bowling well, I didn't like his batting in Australia, he was playing a lot of shots. Yesterday (Friday) he did restrictive batting, he has curtailed his game on his strengths, he is a great player in Tests, and will play all the three formats," Ganguly added. Indian women's team still without win in European leg, stumbles against Belgium in FIH Pro League

The Indian women's hockey team went down 1–5 against host Belgium at the FIH Hockey Pro League 2024-25 in Antwerp on Saturday. It was the team's fifth consecutive defeat at the European leg of the tournament, having lost two matches each to Australia and Argentina in London. In a thrilling contest that saw 17 penalty corners for Belgium, Deepika (6') gave India the lead before goals from Helene Brasseur (37', 55'), Lucie Breyne (41'), Ambre Ballenghien (54'), and Charlotte Englebert (58') sealed victory for the hosts. Notably, all five of Belgium's goals arose from penalty corners. India endured a nervy start as Belgium came out pressing with intent, earning a penalty corner within the opening minute. The early scare was averted, and Savita soon followed up with a sharp save to keep the scoreboard untouched. An unforced error in India's half gifted Belgium possession again, but Vaishnavi stepped up with a crucial interception to shut the door. India waited to pounce, and in its first circle entry, Deepika's penalty corner shot took a deflection off a Belgian defender before finding the back of the net to put India ahead. As the second quarter unfolded, Belgium was in control of proceedings and found two more penalty corners. Minutes before half-time, Lisa Moors threatened to level the scores with a powerful strike from inside the circle, but India's goalkeeper Bichu Devi kept it out. Belgium entered the third quarter having made 10 circle entries to India's four, maintaining steady pressure on the defence. It took five penalty corners before Brasseur finally converted to bring Belgium level. Two more penalty corners followed, and despite a series of sharp saves from Savita, Lucie Breyne struck from close range during yet another set-piece to give Belgium a 2–1 lead. The final ten minutes, however, was completely dominated by the host. In the 54th minute, Ballenghien effectively sealed the contest with a well-taken goal to make it 3–1. Five minutes later, Brasseur converted Belgium's fourth penalty corner, stretching the lead further. Just before the end, Englebert added her name to the scoresheet, calmly slotting home a penalty stroke in the 58th minute to complete a comprehensive 5–1 win for Belgium. The Indian Women's Hockey Team will take on Belgium on Sunday at 4:30 PM IST.

‘Superb, superb, superb': Sunil Gavaskar lauds Rishabh Pant's century vs England, months after ‘stupid, stupid, stupid' tirade against him in Australia

A few months after Sunil Gavaskar slammed Rishabh Pant on air during the Border Gavaskar series shouting 'stupid, stupid, stupid' after the wicketkeeper-batter threw away his wicket against Australia, the Indian legend lauded Pant with shouts of 'superb, superb, superb' when he smashed his 7th Test century against England at Leeds on Saturday. Pant had been at the receiving end of Gavaskar's anger during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 when, in the fourth Test of the series at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), he went to attack a delivery, miscued his shot and gave a catch to third man. The dismissal angered the legendary India cricketer who was in the commentary booth, shouting 'stupid, stupid, stupid!'. On Saturday, a visibly enthusiastic Gavaskar on commentary said, 'Yes, superb, superb, superb. Absolutely terrific batting by the young man.' Pant struck a six off the first ball of the 100th over of India's first innings, clearing the fence off Shoaib Bashir to bring up the milestone. It was his first century since September 2024 when he scored 109 against Bangladesh. In 90 Tests, Dhoni had scored 4,876 runs with six tons and 33 fifties at an average of 38.09 and remains the highest run-scorer as an Indian wicketkeeper-batter in Tests. Pant, who completed 3,000 runs during this innings of 134 off 178 balls (12×4; 6×6), also has 15 fifties in 44 Tests and averages nearly 44. The third in this list is Wriddhiman Saha with two centuries, followed by Syed Kirmani and Farokh Engineer with two each. Nayan Mongia has also scored one century. India ultimately were bowled out by England on 471 runs as Ben Stokes and Josh Tongue took 4 wickets apiece.
