Women cops showcase UP model of responsive policing, Mission Shakti

women police officers
from Uttar Pradesh showcased the state's flagship
Mission Shakti
Scheme as a model for proactive and responsive policing for
women's safety and empowerment
, during the 11th National Conference on Women in Police, held in Chennai on May 14-15.
Organised by the Bureau of Police Research and Development (BPRD) in collaboration with Tamil Nadu Police, the conference served as a national platform for sharing ideas on empowering women in policing.
Led by ADG, Women & Child Safety Organisation (WCSO), Padmaja Chauhan, the delegation included Vrinda Shukla (SP WCSO/1090), Anukriti Sharma (ASP, Sambhal) and other officers.
Themes of the conference included recruitment and training, gender-sensitive uniforms, career progression, work-life balance, mental health and welfare, and best practices in anti-human trafficking initiatives.

women-centric policing

She discussed initiatives like women help desks, beat system, time-bound investigation protocols monitored via ITSSO portal, and rise in conviction rates in crimes against women. She attributed this success to institutional reforms and the political will of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
ADG Padmaja Chauhan was also among 14 police personnel honoured nationally for exceptional contributions. She was felicitated for expanding the mandate of women beat constables in Phase V of Mission Shakti. This included targeted drives against acid sale, obscene content, illegal spas, and inspection of women's shelter homes, along with tracking of repeat offenders. Intelligence gathered through these operations led to hundreds of FIRs and preventive actions across the state.
Uttar Pradesh also earned distinction at the conference for having the highest number of women police personnel in the country, followed by host state Tamil Nadu. The event was inaugurated by Union minister of state for home affairs Nityanand Rai and concluded with remarks from Tamil Nadu deputy CM Udhayanidhi Stalin.

At 98.6%, UP tops in disposal of sexual harassment cases

As per ITSSO data from April 21, 2018, to June 3, 2025, UP leads all states in disposal of cases related to crimes against women and girls, with a disposal rate of 98.6%. During this period, 1,22,130 FIRs were registered in the state. UP is followed by Delhi (97.6%) and Haryana (97.2%). In 2018, UP ranked 7th with a disposal rate of 95%. In terms of compliance rate (filing of charge sheets within 60 days), Goa leads with 88.50%, followed by Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman & Diu at 88.30%, while UP stands third nationally with 80.6%. However, among major states, UP tops the list, followed by Uttarakhand (80%) and Madhya Pradesh (77%). In 2018, UP ranked 10th in this category. Chauhan said that UP's pendency rate was only 0.2%, making it the best-performing state.

BJD chief used to read out written speeches, says Majhi

Bhubaneswar: A day after Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik's 'long speeches do not make development' jibe, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi on Wednesday claimed that the BJD chief read write-ups instead of speaking to the people directly when he was the chief minister. Majhi made the comment while addressing the 'State Level Vikas Mela' here being held to mark the completion of his government's one year in office on June 12. 'The Leader of the Opposition ridiculed the BJP government over my long speeches and alleged non-performance. What (Patnaik) were you doing all along? You used to read out written speeches. You had no link with the people. Just waving to people for two minutes and never attending the CM's Grievance Cell for 16 years,' Majhi said. Majhi also attacked Patnaik over his style of governance and alleged that a handful of officers from the CMO used to attend CM's Grievance Cell and collect petitions from people. 'Those petitions were thrown into the dustbins. What prevented you from meeting people and listening to their grievances? Finally, people rejected your government,' Majhi said. After ruling the State for 24 years, the BJD was defeated by the BJP in the Assembly elections last year. At a party programme on Tuesday, Patnaik accused the Mohan Charan Majhi dispensation of focusing only on long speeches and publicity, instead of real development. Noting that he became Chief Minister of Odisha starting his political career as a 'Sarpanch', Majhi claimed he understands the plights of people at the grassroots level. Majhi said the CM's grievance hearing sessions are also now being held outside Bhubaneswar and attended by people in large numbers. 'Of the 10,894 grievances heard in grievance sessions, 9,388 cases were resolved. More than 5 lakh grievances were resolved through Jana Sunani portal,' an official note said. Referring to Patnaik's allegations that women's empowerment has been grossly affected as Mission Shakti initiative is being weakened in the BJP government, Majhi alleged that the former chief minister has insulted women. Majhi said, 'Making provision of some funds does not make women empowered. During our small tenure, the BJP government has created over 16 lakh Lakhpati Didis. Women get financial assistance through Subhadra Yojana and utilise them in small businesses. What prevented you from giving financial assistance to the women for doing business?' Majhi also came down heavily on the BJD president on the farmer's issue. 'You (BJD government) had promised to give Rs 100 per quintal of paddy as subsidy, but failed. We in the BJP government are giving Rs 800 per quintal of paddy as input subsidy. The farmers in Odisha now sell their paddy at the rate of Rs 3,100 per quintal,' the Chief Minister said. Around 17 lakh farmers' families have added Rs 30,000 per annum to their income after the BJP formed the government in the State, he said.

BJD's women, youth meet to highlight the government's failures

BHUBANESWAR: The BJD is planning to hold several programmes across the state as part of the Jana Jagaran Abhijan (people's awareness campaign) to highlight the failures of the BJP government in Odisha during the last year. The programmes include a massive women's conference in Jajpur on June 13 and a youth convention in Puri on June 18 to counter the massive week-long outreach campaign planned by the BJP government on the occasion of its first anniversary in the state on June 12. Opposition chief whip Pramila Mallik and former minister Sanjay Das Burma said the BJP government's promise of providing Rs 50,000 to every woman in the state through Subhadra Yojana has proven to be false. Claiming that the BJP government is trying to take credit for the achievements of Mission Shakti, they said, 'The BJD will organise a massive protest against this during the state-level conference in Jajpur on June 13 where women from all over the state will participate.' The conference in Puri will be to protest against the government's failure to provide justice to the youth and students of the state, they added.
