Stadium Sarawak upgrades hinge on available budget ― Minister

Borneo Post27-05-2025

KUCHING (May 27): The redevelopment of Stadium Sarawak remains a key focus in Sarawak's push to become a regional sports hub, though the final scope of upgrades will depend heavily on available funding, said Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
The Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister said while the stadium is an essential venue for athletics and opening ceremonies of various sport events, financial considerations will ultimately determine the extent of its redevelopment.
'We will have to see. Cost is always one of the main factors ― whether we want to proceed with the development, and at what stage,' he told a press conference after delivering his ministerial winding-up speech at the State Legislative Assembly (DUN) sitting here earlier today.
Abdul Karim noted that aside from Stadium Sarawak, there are 18 other sports to be hosted, each requiring facility upgrades.
'If the budget does not allow for full upgrades, we may have to determine which improvements are sufficient for the stadium to accommodate the sport events and the opening ceremony,' he said.
Earlier, during his speech, Abdul Karim reaffirmed the state government's commitment to developing sports infrastructure across Sarawak in its efforts to make the state a regional sports hub.
'Led by the Sarawak Sports Corporation (SSC), key initiatives include upgrading grassroots and elite sports facilities to improve access, talent development and quality of life.
'A highlight is the redevelopment of Stadium Sarawak, which is set to meet international standards with smart and athlete-friendly features,' he said.
He added that SSC will also implement a Critical Maintenance Audit Plan to ensure long-term sustainability of sport facilities.

Govt agrees to fast-track sepak takraw academy by year-end, says Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR: The government has agreed to expedite the establishment of Malaysia's first national sepak takraw academy, with completion targeted by the end of this year. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the decision reflects the government's commitment to strengthening traditional sports and nurturing homegrown talent to compete at the highest levels "We will make the sepak takraw academy a reality in this country. I believe sepak takraw — like football — is a sport that makes us proud, not just nationally but also regionally and globally. "The academy can be completed before the end of this year because the Madani government is a government that works hard," he said in his speech at the launch of National Youth Day here today. Also present were Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, Deputy Minister Adam Adli Abdul Halim, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Datuk Seri Dr Zaliha Mustafa, and Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul. Anwar said Hannah had requested an allocation of RM6 million for the project, which will serve as a platform to develop young athletes and raise the sport to greater heights. He also acknowledged the growing interest among Malaysian youth in both traditional and modern recreational activities, saying these pursuits should be supported as long as they remain within cultural values and norms. "This is part of our cultural heritage — from cities to kampungs, from youth who dance for leisure to those who play futsal and football. "As long as it stays within the boundaries of proper conduct, we support it," he said. He added that the unity government would continue prioritising youth empowerment through sports, arts, and positive community engagement, in line with the Madani vision. Anwar also announced that the government has agreed to allocate RM4 million to the Malaysian Youth Council (MBM) to strengthen youth development. He said the decision followed a request by the council's president, Mohd Izzat Afifi Abdul Hamid. "This is an increase of RM1 million from last year's allocation, which saw an additional RM3 million channelled to the Youth and Sports Ministry. "Everyone is asking for allocations — whispering to me — and because we practise good governance, we make sure leaders don't plunder billions."

Samarahan Bike Challenge returns with more categories, bigger prizes and global participation

KUCHING (June 12): The highly anticipated Samarahan Bike Challenge (SBC) is set to return for its ninth edition on June 22, promising a bigger and more competitive event with expanded race categories, increased prize money, and the inclusion of international cyclists. Sarawak Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said the annual event is once again supported by his ministry and organised by the Samarahan District Office in collaboration with the Sarawak Cycling Association. 'The criterium-style race will flag off at 7am from The Summer Shopping Mall in Kota Samarahan. This is one of the most awaited cycling competitions in the region due to its exciting and challenging course layout, sharp corners and quality road conditions. 'For the 2025 edition, two new categories have been introduced: the Veteran category for participants aged 40 and above, and the Youth Women category for those aged 15 and under. 'With the addition of these new divisions, the total number of race categories now stands at seven,' he told a press conference at the Baitul Makmur II Building here today. He also said that the Men Open category is open to participants aged 16 and above, attracting seasoned and competitive riders while the Sarawak Closed category, also for those aged 16 and above, is limited to local riders from the state. The newly introduced Veteran category will also cater to cyclists aged 40 and above, combining the previously separate Men's Master A and Master B classes. Meanwhile, the Ladies Open category welcomes female participants aged 16 and above. 'The Junior category is open to younger riders aged between 16 and 20, providing a platform for up-and-coming talent. The Youth Men category accommodates boys aged 15 and under, while the Youth Women category, new for this year, gives young female cyclists in the same age group a chance to compete. 'These additions aim to further support the development of grassroots cycling talent in line with Sarawak's aspiration to become a regional sport powerhouse,' he said. The total prize pool of RM23,900 will be awarded across all categories, with the top three finishers in the Men Open category receiving RM1,500, RM1,200, and RM800 respectively while other categories offer attractive rewards, with all categories awarding up to the 10th place. Abdul Karim also revealed that as of June 10, a total of 175 participants have registered with the Men Open, Sarawak Closed, and Veteran categories saw the highest entries with 99,120, and 102 participants respectively. 'Notably, the event has drawn international competitors from Canada, Germany, New Zealand, the British Virgin Islands, Brunei, and Indonesia,' he said. He also said that among the local highlights this year is the participation of national cycling veteran Anuar Manan and prominent teams such as Kembar Melaka, Jupha Perlis, Elmi KL and Team PDRM-G. With that, he underscored the broader impact of the event, noting its role in boosting sport tourism in Sarawak. 'This event not only fosters sporting excellence but also supports the local economy such as homestays, budget hotels, eateries and transport services all benefit from the influx of riders, supporters, and their families,' he said. Thus, organisers anticipate even more registrations before the event kicks off, signaling a strong comeback for SBC 2025 as a premier fixture in the state's cycling calendar.
