Hrishikesh Kanitkar Appointed India 'A' Head Coach For England Tour: Report
Last Updated:
Hrishikesh Kanitkar has been named the head coach of India A for England tour.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has reportedly appointed Hrishikesh Kanitkar as the head coach of the India A team that'll tour England for three matches preceding a five-Test tour by the senior men's side. According to Cricbuzz, Subhodeep Ghosh of Assam (fielding coach) and Troy Cooley (bowling coach) will accompany Kanitkar, a former India and Maharashtra batter.
Kanitkar has previously coached the India Under-19 and women's sides, and occasionally the senior men's side, too.
India 'A' will play two First-Class matches against England Lions at Canterbury and Northampton, respectively, before participating in an intra-squad clash against the senior side behind closed doors in the lead-up to the first Test on May 20 in Headingley. The first four-day match will be played from May 30, followed by the second on June 6, and the intra-squad from June 13.
The BCCI recently announced an 18-member squad, which will leave for England in batches in the coming days. Kolkata batter Abhimanyu Easwaran has been chosen to lead the contingent with Dhruv Jurel as his deputy, while Ishan Kishan will join the latter as the second frontline wicketkeeper.
Shubman Gill (who many reports claim to be the next senior captain after Rohit Sharma) and his Gujarat Titans opening partner, Sai Sudharsan, will join the squad before the second four-day match.
The series will be closely watched as there are several available spots on the senior side. Six players from the senior squad that played the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy — Harshit Rana, Akash Deep, Sarfaraz Khan, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Dhruv Jurel, and Nitish Kumar Reddy — have been picked and will be aiming to retain their place in the senior squad.
The likes of Manav Suthar, Tanush Kotian and Harsh Dubey would be vying for the spin all-rounder's spot after Ravichandran Ashwin's retirement, while Khaleel Ahmed and Anshul Kamboj would want to put their name in the ring for the pacer's spots.
India 'A' Squad For England Tour: Abhimanyu Easwaran (C), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Karun Nair, Dhruv Jurel (VC) (WK), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Shardul Thakur, Ishan Kishan (WK), Manav Suthar, Tanush Kotian, Mukesh Kumar, Akash Deep, Harshit Rana, Anshul Kamboj, Khaleel Ahmed, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sarfaraz Khan, Tushar Deshpande and Harsh Dubey — plus — Shubman Gill and Sai Sudharsan from the second match.

Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Sparks Debate: Sunil Gavaskar Questions Why Sachin's Name Comes Second
Former India captain and iconic batsman Sunil Gavaskar has publicly criticized the naming order of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy, the new title for the Test series played between India and England. While acknowledging the ECB's right to christen the series as it sees fit, Gavaskar strongly asserted that the order—placing Anderson before Tendulkar—disrespects not only the seniority but also the magnitude of Tendulkar's legacy. 'For most, if not all, Indian cricket lovers it is jarring to know that Anderson's name comes first,' Gavaskar wrote in his Mid-Day column, urging Indian fans and media to refer to it as the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy instead. The decision to merge and rename the Test series—previously contested as the Pataudi Trophy in England and Anthony De Mello Trophy in India—was presented as a tribute to two modern giants of Test cricket: Sachin Tendulkar and James Anderson. Tendulkar, the most-capped cricketer in history with 200 Tests and over 15,000 runs, and Anderson, the most prolific fast bowler in Tests with 704 wickets, are undeniably icons of the red-ball game. However, Gavaskar believes the naming fails to reflect cricketing hierarchy and historical contribution. Tendulkar vs Anderson: A Legacy Comparison Sachin Tendulkar Test Matches: 200 Test Runs: 15,921 Centuries: 51 ODI Runs: 18,426 (highest) World Cup: Winner (2011) James Anderson Test Matches: 188 Test Wickets: 704 (highest among pacers) ODI Record: Moderate World Cup: No title Gavaskar emphasized that while Anderson's Test achievements are historic, they do not eclipse Tendulkar's multi-format dominance, especially considering Anderson's effectiveness has largely been in English conditions. Gavaskar's Broader Appeal: Let the Fans Decide In his column, Gavaskar didn't merely critique the ECB and BCCI's naming decision—he called upon Indian cricket fans and media to organically reclaim the narrative. 'I urge all Indian cricket lovers including the India media to call it the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy,' he wrote, appealing to a form of cultural and sporting correction. This echoes his earlier disappointment when reports emerged that the Pataudi Trophy would be retired. Gavaskar had then remarked that it reflected 'a total lack of sensitivity to the contribution made by the Pataudis to cricket in both England and India.' The Sentiment vs the Statute While there is no official rulebook for name order in such bilateral honors, the convention often places the senior or more globally influential name first. Given Tendulkar's broader impact on international cricket—especially across all formats and geographies—many feel Gavaskar's point holds merit beyond nationalistic sentiment. Yet, the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy also represents a symbolic coming together of two cricketing cultures, with Anderson embodying England's modern fast-bowling legacy and Tendulkar standing as India's most revered batting icon. A Trophy That Reflects Two Eras As the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy begins a new chapter in the storied rivalry between India and England, it's clear that the renaming has sparked deeper conversations—about cricketing legacy, national pride, and how we choose to remember sporting legends. Whether fans and commentators choose to echo Gavaskar's call and refer to it as the Tendulkar-Anderson Trophy remains to be seen. What is certain, though, is that this debate adds yet another layer of intrigue and passion to a rivalry that continues to define the soul of Test cricket.

What Did Jasprit Bumrah Say In India Huddle On Day 3? BTS Footage Reveals
Last Updated: BCCI's BTS footage from Day 3 at Headingley reveals Jasprit Bumrah's strong pre-match message to Indian bowlers. Jasprit Bumrah has elevated himself to be the new superstar of Indian cricket, someone for whom people buy tickets. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has shared a video on social media showing the behind-the-scenes of his Sunday (June 22) during the third day of the Headingley Test in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Bumrah completed a record fifer in that match, establishing himself firmly as one of the greats on the field. However, his off-field impact was on full display too. Whenever he came out of the dressing room, he was met with huge cheers, mostly from kids standing around the corner to catch a glimpse. The crowd went bonkers when he got down from the team bus returning to the hotel after the day's play. There were some other important titbits of information in the video, including an insight into how Bumrah warms up and the start of his team huddle speech before the match: 'As a bowling unit, let's be switched on from the word go'. Watch the video here: We didn't get to hear his full speech, but whatever he must have said seemed to work for the bowlers as India managed to keep England six runs behind their first innings total of 471. After not finding any support on the previous day, Bumrah saw Prasidh Krishna and Mohammed Siraj contribute with three and two wickets, respectively. The leader of the attack also added two more to his quota, finishing with figures of 5/83. He'd have had even more wickets if not for three dropped catches. However, in the post-day press conference, the pacer denied to blame his fielders too much. 'I am disappointed for a second when catches are dropped. It's part and parcel of the game, and the guys are new and working so hard. I don't want to create a scene and put more pressure on them. Nobody is doing it intentionally. So they will learn from this experience," Bumrah added. India extended their advantage to 96 runs at the loss of two wickets, with KL Rahul and Shubman Gill at the crease. First Published:

Karthik said in his video message, echoing the sentiments of millions who watched Bumrah dismantle England's batting line-up yet again. Calling him a 'national treasure', Karthik didn't mince words in underlining Bumrah's importance to Indian cricket. 'Whenever India needs a wicket, he delivers. He's chalk and cheese above most bowlers. It's his mind more than anything that just ticks as he knows how to pick up wickets,' Karthik said. India needs to wrap him in cotton wool, take care of him. He needs to be there in all the big matches because when he's there, the bowling attack looks completely different.' Bumrah's brilliance was the highlight of England's first innings at Headingley, where the hosts were bowled out for 465, handing India a narrow six-run lead. Despite India's sloppy fielding as four catches were dropped off Bumrah's bowling alone, the pacer's spell ensured the match stayed alive and evened the contest for a thrilling second innings battle. Quiz: Who's that IPL player? Meanwhile, KL Rahul 's calm unbeaten 47 and India's steady second innings (90/2 at stumps on Day 3, with a 96-run lead) have set up an enticing final two days, weather permitting. As fans hold their breath for another Bumrah special when India defends whatever target they set, Karthik's call for a 'special contract' feels more relevant than ever because, quite simply, there is only one Jasprit Bumrah.
