NEET UG 2025: Known for its rich cultural heritage, terracotta tiles, hill stations like Ooty, and home to some of the UNESCO sites, Tamil Nadu holds significance for Indians not only for its vibrant traditions, but also for its medical colleges. The state has the highest number of medical colleges in the country as of 2023-24. Tamil Nadu is home to 38 government medical colleges and 36 private medical institutes in 2023-24, as highlighted by the Union Health Ministry.
With NEET UG results declared, students might be considering various options for admission and for the counselling process. To make a decision that is fruitful for a candidate's medical career, it is important to know which medical colleges in Tamil Nadu stand tall.

In the National Institutional Framework Rankings (NIRF), released by the Minsitry of Education every year, these are the seven medical colleges that have ranked in the 2024 rankings under the medical category.

1. A candidate should be a Tamil Nadu resident.
2. For those schooled in TN (Class 6-12), a Nativity Certificate is required (not a Permanent Residency Certificate).
3. Supporting documents like parents' Birth certificates, Ration Card, or education certificates may be needed.
4. If a candidate has completed his or her schooling from a state outside TN, they will need to submit parents' documents and an undertaking stating they have not submitted their application under another state's quota.
5. NRI/PIO candidates can apply under the Management Quota if they meet the state government's rules.
6. Non-TN students living/studying in TN are considered under the open category, not the state quota.
Those who qualify will be eligible to participate in the state counselling process for MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other undergraduate medical programmes in the state. In the state, the Directorate of Medical Education and Research (DME), host the counselling.

Ahmedabad Plane Crash: 231 Victims Identified Through DNA Tests

Ahmedabad: Over a week after 270 people were killed in the Ahmedabad plane crash, 231 victims have been identified through DNA tests, and the bodies of 210 of them were handed over to their families, a health official said on Friday. A London-bound Air India flight AI-171 carrying 242 passengers and crew members crashed in Ahmedabad on June 12. All but one on board the plane died along with nearly 29 on the ground when the aircraft smashed into a medical complex in Meghaninagar area of the city shortly after its take-off. Authorities are carrying out DNA matching to establish the identity of the victims, as several bodies were charred beyond recognition or damaged. "Till Friday evening, 231 DNA samples have been matched and relatives have been contacted. So far, the mortal remains of 210 victims have been handed over to families," Medical Superintendent of Ahmedabad Civil Hospital Rakesh Joshi said. The 210 victims comprise 166 Indians, 36 British nationals, seven Portuguese nationals and one Canadian, he said. Of the 166 Indians, a total of 155 were on board the ill-fated aircraft, Joshi informed. The Indian victims who were identified so far belonged to various parts of the country, including Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Diu and Nagaland, he said. The state government had earlier said that samples of 250 victims, including persons on board the ill-fated flight as well as those killed on the ground, were collected for identification.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday (June 20, 2025) said the health sector in the country had seen a 'remarkable transformation' in the last 11 years with the Centre adopting a 'holistic and inclusive' approach in addressing public health issues. Speaking after inaugurating the Bengaluru campus of Adichunchanagiri University and BGS Medical College and Hospital in Bengaluru North Taluk, Mr. Shah said Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for the health sector has significantly benefited the people, especially the marginalised and weaker sections of society. High cost of treatment 'The Prime Minister had said in Gujarat 26 years ago that the main challenge faced by the poor is illness and the high cost of treatment. The administration has to make healthcare accessible to the poor. I can say with pride today that after becoming the Prime Minister, Mr. Modi fulfilled this promise by providing 60 crore people from the poor and weaker sections of society with free medical treatment of up to ₹5 lakh under the Ayushman Bharat scheme,' Mr. Shah said, adding that health has been addressed holistically. 'While toilets for 12 crore households have been built, the Fit India Movement was launched to inculcate a healthy lifestyle among people. Various other initiatives such as International Yoga Day, Mission Indradhanush to provide free vaccinations and Poshan Abhiyan to provide care for mothers and children were introduced. Through the promotion of generic medicines, people are now able to buy medicines at just 20% of their original cost at 15,000 outlets,' he said. The Union Minister pointed out that the number of All India Institutes of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) have grown from seven in 2014 to 23 now and medical colleges from 387 to 780 in the country. MBBS seats have increased from 51,000 to 1.80 lakh, and postgraduate medical seats from 31,000 to 74,000. 'This means 1.18 lakh new MBBS doctors and 74,000 postgraduate doctors are graduating every year, compared to just 50,000 earlier,' he noted. State's medical education Karnataka's Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil said the State has the highest number of Medical Education seats in the country. 'There are 70 medical colleges in the State, including 24 government colleges,' he said. 'Allowing private participation in Medical Education was a landmark decision. By establishing engineering colleges, we created an ecosystem that helped Bengaluru emerge as the IT capital. However, there is still a shortage of doctors. Around 24 lakh students appear for NEET each year, competing for only one lakh seats,' he said. 'India must promote the establishment of more medical colleges, and I have conveyed this to Mr. Amit Shah.' Union Minister of Heavy Industries and Steel H.D. Kumaraswamy, Union Minister of State for Railways and Jal Shakti V. Somanna, Nirmalanandanatha Mahaswamiji of the Adichunchanagiri Math apart from other politicians and seers were present.
