Jakob Poeltl addresses future with Raptors
Poeltl likes what he's seen and believes there are better days ahead, and he'll be ready to listen. 'I haven't given (my contract) any thought, like, those conversations are gonna start coming once the season ends, and I'm assuming pretty quickly after the season ends,' he said. 'I haven't had any conversations yet. But big picture, I mean, for sure … I've bought into this process and I've kind of gone through the tough times already. So, this is my home right now and I really hope it's gonna be in the future as well.'

It's why the Raptors rebuffed any interest in teams trying to acquire Poeltl at the trade deadline by keeping their asking price at the high-end of the market — believed to be two good first-round picks or some equivalent. Instead, it's likely that the Raptors — who have Poeltl under contract next season before a player option kicks in ahead of the 2026-27 season — will engage in discussions on a contract extension that will keep Poeltl in Toronto through the rest of his prime. -via SportsNet / March 6, 2025

Elliotte Friedman Reveals Mitch Marner's Rumored Free Agency Plan to Maximize Earnings
Elliotte Friedman Reveals Mitch Marner's Rumored Free Agency Plan to Maximize Earnings originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The assumption around Toronto Maple Leafs winger Mitch Marner's looming free agency was clear in what he was chasing in the open market up until now. The Maple Leafs forward, according to most reports, is widely expected to try and land a maximum-term, maximum-money contract when he hits the open market July 1. Advertisement However, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman revealed on Sunday's episode of the "32 Thoughts" podcast, that may no longer be the case. 'Marner is the number one name on the market,' Friedman said. "There was a rumor going around this week that he might look at a four-year deal and then go for another one.' Friedman said this plan is gaining traction around the league, and he's the first to report such a Marner mindset since the end of Toronto's season. According to the insider, teams believe Marner may now pursue a shorter-term contract — something in the three-to-four-year range — instead of the full seven-year deal most expected. Advertisement The logic is financial and based on the NHL's salary cap, which is projected to rise steeply in the next several years, it allows for bigger contracts each passing season. Toronto Maple Leafs right wing Mitch Marner (16) follows the play during a game at Scotiabank Turchiaro-Imagn Images Locking in now could limit Marner's long-term earnings potential, which is something that he might be looking to maximize. On top of that, Friedman added that Marner's camp has not been able to engage in contract talks with Toronto. 'The Maple Leafs have tried to talk to Marner," Friedman said. "Marner's camp is not engaged with them. "I think everybody knows the way this is going to be heading — that on July 1, he's going to hit the market. Everything around him is news — it's big news.' Advertisement The Maple Leafs drafted Marner with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2015 NHL draft, and if he leaves Toronto, he'd do so with 741 points in 657 games over nine seasons. Panthers' Aaron Ekblad Opens Up on Free Agency Expectations
Panthers' Aaron Ekblad Opens Up on Free Agency Expectations originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Aaron Ekblad has played his entire career with the Florida Panthers since being selected first overall in 2014, but his time in Sunrise might come to an end on July 1, when his current contract will expire. Advertisement Ekblad remains a key piece on the Panthers' blue line after logging 24 minutes per game this postseason while scoring 13 points across 19 games en route to a second straight Stanley Cup with Florida. The blueliner isn't planning to leave Florida, but with July fast approaching, the Panthers and their longest-tenured player still haven't reached an agreement for a contract extension to keep him in tow for the future. 'Conversations have been had,' Ekblad said, per Jameson Olive of 'Obviously, nothing material yet, but they'll be working on it. Things seem to come down to the last minute here.' Advertisement Ekblad said he wants to stay in Sunrise and made his intentions clear. 'I've spent 11 years here," Ekblad said. "It's home, and I expect it to be home.' Florida Panthers defenseman Aaron Ekblad (5) calls out to teammates during a 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs E. Sokolowski-Imagn Images Earlier this season, in March, Ekblad was suspended 20 games for a violation of the NHL's performance-enhancing substances policy and missed time before the Panthers' latest postseason run. Still, both sides appear intent on continuing the partnership. Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported on Saturday that he expects the Panthers to sign Ekblad to a lower-money, longer-term type of deal. "They are going to try," Friedman wrote. "He's 29, and has battled some pretty serious injuries. This is a situation where you could see the Panthers giving term to keep down the AAV. Advertisement "In a perfect world, they'd happily keep him, but you can't hold on to everyone, and anyone who looks that good in a headband will have suitors."
