Patna: CM
Nitish Kumar
has questioned Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) chief Chirag Paswan's intention to contest the upcoming
Bihar assembly elections
, despite already being a Union minister with, as he put it, "a bright and long political career ahead".
This was revealed by Jamui MP Arun Bharti, who spoke to this newspaper on Sunday.
According to Bharti, Nitish asked Chirag, "You are a Union minister, a young leader with a bright future. So, what is the need to contest the assembly elections now?" He also enquired about the constituency Chirag was considering, Bharti said.
Chirag has already announced that his party is preparing to contest all 243 assembly seats in Bihar, fuelling speculation about his future political course, particularly as younger leaders such as RJD's Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, BJP's Samrat Choudhary and Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor jostle for prominence in the state's political arena.
Bharti, who is also Chirag's brother-in-law, said the conversation took place in a cordial setting in Siwan ahead of PM Narendra Modi's rally on June 20. "I will go by the party's decision in this regard. I will come to seek your blessings before contesting the polls," he quoted Chirag as saying.
Bharti added that Chirag reiterated his oft-quoted phrase, "Bihar is calling", while explaining his vision for the state to Nitish.
"He told the CM that, like him, he too wants to be directly involved in state politics to take Bihar out of the RJD's 'jungle raj'," Bharti said.
Reacting to Chirag's political positioning, RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav remarked on Sunday, "Chirag should speak openly that he wants to become CM instead of doing the drama of 'Bihar is calling'."
Bharti claimed that the RJD was attempting to spread confusion about alleged rifts within the NDA, as they feared a united ruling alliance could reduce the opposition to fewer seats than it secured in the 2020 assembly polls.
"In fact, the LJP (RV) is set to host around two lakh people at Rajgir in CM Nitish's home district Nalanda, with his blessings, at the 'Bahujan Bhim Sankalp Samagam' on June 29," he said.
Bharti also referred to a letter Chirag wrote to Nitish on June 20, raising concerns about recent amendments to road accident compensation rules in Bihar. "The amendments made recently by the state govt are proving to be complicated and troublesome for the public in practice. In the earlier system, an immediate relief amount was provided to the victim's family through the DM or SDO concerned. Now, the compensation amount will be recovered from the vehicle owner or their insurance company via the transport department.
For this, one must go through the claim tribunal process, which is technical and time-consuming, making it impossible for people to get immediate relief," the letter read.

Union Minister Hardeep Puri, Irish PM Martin, Canadian Minister Anandasangaree pay tribute to victims of Kanishka bombing

Cork [Ireland], June 23 (ANI): On the 40th anniversary of the Kanishka bombing, Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri, Irish Prime Minister, Micheal Martin, and Canadian Minister of Public Safety, Gary Anandasangaree, laid a wreath at the Ahakista Memorial in Cork in Ireland, to pay homage to the victims. On June 23, 1985, Air India Flight 182 was blown up by the Canada-based Khalistani terrorist group Babbar Khalsa near Cork, resulting in the deaths of all 329 passengers on board. Speaking at the event, Micheal Martin said, 'Very honoured to be here in Ahakista this morning on this 40th anniversary of that terrible day in 1985 that saw the Air India flight cruelly and horrifically brought down off our coastline. It's always a privilege and honour to attend this sober commemoration and to witness the dignity, dedication and care with which you remember your loved ones who died so horrifically 40 years ago today.' He stated, '329 innocent people lost their lives over the skies of Ireland that morning, and the passing of time does not dim the scale of loss and this atrocity. We feel the enormity of your loss when we see the faces and read the stories on the memorial here, before us. Especially moving are these simple descriptions: student, child, so many young lives taken far too soon. While the scale of this horrific act is of global significance, we should never forget that it is an intensely personal tragedy. The loss and grief felt by you, the families and loved ones of the people who died that June morning in 1985 is deeply personal. One only needs to come here on any year and listen to you speak, witness you placing flowers into the sea or laying wreaths to understand how powerful that grief endures.' He also offered condolences to the people of India, the United Kingdom, Portugal and Canada over the recent plane crash in Ahmedabad. On June 12, a London-bound Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed into a hostel complex of BJ Medical College in the Meghani Nagar area of Gujarat's Ahmedabad shortly after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. Martin said, 'I'm sure that this year those memories will have added poignancy as those events were echoed tragically with the horrific accident in Ahmedabad just over 10 days ago and I want to take this opportunity to again offer my sincere condolences and those of the of the people of Ireland, to the people of India, United Kingdom, Portugal and Canada and the families of all who perished in that crash. Most of us can only imagine the heartbreak suffered by the loved ones of those who died in that flight, but you here today, you know that suffering, and I know all of those people are in all our thoughts and prayers.' 'It is through sadness and grief that we are gathered here but what I do find heartening is what has emerged from this tragedy, what all of you have created from this dignity, love and remembrance and also a deepened connection between Canada, India and Ireland and especially the deep bond forged between the families of the victims of this atrocity and the local community here in a Harkista and Cork more generally,' he added. During the event, Mayor of the County of Cork, Councillor Joe Carroll, laid a wreath at the Ahakista Memorial in Cork. People in large numbers were present at the event to pay tribute to the victims of the Kanishka bombing. School students paid musical tribute to victims at the Ahakista Memorial in Cork. An Indian delegation arrived in Ireland to attend the 40th anniversary of the memorial of the Kanishka terror attack. The delegation led by Hardeep Singh Puri includes BJP MLA in Delhi Assembly, Arvinder Singh Lovely, Minister of State in the Uttar Pradesh government, Baldev Singh Aulakh, BJP MLA from Sadulshahar in Ganganagar, Rajasthan Assembly, Gurveer Singh Brar, BJP MLA from RS Pura in Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, Narinder Singh Raina, BJP MLA from Kashipur in the Uttarakhand Assembly, Trilok Singh Cheema- BJP MLA from Kashipur in Uttarakhand Assembly, BJP National General Secretary Tarun Chugh and India's Ambassador to Ireland, Akhilesh Mishra. This event not only commemorates the 329 innocent victims of the 1985 terror attack but also reinforces the global commitment against terrorism. While heading to Cork, Hardeep Singh Puri in a post on X wrote, 'On the way from Heathrow to Cork... The dastardly mid-air bombing of Air India Kanishka Flight 182 in 1985, which claimed 329 innocent lives off the Irish Coast, remains one of the most inhuman acts of terror in aviation history. I was able to pay tribute to the victims at the Kanishka Memorial at Humber Bay Park in Toronto in September 2019 where I also met family members of several victims who had shared their pain and suffering.' 'On Monday, 23 June 2025, I will lead an Indian delegation comprising senior Punjab leader Sh @tarunchughbjp Ji, legislators from several states Sdr @ArvinderLovely Ji, Sdr @BaldevAulakh Ji, Sdr @GurveerBrar Ji and Sdr Trilok Singh Cheema Ji, to join the Irish Prime Minister HE @MichealMartinTD, Canadian Minister of Public Safety HE Gary Anandasangaree @gary_srp and others, to pay homage to the victims at an event at the Ahakista Memorial in Cork, Ireland, in a solemn moment of remembrance and unity, on the 40th anniversary of the reprehensible Kanishka Bombing,' he added. Amit Shah to chair 25th Central Zonal Council meeting in Uttar Pradesh tomorrow

New Delhi [India], June 23 (ANI): Union Home Minister Amit Shah will chair the 25th meeting of the Central Zonal Council on Tuesday in Uttar Pradesh's Varanasi, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) said on Monday. The meeting will be attended by the Chief Ministers of the member states, along with two senior ministers from each state. The Chief Secretaries of the state governments and other senior officials, as well as senior officials from the Central government, will also participate in the meeting. The Central Zonal Council comprises the states of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Uttar Pradesh. The meeting is being organised by the Inter-State Council Secretariat under the Ministry of Home Affairs in collaboration with the Uttar Pradesh government. Under Sections 15 to 22 of the States Reorganisation Act, 1956, five Zonal Councils were established. The Union Home Minister is the chairperson of these five Zonal Councils, and the Chief Ministers, Lieutenant Governors and Administrators of the member states and Union Territories are their members. Among these members, the Chief Minister of one member state (rotating every year) acts as the vice-chairperson. From each member state, the governor nominates two ministers as members of the council. Each Zonal Council has also formed a permanent committee at the level of the Chief Secretaries. Issues proposed by the states are initially presented to the permanent committee of the concerned Zonal Council for discussion. After consideration by the permanent committee, the remaining issues are then presented to the Zonal Council meeting for further deliberation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has emphasised the need to leverage cooperative and competitive federalism for the all-round development of the country. With the belief that strong states make a strong nation, the Zonal Councils provide a structured mechanism for dialogue and discussion on issues affecting two or more states or the Centre and states, and through this, serve as an important platform to enhance mutual cooperation. The role of the Zonal Councils is advisory; however, over the past few years, these councils have proven to be an important factor in promoting healthy bonds of mutual understanding and cooperation in various fields. With the cooperation of all state governments, central ministries, and departments, a total of 61 meetings of the various Zonal Councils and their permanent committees have been held in the last eleven years. The Zonal Councils also discuss broad issues of national importance, including the speedy investigation of cases of sexual offenses against women and children and the implementation of Fast Track Special Courts (FTSC) for their swift disposal; providing brick-and-mortar banking facilities within the designated area of every village; implementation of the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS-112); and various regional-level common interest issues such as strengthening nutrition, education, health, electricity, urban planning, and the cooperative system.
