Guilford County Schools bond dollars will only get half of priority projects done
GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) — Think back to 2020 and 2022 when you had a question on your ballot about bond dollars for the school district.
Voters approved $2 billion for Guilford County Schools to make massive and much-needed updates to its facilities.
The master plan came out in 2019. Those were pre-pandemic prices. But now, in 2025, things have changed, and there is no way the district will get all 51 of their top priority projects done with the cash they have on hand.
'The writing was kind of on the wall,' Superintendent of GCS Dr. Whitney Oakley said.
She said when they returned from the pandemic, they knew this would be tricky, but in the 2021 to 2022 school year, it really sunk in that this is the new reality of pricing.
'No one had a crystal ball about construction. I can't go to Lowe's and get a piece of wood or go to the gas station and fill up for what it cost in 2019,' Oakley said.
Now, with tariffs on the table, pricing is even more unpredictable.
'We are constantly evaluating how far those dollars will go, how we can use some strategies like replicating a building plan … If you think about the Allen Jay and Sumner that are coming up, they have the same layout, which saves in design,' Oakley said.
In the 2019 facilities master plan, there are 51 priority projects listed to use the bond dollars. But because of rising costs, Oakley said they won't get very far down that list with the $2 billion.
There are four projects no longer needed, so Oakley expects they will make it to about halfway down to project 25 on the list, which leaves about 25 projects in limbo.
'It was decades in the making, and it is going to take decades to get out … I think we need to think about how we make a more predictable stream to be able to continue to do the work because the buildings didn't get in that condition overnight,' Oakley said.
It starts with the ballot. Oakley said she wants to see bond referendums more often to keep cash flowing.
'I think putting energy and resources behind being able to say what dollars are for on the ballot increases transparency, increases accountability, and our community stands behind public education,' Oakley said.

Today, everything before project 25 should be funded. With tariff impacts, that could change.

Meta Announces Oakley-Branded AI Glasses Aimed at Athletes

They might not be exactly what initial reports had suggested, but Meta has today announced its latest smart glasses, or 'AI glasses' as it now prefers to call them, with a sports-aligned version created in partnership with Oakley. As indicated in the promo, which features a range of big-name sports stars, Meta's Oakley HSTN glasses are designed to appeal to athletes and regular folk alike. As explained by Meta: 'Oakley Meta HSTN (pronounced HOW-stuhn), based on the HSTN style of Oakley glasses, combines bold aesthetics with cutting-edge tech. Capture the action completely hands-free with the built-in camera and share your unique POV. Get pumped up with your favorite playlist, listen to podcasts and more, thanks to powerful open-ear speakers seamlessly integrated into the frames. And with an IPX4 water resistance rating, you can push yourself to the outer limits of your potential.' So the device is pretty much the same as the Ray Ban AI glasses that Meta has had on the market for some time, but with water resistance, though Meta also notes that the HSTN glasses have longer battery life, a higher resolution camera built-in, and in-activity support via Meta AI. What the new device doesn't have is additional data tracking elements, which some had suggested would be part of the new device when initial reports of the Oakley collaboration leaked back in January. Those early reports, based on limited information, suggested that Meta's athletic sunglasses would be based on Oakley's more futuristic-looking 'Sphaera' style, and would come with a single camera, in the center of the frame, in order to reduce weight. That isn't what this final launch version will be, with the variation seemingly being more about style than technical advancement, at least at this stage. Which is fine. Meta's Ray Ban glasses have been selling well, and adding an Oakley variation will no doubt also prove popular, as more people look to integrate AI into their everyday lives. And sure, Meta's AI guidance could help in improving performance through generic feedback. But it had seemed like this would be Meta's first foray into fitness tracking, and providing more in-depth performance insight through the device. Though that's probably not easy to do. A key way that fitness trackers provide feedback right now is through pulse measurement, and Meta's glasses can't do that. They could give you distance tracking, via GPS, and maybe there'll be a Strava type app made available for this purpose, and there may be other tracking elements that Meta could look to integrate into another version of the device. Though it actually seems like this element would be better facilitated by a Meta-branded smartwatch, which the company has gone back and forth on at different times, and could still be something that's on the cards for its broader wearables push. Meta last shelved its smartwatch plan back in 2022, due to broader cost-cutting, amid other complications, though it's also been working on a wrist-based control device, based on EMT, as part of its AR development push. That could still play a role in its coming AR glasses push, and maybe, that will also be an addition to its fitness-tracking elements, which could increase the utility of these new Oakley glasses in this respect. But right now, what you're really looking at is a new version of Meta's smart glasses, in a different style, in order to appeal to an alternative audience. As such, I'm not sure that they're going to 'change everything' like Patrick Mahomes claims in the video clip, but it's another expansion of Meta's evolving wearables push. Meta says that its Oakley Meta HSTN will be available for pre-order starting July 11th at a price of $US499 USD. Oakley and Meta to launch new AI glasses. What do they do?
Meta and Oakley have partnered to create new glasses that utilize artificial intelligence to serve users while they serve looks. The tech giant and the sports equipment chain unveiled their new Oakley Meta HSTN on June 20, allowing users to access assistive technology without laying a hand. With a built-in camera and open-ear speakers, the water-resistant frames will allow users to listen to a podcast, stream their favorite playlist or record a day in their life in Ultra HD (3K) footage, according to Meta. With the use of AI, users can ask Meta questions regarding weather, restaurants, culture or more. A video trailer shared by the two companies shows that users can ask "Hey Meta, how strong is the wind today?" or say "Hey Meta, take a video" to get immediate assistance. "Together with Meta, we are setting new bounds of reality," Oakley Global President Caio Amato said in a news release. "It is not only about pushing forward performance, but also about amplifying human potential as never before. And this is just the first chapter of a new era for sports." The collaborative product comes after Meta worked with Ray-Ban for its smart glasses that debuted in 2023 and have sold millions, Meta said.
