A new gecko gallery filled with rare species is opening in Brooklyn

Brooklyn's wildest new attraction has scales, sticky feet—and may be snoozing in a sweatshirt hood. Opening early next month (tentatively, the second week of May) in East Williamsburg, the Gecko Gallery will showcase NYC's largest public collection of rare and endangered geckos—around 150 of them—all inside a single 400-square-foot basement below the McKibbin Lofts at 255 McKibbin Street.
The pint-sized reptile museum is the passion project of two local biologists and lifelong animal lovers, Richie Laleh, 29, and Joseph S. Migirov, 19, who say their fascination with geckos started as kids.
'Where some people look past them, we share a common fascination,' Laleh tells Time Out. 'Geckos are some of the most diverse animals in the world.'

What began as a private collection in their Brooklyn apartments has now evolved into a public venue, following encouragement from building management to open the space to the public. Visitors can expect to see show-stealers like the nearly extinct Madagascar leaf-tailed gecko, a giant day gecko (yes, the Geico one), and a cuddly New Caledonian giant gecko named Kermit, who's been known to nap in Laleh's hoodie.
The geckos are sourced from zoos, licensed breeders and occasionally through wild rescues, with the goal of strengthening captive gene pools and promoting conservation.
'We envision a future where our efforts bring often overlooked species into the spotlight,' Laleh says.
Though small in size, the Gecko Gallery is big on mission: education, conservation and sparking a little wonder. Tickets are $20, and the duo is already booking visits from curious school groups and local colleges. With its mix of science, spectacle and pure gecko charm, this quirky basement menagerie might just become your new favorite rainy-day spot.

2025's best horror movie has just been added to Time Out's horror hall of fame

Once disregarded as low-grade schlock, horror has become one of Hollywood's most bankable genres, as well as one of its most artistically fruitful. Even so, all-time classics remain hard to come by. On Time Out's list of the 100 greatest horror movies ever made, only a select handful from the past decade have managed to claw their way in – emphasis on 'claw'. Now, however, there's a brand-new entry, and it's only a few months old. But Ryan Coogler's Sinners is simply Creed and Black Panther director has enough hits under his belt to prove himself as, arguably, the greatest blockbuster filmmaker of his generation. But breaking the box office with established IP is one thing. Doing so with a wholly original story is another, much less an original vampire blues musical period piece. A visually stunning, thematically rich tale of two twin criminals (both played by Michael B Jordan) having their plans to go straight interrupted by undead bloodsuckers, the film has earned comparisons to the likes of 1996's From Dusk Till Dawn, but in truth it's a large-scale, big-idea epic unlike any other recent blockbuster. A sensation upon release, it's proof there's still money in original stories, and we're betting it's a movie audiences will talk about for years. Sinners becomes the most recent addition to the Time Out horror canon since Coralie Fargeat's 2024 body horror The Substance.

Two London restaurants have been named in the 50 best in the world

Every year, the prestigious World's 50 Best holds a ceremony to crown the 50 very best restaurants on the planet. Earlier this month the extended list (from 51 to 100) was revealed, and two London restos featured. Now the top 50 has been unveiled at an awards ceremony in Turin. Now in its 23rd year, the 2025 list comprises eateries from 32 cities and 22 countries, with 10 new entries and four re-entries. In the ranking, two London restaurants were crowned as one of the world's 50 best in 2025. High-end Mexican restaurant Kol came in 49th place. The Michelin-starred spot in Marylebone is known for its impeccable presentation, and for making Mexican dishes with British ingredients. Helmed by ex-Noma and Noma Mexico chef Santiago Lastra, some of Kol's best-renowned dishes include a langoustine taco, and a whole grilled octopus with bone marrow. The other London restaurant to make the list was Ikoyi, coming in 15th place. According to the World's 50 Best, co-founders Jeremy Chan and Iré Hassan-Odukale have 'created a culinary style that defies categorisation'. The swish joint on the Strand blends West African and Asian spices with British vegetables, meat and fish to create a unique blind tasting menu. Stand out dishes include a refined take on jollof rice and the plantain dish, which has taken on different iterations over the years. When Time Out visited Ikoyi when it opened in 2017, we called it 'a thrilling anomaly even in London's diverse food scene'. Check out the full list on the World's 50 Best website here.
