Ensure sustainability of network investments: GSMA chief to regulators
NEW DELHI: Regulators worldwide should ensure a level-playing field and facilitate infrastructure deployment following concerns around sustainability of
network investments
in the wake of over-the-top (OTT) or mobile app-based services, a top
GSMA
executive said.

In April this year, London-based GSMA appointed Badrinath to the top GSMA executive leadership role replacing Mats Granryd.

, Messenger, Telegram, Viber and Google Talk are some of the leading mobile communication applications with operators demanding a 'fair share' from them for carrying
data traffic
on their networks.
On the contrary, OTT providers argue that telcos should be the ones paying mobile app players for pushing data traffic onto their networks. More than 70% of the data traffic on telecom networks is being generated by OTT providers alone.
Further, Badrinath said that a transparent, and future-ready regulatory framework would be essentially required, considering "fair contribution models" and shared responsibility for network resilience.
'We believe in a balanced and collaborative approach, OTT players and mobile operators both benefit from - and contribute to - the digital ecosystem,' the top GSMA executive added.
Like other nations, India does not have a policy framework or regulatory regime for OTT platforms.
The Delhi-based Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) that represents Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel, and Vodafone Idea, said that since telecom service providers and OTT communication players offer same service, a level-playing field should be ensured with the former spending huge money in spectrum purchase and network deployment.
India's telco group also advocated that players who are large traffic generators (LTG) must also pay a fair share to network service operators toward capital expenditure (capex) in putting up telecom infrastructure.
In 2023, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) released a consultation paper seeking comments from stakeholders on the regulatory mechanism for a selective ban of OTT players.
Incumbent telcos Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea (Vi) in a response to telecom watchdog, favoured a compensation model from mobile apps, for deploying and maintaining telecom networks by them that enables OTT platforms to offer seamless services to their subscribers.
Earlier, head of Asia Pacific at GSMA Julian Gorman said that "a
fair share contribution
by tech companies or OTT players would bring motivation to investors."
The mobile data traffic is expected to reach 415 million terabytes per month by 2030, growing at a CAGR of 19.8% from 2024 to 2030, according to a recent Research and Markets study.
The finding by the Dublin-based research firm attributed escalating video streaming consumption and social media content in addition to next generation or
5G networks
as key data traffic growth drivers worldwide.
Early this year, the German market reserach firm Statista in a study said that the OTT video users are likely to reach 4.9 billion by 2029.

Ahmedabad plane crash: DGCA asks Air India for details of inspections, audits since 2024, says report
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has sought flight operations inspectors to provide details of all inspections and audits conducted for Air India since 2024, sources said on Saturday. The details on the findings of the inspections and audits will have to be submitted by Sunday, they said, news agency PTI reported. The DGCA has sought these details for 2024 and 2025 (to date), in an email communication which came a day after the aviation safety regulator issued a show-cause notice to the airline for flight duty time limitations (FDTL) violations, the report citing sources said. The DGCA had also ordered removal of the airline's three senior officials from their respective roles for certain lapses. The data has been sought on planned and unplanned inspections, audit, cockpit/enroute, station facility, ramp and cabin inspection among others, as per the communication, the PTI report added. The directives come after an Air India flight from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick carrying 242 passengers and crew members crashed shortly after takeoff on June 12, killing over 270 people onboard and on the ground. The DGCA ordered Tata Group-owned Air India to remove three senior officials for lapses in crew scheduling and rostering and issued a show-cause notice to the airline for violating FDTL norms, sources said on Saturday. In its order of June 20, the DGCA noted that the three officials, including a divisional vice-president, were involved in "serious and repeated lapses, including unauthorised and non-compliant crew pairings, violation of mandatory licensing and recency norms and systemic failures in scheduling protocol and oversight". The DGCA directed the airline to initiate proceedings against these three officials without delay, the PTI report said. Air India in a statement said it has acknowledged the regulator's directive and implemented the order. "In the interim, the company's chief operations officer will provide direct oversight to the Integrated Operations Control Centre (IOCC). "Air India is committed to ensuring that there is total adherence to safety protocols and standard practices," the airline said in a statement. ARMS (Air Route Management System) is the software platform used by the airline for various operational and management tasks, including crew rostering and flight planning, among others. A total of 247 victims of the horrific June 12 Ahmedabad plane crash have been identified through DNA tests so far and 232 bodies have been handed over to their families, officials said on Saturday. The authorities have asked the families of eight victims to submit the DNA samples of another relative as the previous ones failed to match, they said. According to the report, police said the matching of DNA samples confirmed that Ahmedabad-based filmmaker Mahesh Jirawala, who was reported missing following the crash, died in the catastrophe. His mortal remains were handed over to his family. Authorities are carrying out DNA tests to establish the identity of the victims as many bodies were charred beyond recognition as the aircraft burst into flames or damaged on impact.

Trichy startups get branding support from AU incubation centre
Trichy: The state govt-funded Anna Business Incubation Research Foundation (ABIRF) has extended branding support to nine promising Trichy-based startups in various sectors to enhance their visibility. Under the Startup Brand Identity Launch programme, the foundation, which operates from Anna University Trichy campus, has extended suggestions and designed logos with brand names for the identified startups at a concessional rate. Officials said that all nine startups, which are in their early stage of their business ventures involving technology, are run by youths aged less than 32. The startups are from property technology, food, automobile, and robotics sectors. By using one of the startups nurtured by Anna incubation centre, brand logos and names for nine startups were designed by the centre. "Proper logo and brand names will enhance the startup's visibility, build brand equity, and accelerate market presence for early-stage ventures.
