As swotty Hermione Granger, she had a reputation as one of the bossiest pupils at Hogwarts.
Now that same forceful spirit is helping actress Emma Watson in her new role – coxing her Oxford college rowing eight.
Our exclusive pictures captured her yelling instructions at the New College women's third team yesterday. But unfortunately her efforts were in vain, as her crew lost three of their four races across the week.
To add insult to injury, rivals from Jesus College celebrated their victory by playing the Harry Potter theme tune – though the actress took their teasing in good spirits.
And when her team lost the last race, she remained sportsmanlike when conceding defeat, giving her Somerville College opponents the thumb-ups.
Ms Watson has been at Oxford since 2023, when she decided to take a hiatus from acting to take a master's degree in creative writing at Lady Margaret Hall.
She has since reportedly progressed to a DPhil – Oxford's version of a PhD – at New College.
As cox, the 35-year-old steered her crew along the Isis – as the Thames is called in Oxford – in the university's annual Summer Eights competition.
She wore Ray-Ban sunglasses and a white baseball cap, while her crew had donned purple face paint and tied their hair back with purple ribbons, the boat club's colours.
Crews start one-and-a-half boat lengths apart, and the aim is to catch up, or 'bump', the team ahead.
The actress's team was bumped three out of four times, meaning they narrowly missed out on the humiliation of 'spoons' – the term when a boat is bumped every day.
The performance may not have been helped by Ms Watson failing to attend the compulsory cox briefing before the competition began – as sources allege – because she was at the Cannes Film Festival.
It was a rare appearance at the event for Ms Watson, whose last film was Little Women in 2019.
While at Oxford, Ms Watson is said to be dating Kieran Brown, who just finished his doctorate at the university. They were spotted kissing at a Gail's Bakery in the city last year.
Ms Watson, who is also a Prada ambassador and co-founder of the gin brand Renais, has been at loggerheads with Harry Potter creator JK Rowling over the author's views on trans issues.
Last week a new Hermione was announced. Arabella Stanton, 11, will take over the role in the much-anticipated Harry Potter TV series for American broadcaster HBO, which is set to be filmed this summer. She previously took the title role of Matiltda on the West End stage.

Michael Palin has opened up about his grief two years on from the death of his beloved wife Helen. The Monty Python star, 82, was married to Helen for 57 years after meeting as teenagers on holiday in Suffolk. 'I can see why people say it takes two years or so before your response gradually changes,' he said. 'It becomes less about loss and more about the spirit of that person being around, so that's very nice. 'I feel less grief now, and more that I've got to keep on doing things, looking after the children we made together. He continued: 'I talk to myself as if she's there. I'll show some spectacular bit of incompetence that I know she would have found funny, then I'll hear myself saying something in the way she would have said it and I'll laugh, even though I'm the only one there. 'Imagining her being there makes me laugh.' Asked if he thought finding love again was on the cards, Michael said: 'We were a unit for so long. You can never begin to replace a relationship which lasted 60 years. 'I'm OK living on my own, then I go off to Venezuela or somewhere. I'm not moping.' On living alone, he added: 'I didn't want to be dependent on the family to come around every day. I don't cook, unfortunately. There were various areas like that where I thought I might be a bit vulnerable. 'But it turns out I'm quite good at being on my own. The other person who guides me through that is actually Helen.' Sir Michael and Helen met at the seaside town of Southwold when they were 16. They reconnected by chance in the actor's first year at Oxford University, before marrying at the age of 22. While the BBC TV director was suffering from kidney failure, Sir Michael was travelling to make documentaries about North Korea and Iraq for Channel 5 after he left the BBC in 2012. But in September, Sir Michael expressed regret over this, saying: 'I don't have regrets really. Perhaps towards the end, when I was doing the later travel journeys like North Korea. 'I don't think she particularly wanted me to go away then, but she knew that my interest in travel and other people was very deep-seated, it wasn't because I wanted to get away from home — it wasn't that at all.' The Pole To Pole author recently released a book, There And Back, of his diaries which he said helped him cope with his wife's health issues. He said: 'Helen was ill for a couple of years, so it wasn't a sudden death, and I was helping her and caring for her through a lot of pain. 'Writing this down helped me to deal with it. I needed to remember all that.' Last year the actor heartbreakingly admitted that his late wife's clothes were still hanging 'in the cupboard' as they make it feel as if she was 'still here'. Almost two years since his agonising loss, Michael told how he likes to see her belongings around their home as it reminds him of the time they spend together, with the star adding that it's the reason he will never move. Speaking in an interview with The Times, Michael said on the possibility of moving: 'I don't feel that way - at the moment, anyway. Everything around me has a story or something that reminds me of time we spent together, not in a maudlin way'. 'Just they are the props of your life. Get rid of all those props and I'd be in a different play, playing a different character. And I don't want to do that. 'I know it seems odd, but I carry on as though Helen is still here. Her clothes are still in the cupboards. I don't want to change my life, because I feel she wouldn't want that either. It's still a nice house to come back to. I feel her presence here.' After almost six decades of marriage to the love of his life, Michael went on to say that he couldn't imaging starting a relationship with anyone new as he was still 'bereft' over losing Helen. He shared: 'I shared my life with someone for so long that I find it impossible to think of sharing it in the same way with anyone else again. So in a way, I'm sort of freer.' The TV personality said he found it 'odd' with her not around, especially when coming home from the theatre or dinner and wanting to tell her about his experience. He added that he misses 'the little things' about their relationship, adding that he still finds it 'very difficult' without her - especially when it comes to cooking.

Woody Johnson signs £190m deal to buy John Textor's shares in Crystal Palace

Woody Johnson has agreed a deal to buy John Textor's stake in Crystal Palace, with a sale to the New York Jets owner likely to be ratified by the Premier League within four weeks. In a move that could be a major boost to Palace's hopes of playing in next season's Europa League, it is understood that Johnson's offer of £190m for Textor's 44.9% stake was signed on Sunday evening in the United States. The 78-year-old, who has owned the Jets since 2000 and missed out on buying Chelsea in 2022 after making a $2bn offer, mustpass the Premier League's owners' and directors' test before he can complete the purchase. But it is understood that with Palace under pressure from Uefa to comply with its regulations on multi club ownership, the league is expected to act swiftly to aid their cause. A decision on the FA Cup winners' participation in the Europa League is due this week, although it is believed this latest development will be looked on favourably by Uefa. Textor has come under ­increasing pressure from Palace's chair, Steve Parish, and the other co-owners – ­Textor's fellow Americans Josh Harris and David Blitzer – to complete the sale as quickly as possible. The four Palace co-owners were part of the delegation that attended a meeting at Uefa's headquarters in Nyon this month and argued that Textor, the majority shareholder in the French club Lyon, who have also qualified for the Europa League, does not have a decisive influence at ­Selhurst Park despite being the largest shareholder. It is expected that Johnson's arrival should clear the way for Oliver Glasner's side to take their place in the league stage. It remains to be seen whether the former US ambassador to the UK, who has made no secret of his desire to buy an English football club, has his sights on a full takeover. Harris and Blitzer, who bought stakes worth a combined 36% in 2015 and have portfolios of investments across a number of sports, are believed to be willing to sell, owing to concerns about the ballooning costs of building a new main stand, which some sources are predicting could reach up to £240m. Textor, who failed with an audacious attempt at a takeover of Palace in May in a last-ditch attempt to assume control, is understood to have been reluctant to leave the club in which he has invested about £180m since buying a 40% stake for almost £90m in August 2021. Yet he had a major falling-out with Parish, who owns just over 10% but is the executive chair of the managing company that is in charge of Palace and retains the casting vote, over resistance to embracing his Eagle Football network that also includes the South American champions Botafogo and the Belgian side Daring Brussels. Textor is expected to turn his attention to another English club. The former Palace owner Simon Jordan revealed last week that he recommended to Textor buying the Championship side Sheffield Wednesday, who were last week hit with a ban on transfer spending until 2027 last week for the repeated failure to pay players' wages. 'I was talking to John Textor the other day, and if he comes out of Palace, I was saying to him that is the football club you should be buying if you want to buy another English club,' said Jordan.
