Hyundai goes aero-mad with Pikes Peak-prepped Ioniq 5 N
There is plenty of motorsport happening today, including Formula 1 and Le Mans, but here is a look at something that takes aero to another level. Hyundai and Evasive Motorsports have prepared a bespoke Ioniq 5 N for this year's Pikes Peak International Hill Climb on Sunday.

Driving duties fall to Rob Walker, a Pikes Peak veteran who previously ran a Scion FR-S. The car has been overhauled specifically for the 103rd running of the event. Evasive Motorsports calls it their 'most ambitious EV project to date', and that's not just marketing talk. The Ioniq 5 N has dropped 227kg thanks to a fully stripped cabin and extensive use of carbon fibre. That includes new doors, a custom tailgate, and other lightweight components.
Finding race-ready parts for the Ioniq 5 N wasn't easy. With limited aftermarket support, Evasive turned to Japanese aero firm Voltex, which came up with a bespoke body kit. It includes a carbon front splitter, flared fenders, side skirts, underbody panels, and a massive rear wing — all designed to boost downforce for the high-altitude climb.
The car's upgrades go beyond aerodynamics. Krontec air jacks help with fast servicing, and 19-inch Titan wheels wrapped in Yokohama slicks provide grip. A Moton coilover suspension with prototype anti-roll bars from EVS Tuning sharpens handling. Inside, a six-point roll cage and a single Sparco carbon fibre seat take care of safety, while CSG Spec pads handle braking.

The dual-motor setup remains stock, still pushing 478kW and 769Nm to all four wheels. That's enough to get the standard Ioniq 5 N from 0–100km/h in 3.25s and on to 261km/h. 'We've come close in the past and feel it's far more achievable with the Ioniq 5 N,' said Evasive Motorsports co-president Mike Chang.

How soon could Kyalami be back on the F1 calendar?

For years, many in the Formula One world, most notably Sir Lewis Hamilton, have been calling for an African race, and for years rumours of a return to Kyalami have abounded. Now that the FIA has granted approval for Class 1 upgrades, how likely is it that the return will happen any time soon, if at all? The upgrades, estimated to cost up to R200 million, will be focused on improving track safety, as well as infrastructural improvements to accommodate the spectacle that is an F1 race. "It's not any upgrades in terms of engineering, but it's just to enhance the excellent circuit that's at Kyalami to just meet the modern F1 requirements." Kumbi Mtshakazi, Resident Motoring Enthusiast While the odds are certainly in Kyalami's favour, it faces competition both locally and from the rest of the continent. There has been huge interest in hosting a street race in Cape Town, which would follow the same route as the hugely successful Formula E race which took place in 2023. Rwanda, with its rapidly developing economy and eagerness to welcome the world, has also thrown its hat in the ring. Kyalami, though, has a proven track record, having been a regular on the calendar from 1967-1985, and again in 1992 and 1993, and already has FIA Grade 2 certification. It is also a favourite among drivers who have driven the circuit before. "Kyalami deserves this one." Resident Motoring Enthusiast, Kumbi Mtshakazi Competition for a spot on the F1 calendar is fierce, and only getting fiercer, which has led many to speculate that South Africa could wait up to ten years to see a race. Mtshakazi, though, remains optimistic that it could happen much sooner than that. The Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola, Italy, has already lost its place on the calendar, and rumours are circulating that other old-school tracks won't have their contracts renewed. Should those rumours be accurate, and more tracks lose their spots, there's a chance Kyalami could see racing action as soon as 2028 or 2029. Both Ferrari drivers, Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton hare the sentiment that the Ferrari F80 is the quickest road car they have ever been in. Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari journey is off to a flying start — quite literally. The seven-time Formula 1 world champion, who recently joined the Scuderia, has already had his hands on the steering wheel of the company's most powerful road car to date: the Ferrari F80. Not long after his first day at Maranello — where he posed beside the iconic F40, Enzo Ferrari's final signed-off creation — Hamilton made headlines again by expressing a desire to one day bring a modern homage to life, rumoured to be called the 'F44'. But while that project brews in the background, Hamilton is clearly wasting no time enjoying what's already on offer. Invited by Ferrari to drive the F80 around the Fiorano test circuit, Hamilton joined current teammate Charles Leclerc for a high-speed session in the hybrid hypercar. And the verdict? As expected, glowing. 'Fastest road car I've ever been in,' the Brit enthused — quite the statement from someone who's piloted the Mercedes-AMG One, a car built with Formula 1 tech and a Nürburgring lap record under its belt. Clearly impressed, Hamilton even hinted at adding the F80 to his personal garage: 'Okay, I've got to order me some of these one day.' With only 799 examples planned and reportedly already spoken for, one would imagine Ferrari might still make a plan for its newest star signing. 'This is another level,' he added, calling it 'the fastest road car Ferrari has done.' Leclerc, meanwhile, is no stranger to the F80. The Monégasque driver was part of the hypercar's launch campaign, having previously driven it at Fiorano shortly after its official reveal. Before his departure from the team, Carlos Sainz Jr. also sampled a camouflaged prototype and gave it his stamp of approval. Now racing for Williams, the Spaniard was one of the first to get a taste of the electrified machine. As for Hamilton, despite owning a Pagani Zonda (which he once described as 'terrible to drive' but praised for its soundtrack), the V6-powered F80 appears to have left a far greater impression — both in performance and refinement. Volvo's Electric EX30 Cross Country confirmed for SA
Volvo Car South Africa has confirmed that the EX30 Cross Country will arrive locally in the third quarter of 2025. Built on the standard model, this will serve as a tougher, more rugged counterpart. Looking for a new or used Volvo? Find it here with CARmag! The Cross Country badge, first used on the V70 back in 1997, returns here with an off-road-inspired makeover. Volvo has given the EX30 a raised ride height (19mm higher than the standard EX30), chunkier body cladding, and 19-inch five-spoke wheels finished in Matte Graphite with black aero inserts. Other design tweaks help the Cross Country stand out from the standard EX30. The front shield and boot lid wear a darker finish, and model-specific artwork on the front end takes inspiration from Sweden's Kebnekaise mountain range. Skid plates and wheel arch extensions complete the rugged aesthetic. South African buyers will get the Cross Country in the Ultra Twin Performance trim only. That means a fully loaded cabin with a heated steering wheel, panoramic sunroof, power-adjustable front seats, and a long list of safety and driver assistance features over 15 in total, including Pilot Assist and a 360-degree camera. Volvo will also offer accessories like mudflaps, a roof basket, and a load carrier for added versatility. The 69kWh battery pack offers a claimed WLTP range of 427km. Fast-charging capability means a 10 to 80% top-up takes just 26 minutes with a suitable DC fast charger. 'The EX30 Cross Country builds on everything people love about the EX30, adding rugged capability and distinctive design details,' said Felipe Yagi, Volvo Car South Africa's head of marketing and communications. 'It's a refined, all-electric SUV that feels equally at home on gravel roads or in the city, offering South Africans a practical way to go further with confidence.' The arrival of the EX30 Cross Country highlights Volvo's ongoing shift to electrification, with the brand aiming for battery-electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles to make up nearly all global sales by 2030.
