Columbus Crew snap 6-game winless streak, defeat Vancouver Whitecaps: Takeaways

Yahoo6 days ago

Returning to action two weeks after a 5-1 loss to Inter Miami, the Crew looked to prove their most recent result was an anomaly.
They did so against the Vancouver Whitecaps.
The Crew defeated Vancouver 2-1 at Lower.com Field on June 14, snapping a six-game winless streak. Columbus' previous victory was a 4-2 win over Charlotte FC on May 3.

"We deserved more wins, but we didn't do it," Crew coach Wilfried Nancy said. "I'm happy for the players because obviously they were not happy regarding the last game. The spirit and the intensity during practice was really up. Tonight, they showed that."
Replay: Diego Rossi, Daniel Gazdag connect to lead Columbus Crew to win vs Whitecaps
Going up against the Western Conference's top team, the Crew (8-3-7) swung the momentum in their direction early. Forward Ibrahim Aliyu scored just 1:08 into the matchup, recording the second-fastest regular-season goal in club history.
The Whitecaps (10-2-5) responded 5 minutes later with a goal from midfielder Jean-Claude Ngando, but the Crew remained focused on keeping the game within their control.

In the 23rd minute, forward Diego Rossi put the Crew ahead to stay, scoring his team-leading ninth goal of the regular season.
Crew forward Ibrahim Aliyu dribbles the ball past Nashville SC midfielder Edvard Tagseth in the first half of their MLS game May 28 at Lower.com Field.
Rossi's goal came on his only shot of the game, with the team taking only eight shots overall. The Crew averaged 14.5 shots over the previous six games, in which they averaged only 1.5 goals.
"The way we built the action, it was interesting," Nancy said. "It puts more doubt on the opposition like this. Again, it was a good game tonight, and against a good team."
Daniel Gazdag gets first assist with Columbus Crew vs Vancouver Whitecaps
In forward Daniel Gazdag's first nine games with the Crew after being traded from the Philadelphia Union, the 29-year-old had failed to have a goal contribution, as his offensive struggles mirrored those of the entire Crew lineup.

Against the Whitecaps, Gazdag recorded his first Crew assist by capitalizing on an error.
In the lead-up to Rossi's goal, Gazdag gained control of the ball when Vancouver forward Daniel Rios overpowered a pass on his side of the field. Off the turnover, Gazdag quickly found Rossi inside the box.
"He was involved – obviously not goals or assists like today – but before the assist," Nancy said. "Like I said, I'm not concerned by Daniel. He just needed a bit of time. Tonight, it was a coherent game regarding Daniel. ... This is only the beginning."
Knowing the struggles he'd gone through in May, Gazdag felt the importance of getting onto the stat sheet for the first time in Columbus, while also helping the Crew break the cycle of poor finishing.

"It was a tough month," Gazdag said. "We didn't win games, so we've been very hard on ourselves. I was really hard on myself as well. I'm here to help the team win games. So, I was obviously disappointed last month, and we wanted to show that we are a good team, and we wanted to get the three points at home."

Columbus Crew have three goals called back for offside in second half
In the second half, the Crew looked to have scored their third goal with the ball finding the back of the net on three different occasions, all resulting in an offside call.
Mo Farsi was the first to be charged with the call following a VAR review that confirmed the midfielder was offside before forward Aziel Jackson scored.

Offside calls against Farsi and defender Andres Herrera were clear, according to Nancy. It was an offside against Aliyu when receiving a pass from Jackson that Nancy felt was called too quickly and deserved another look during the game.
"I couldn't believe it," Aliyu said. "I need to check again because I saw when Aziel had a ball, I saw the defenders. I don't know how (it was offside)."
Wilfried Nancy finds success in starting lineup adjustments
The Crew went with a new starting lineup against the Whitecaps, as multiple players were unavailable due to injury and the CONCACAF Gold Cup, while others had just returned from playing with their national team.

Goalkeeper Evan Bush made his second start of the season and became the oldest player to start a game for Columbus at 39 years, 100 days old.
Starting at the wingbacks were Aliyu and Lassi Lappalainen. Both made key impacts in the game despite Aliyu having little experience at the position.
For Lappalainen, it was his first start with Columbus after dealing with multiple injuries since joining the team in the offseason.
"The medical staff and (fitness coach) Jules (Gueguen) did really good work with Lassi," Nancy said. "Also, Lassi helped himself to push, to push, to push. Good for him. I know him, I know what he can bring. I'm not surprised that he had a good first half because this is him when he's fit."

Terence Crawford makes bold claim ahead of Canelo Alvarez fight

Terence Crawford has warned Canelo Alvarez that he plans to be the first man to knock him out when they meet in their blockbuster fight later this year. The pound-for-pound greats will fight on 13 September in Las Vegas for Alvarez's undisputed super-middleweight world title. Advertisement Some are billing the bout as the "fight of the century" with the undefeated, four-division world champion Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) stepping up from light-middleweight to take on the Mexican great. There are questions about whether his power will travel up the divisions and Canelo (63-2-2, 39 KOs) has never yet been knocked out in a professional career spanning 20 years. Jose Cotto rocked him with a first-round left hook early in his career back in 2010, while he has survived notorious power punchers such as Gennadiy Golovkin, Sergey Kovalev and Dmitry Bivol, although he did lose a decision to the latter. Yet Crawford is adamant he can end the 34-year-old's streak. 'Anybody can be knocked out,' Crawford said during a press conference to promote the fight in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. 'Canelo's got a granite chin, he's tough, he's durable. But we've seen him hurt a couple of times and given the right circumstances, anybody can get knocked out.' Advertisement There are some in the boxing world who believe Canelo has been given the rub of the green by judges when previously competing in Vegas but the unbeaten American isn't worried about that. 'I can't focus on the judges,' added Crawford. 'I just gotta focus on doing what I can do and controlling what I can control inside the ring. And that's going out there and winning the fight decisively.' Canelo Alvarez will put his undisputed super-middleweight title on the line (Getty Images) Crawford is considered by many, including The Independent, to be the No 1 pound-for-pound boxer in the world but the 37-year-old believes this super-fight in Vegas will be the pinnacle of his career. 'I called Canelo out, he is the last great fighter amongst the era that surpassed us,' explained Crawford 'The Floyd [Mayweather], the [Manny] Pacquiao, the [Oscar] De La Hoya. We both came up in that era and he got the chance to fight them. Advertisement "I wasn't able to get those mega fights, this is my mega fight. This is my moment. 'Over the last 20 years [in terms of biggest fights], I can definitely say it's up there. 'Me and Canelo are definitely making this event as massive as possible, given the body of work that he's put in the sport and the body of work that I've put in the sport. "The accomplishments that he has, the accomplishments that I have in the sport. When you look at it, we did this together with the work that he did and the work that I did. "Everything is up for grabs. Three-time undisputed, three different weight classes, going up two weight divisions. An undefeated fighter in the 168 division in Canelo Alvarez. Another all-time great, Hall of Famer in Canelo Alvarez. Everything is on the line in this fight.' Alvarez and Crawford will fight for the gold in a hugely anticipated bout (REUTERS) For his part, Canelo was equally confident of coming out on top – making a point of acknowledging his opponent's impressive record without being overawed by it. Advertisement 'He's a great fighter but he's not Canelo. I have the experience," Canelo said. "They only focus on my power but I have more than that. This fight is going to be one of my best fights on my record. 'He's not going to beat me, don't worry about it.' That drew a laugh and a smile from Crawford, who replied: 'For sure them belts are coming home with me.'

Commanders Reveal Injury Update on ‘Dog-Ass Competitor Noah Brown

Commanders Reveal Injury Update on 'Dog-Ass Competitor Noah Brown originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Washington Commanders at one time were thought to have suffered a major blow to their receiving corps after a key piece in the rotation went down during minicamp. Advertisement Multiple outlets reported out of the team's recent practice that Noah Brown went down with an injury and had to be carted off the field. There have been no official updates on the nature of the injury at this time. But … John Keim from ESPN has revealed that he is of the understanding that Brown's injury isn't of a serious nature. This injury came on the heels of Terry McLaurin's holdout from team activities becoming official as he seeks out a contract extension. McLaurin did not report to mandatory minicamp. Brown - labeled by coach Dan Quinn a 'dog-ass competitor' - caught 35 passes for 453 yards last season, the most notable of which came in the Commanders' stunning Hail Mary victory over the Chicago Bears. He spent five of his previous six seasons with the Dallas Cowboys before signing with the Houston Texans in 2023. Advertisement Washington has pieced together notable wide receiver depth through the offseason. The team drafted Jaylin Lane in the fourth round after adding Deebo Samuel through trade in March and signing veterans Michael Gallup and K.J. Osborn. However, Brown's loss would've been a considerable blow if the injury turned out to be a serious matter. The Commanders have centered their offseason on building a formidable offensive unit around Jayden Daniels. Brown's rapport with the young quarterback was a major plus as a returning piece. … and soon enough apparently will be again. Coveted Playmaker Delivers Unclear Message on Georgia Ahead of SEC Visit

Coveted Playmaker Delivers Unclear Message on Georgia Ahead of SEC Visit originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Georgia Bulldogs appear to be the favorite for one in-state highly touted receiver. But the recruitment is far from finished even with his commitment day less than a week away. Advertisement Four-star wide receiver Craig Dandridge indicated in a conversation with On3's Jeremy Johnson this week that he is truly undecided and keeping an open mind with every official visit. Dandridge will visit the Oklahoma Sooners this weekend. The receiver stressed he has liked the recruiting process. 'I mean, a lot of people wanna say like, they're like really pressured with all the thoughts, but, I'm just enjoying it all, man,' Dandridge said. 'I really took the time to like, just think like, I'm blessed to be in this situation at all. Being able to pick from these top schools, I can't go wrong.' Georgia Bulldogs football head coach Kirby Smart© Stephen Lew-Imagn Images While that's a great attitude to have, it's not necessary what the Bulldogs want to hear. Advertisement That's especially true of Dandridge's conclusion that he "can't go wrong" with his recruitment decision. The Bulldogs would prefer the Milton (Ga) Cambridge wideout feel that any choice but Georgia is the wrong one. Dandridge has a few more days to decide. The receiver will announce his commitment decision on June 26. Oklahoma will be the last school Dandridge visits before that commitment day. In addition to Georgia and Oklahoma, the receiver is also considering the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets, Tennessee Volunteers and Stanford Cardinal according to Johnson. The 247Sports Composite rankings rated Dandridge the No. 38 receiver and 26th Georgia prospect in the 2026 recruiting class. Advertisement Additionally, Dandridge is the No. 237 overall recruit in 2026. On3's Recruiting Prediction Machine projected Georgia as having a 35.6% chance of receiving a commitment from Dandridge.
