Health News: More Women Opting to Freeze Eggs Amid Health, Lifestyle, and Career Challenges
Declining quality of life due to lifestyle changes and environmental factors is not only impacting overall health but also affecting fertility, especially at a later age. Considering this, more women today are exploring the option of freezing their eggs for having a healthy baby in the future.
Shiba Vyas, a 28 years old software engineer, recently froze her eggs. 'I want to become a mother but in the future and not now. However, I came across information that the quality of eggs lessens with time. And aspects like the modern lifestyle that is full of junk food, smoking, and drinking alcohol affect eggs quality negatively. Hence, I decided to freeze my eggs,' she said.
Vyas is not alone. More and more women, mostly from metro cities and working women, prefer to freeze their eggs for various reasons.
What is egg freezing?
Dr Rajendra Shitole, Clinical and Academic Head, DPU IVF and Endoscopy Centre (DPU Super Specialty Hospital, Pimpri), said, 'Egg freezing, or oocyte cryopreservation, is a fertility preservation technique that allows women to store their eggs at a younger age for future use. With shifting priorities and evolving lifestyles, more women today are choosing to delay motherhood—for education, career, or medical reasons.'
Dr Bushra Khan, fertility specialist, says, 'Egg freezing is done for two reasons: social and medical. Social is when younger women want to delay their pregnancies. For healthy eggs, they store it. And medical is when women have cancer or other diseases. Before taking chemotherapy, they freeze their eggs as chemotherapy affects negatively on eggs. Women with a family history of early menopause also go for it. We receive 7-10 queries per month and 7-8 women opt for it per month,' said Dr Khan.
The perfect time to freeze eggs
The best time to freeze eggs is before 35, when egg quality is highest. The process involves hormonal stimulation for 10–12 days, followed by egg retrieval under mild sedation with a sonography machine. The mature eggs are then vitrified and stored for ten years safely in liquid nitrogen.
'Success depends on age at freezing and the number of eggs stored. Egg survival after freezing is almost 90% due modern vitrification techniques. With eggs frozen before 35, the chances of a healthy pregnancy can be up to 40–60% per embryo transfer. Research shows no increased risk of birth defects or developmental issues in children born from frozen eggs,' says Dr Shitole.
Myths busted
'There are many myths around egg freezing. It is said that egg freezing guarantees future pregnancy. However, in reality, it increases the chances, but success still depends on several factors. Another myth is the procedure is unsafe. But in reality, it is well-established and minimally invasive,' said Dr Khan.
According to both experts, this is not a new technique and has been used in western world for a long time. But now it is becoming popular in India, especially in metro cities. It costs Rs 1.50 lakh to Rs 2.50 lakh and is affordable for many middle-class families.

Priyanka Khade (name changed), 27 years old working woman, recently tested with breast cancer. 'I want to become a mother for sure. Doctors counselled me about why I needed to freeze my eggs. And I realised that chemotherapy might reduce my chances to become a mother as egg quality gets reduced due to therapy. Hence, I decided to freeze my eggs.'

Uttarakhand CM Dhami announces India's first Yoga Policy in Gairsain
Dehradun, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami on Saturday announced a Yoga Policy for Uttarakhand on the occasion of 11th International Yoga Day making it the first state in the country to frame such a policy. Making the announcement in Uttarakhand's summer capital Gairsain in the presence of a host of foreign dignitaries, Dhami said the policy is aimed at developing the state into a global wellness destination. The chief minister said that a subsidy of up to Rs 20 lakh would be given under this policy for establishing yoga and wellness centres besides a grant of up to Rs 10 lakh for research in the field of yoga, meditation and naturopathy. Under the Yoga Policy 2025, which is the country's first, Dhami said that his government is determined to establish five new yoga hubs in Uttarakhand by 2030. By March 2026, the availability of yoga services will also be ensured in all AYUSH Health and Wellness Centers in the state, he added. Live Events The chief minister also announced that two spiritual cities, one each in Kumaon and Garhwal regions of the state, would be developed under the policy. "Making Uttarakhand the global capital of yoga and wellness is our commitment," he said. Describing yoga as a natural system of healing, Dhami said it establishes complete harmony between the mind, soul and body. "Yoga keeps our body healthy and provides inner peace, mental balance and spiritual stability to human life. Yoga helps in reducing stress. With various yoga asanas and pranayama, the body and mind can be freed from stress. Apart from increasing the concentration of the mind, yoga also releases positive energy in life," he said. The chief minister released a booklet on the state's Yoga Policy. He also planted an apple sapling in the Vidhan Sabha premises at Bhararisain in Gairsain under the program "Ek Vriksha, Yoga Ke Naam". The Uttarakhand government will soon establish one Spiritual Economic Zone each in Garhwal and Kumaon divisions to promote ayurveda and naturopathy, yoga and spiritual tourism in the state. We are going to establish two new cities in the mountainous areas of the state which will establish the state's special identity on the global map by becoming the center of yoga, ayurveda and spirituality, said Dhami. Eminent spiritual gurus, yogic experts and institutions working in the field of wellness from all over the world will be invited to the two cities, he added. The chief minister said apart from being the summer capital, Gairsain (Bhararisain) is also a centre of rich cultural heritage and amazing natural beauty. A collective yoga practice done with the representatives of eight friendly nations at the event will prove to be an important step towards making Devbhoomi Uttarakhand the global capital of yoga and spirituality, he added. Telangana HC seeks explanation over delay in opening government hospital
HYDERABAD: The Telangana High Court on Wednesday pulled up the state government for the inordinate delay in making operational a fully constructed and equipped 100-bedded government hospital in Alampur, Jogulamba Gadwal district. The court directed the government to file its response within two weeks, explaining the reasons for not commencing regular medical services at the facility. A division bench comprising Acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul and Justice Renuka Yara expressed serious concern over the continued inaction, questioning why the hospital - built at a cost of Rs 21 crore and completed in October 2023 - remains non-functional even 18 months after completion. During the hearing, Acting Chief Justice Sujoy Paul observed, 'A 100-bedded hospital has been constructed in Alampur, but the state government is not opening it, not providing staff, and the equipment remains unused.' The Bench directed the government counsel to obtain clear instructions from relevant departments on the reasons for the delay. The directive came in response to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by social activist and politician S Ramchandra Reddy, a resident of Ieeja in Jogulamba Gadwal district. The petitioner alleged that despite several representations to the authorities, the hospital has not been made functional, depriving the people of Alampur of basic medical services.
