'My granddaughter died at three days old, now I'm running in her memory'
A man is running 10k to raise funds for the hospital that treated his granddaughter who died when she was three days old.
Mick Haigh, 68, from Apperley Bridge in Bradford, is running the Leeds 10k with his four grandsons to raise money for Bradford Hospitals Charity.
His granddaughter Alice was born in December 2018 and was treated at Bradford Royal Infirmary's neonatal unit.
"Running in memory of Alice on Father's Day will be really special, and having my grandsons by my side as we cross the finish line in her memory will be emotional for sure - it'll certainly be a race I won't forget," he said.
The family are running under the team name Alice's Army and hope to raise money to support the charity to refurbish and expand the neonatal unit.
Alice's parents Cara and Lee Haigh began fundraising in 2023, when the family ran their first Leeds 10k, raising £2,000.
This year four of Mick's grandsons – and Cara and Lee's nephews - Elliot Ratcliffe, Thomas Ratcliffe, Owen Davies and Ryan Davies, are running for the first time.
Mr Haigh said despite it being their first time he expected they would be waiting for him at the finish line.
"In my younger days, when I was my grandsons' age, I did the Leeds Marathon three times.
"We've been training along the canal, which is pretty flat, because the course itself isn't that bad.
"The last bit coming into Little London from Meanwood Road. That's the hard part.
"We'll save ourselves for that."
The family's first 10k in 2023 was timed to mark what would have been Alice's fifth birthday.
"It was quite fitting for us to take part in that run," said Cara Haigh.
"We wanted to give something back. They do such an amazing job and such vital work that we wanted to try and raise a bit of money."
The hospital's BIG Neonatal Appeal will support the refurbishment and expansion of the unit, allowing families to stay closer to their babies during treatments.
It will also help fund a garden where families can reflect and relax and an indoor play area for siblings.
Mrs Haigh said it had "meant the world" to have time with Alice in the room provided by the charity, and wanted to ensure other families could benefit from the support.
"I had never been on a neonatal unit. I hadn't seen babies that were poorly being cared for. And it really opened my eyes up and my husband Lee's eyes up to just what exactly they do.
"They go above and beyond for every child to try to get them home to their family."
She said "unfortunately that wasn't the ending" of their story.
"But they work so hard to make these children better so that they can go on and live happy and healthy lives."

Gareth Bale leading consortium to buy Cardiff City
Gareth Bale is leading a consortium that has made an approach to buy Cardiff City. Bale's group sent a letter of intent to Cardiff owner Vincent Tan last month, which expressed their desire to purchase the Welshman's hometown club and included financial numbers. The proposal was rejected but interest from the former Real Madrid winger in Cardiff remains strong — whereas he is not in the frame to acquire Plymouth Argyle, despite recent reports. Cardiff declined to comment. Advertisement Cardiff were mooted as a possible destination for Bale, 35, in 2022 after he left Real Madrid but he signed for LAFC instead, where he made 14 appearances before retiring after the World Cup in Qatar. The Welshman's potential involvement in Cardiff comes after his former Tottenham Hotspur and Madrid team-mate Luka Modric became a co-owner of their south Wales rivals Swansea City earlier this month. Bale, who announced his retirement as a player in January 2023, would be the latest big name to attach themselves to an ownership group of a team in the English Football League. NFL legend Tom Brady became Birmingham City's minority owner in August 2023, while American golfers Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas bought shares in Leeds United before their promotion to the Premier League in May. Cardiff have been a Premier League side as recently as 2018-19 but finished bottom of the Championship last season, two points off Plymouth in 23rd, recording only nine wins. Head coach Omer Riza was sacked in April and replaced on an interim basis by Bale's former international team-mate Aaron Ramsey, though he could not change their fortunes. Brian Barry-Murphy has been appointed head coach ahead of the 2025-26 season, as Cardiff prepare for their first campaign in the English third tier since 2003.

Town's move for Grimsby winger hits late roadblock
Swindon Town's move for Grimsby Town winger Charles Vernam looks to be in jeopardy after a breakdown in negotiations. As reported by The Adver this week, Swindon were involved in negotiations to take Vernam from their League Two rivals as Ian Holloway looked to add a new option to his attacking arsenal. Advertisement However, the 28-year-old was set to travel to Swindon yesterday to complete his medical and iron out all of the details, but this ended up bringing about complications, and any further actions were abruptly cancelled. No agreement ended up being reached, as first reported by The Moonraker, as the winger decided against moving his family down from their base in Lincolnshire, having learned about the move after a deal between the two clubs had already been struck. Vernam was born in Lincoln and has played for both Grimsby and Lincoln City, and has pursuits beyond football in his local area, which he has decided not to leave behind to reunite with Holloway. The pair worked together whilst the 62-year-old was in charge of The Mariners, arguably the best spell of Vernam's career as he scored seven goals in 27 appearances in the 2019/20 season, scoring the EFL Goal of the Season and earning a move to Burton Albion. Advertisement The winger is likely to remain available this summer as Dave Artell looks to streamline his current group, so if issues can be fixed, then it is not impossible that Swindon revisit it at a later date. Holloway had been hoping that Vernam could fill the void in his attacking options of a natural winger, who is capable of taking players on and getting the ball into the box. Town's boss is a big fan of the 28-year-old from his time at Grimsby, saying of him when he was in charge at Blundell Park: 'Charles Vernam is looking beautiful. One of his turns there, the kid went and bought a haddock and chips – or a pie, whatever he eats – he sold him such a dummy it was unbelievable! 'It was like 'Hang on, where's he gone?' And it's beautiful." Advertisement Swindon are still searching for at least two more attacking reinforcements, in addition to Aaron Drinan, whose new contract was expected to be signed this week, as Holloway hopes to fill up his attacking options. Having strength in depth in attack was a big part of Swindon's success last season, with the "starters and finishers" policies allowing them to pull multiple improbably late comebacks over the likes of AFC Wimbledon and Bradford City. Vernam, it was hoped, would have been part of that, but Swindon will have to return to their list of options to find a new player capable of filling that hole, on top of a back-up striker, which is coveted by Holloway. In attacking areas of Town's 24-man squad, Town presently have Paul Glatzel, Danny Butterworth, Botan Ameen, and Harry Smith signed up for next season, with Dani Gonzalez and George Alston expected to gain more experience away from the Nigel Eady County Ground next season.
