Egypt advances integrated waste management city in 10th of Ramadan with World Bank support

Egypt's Minister of Environment, Yasmine Fouad, and Minister of Local Development, Manal Awad, convened a joint meeting to review the progress of Egypt's first fully integrated waste management city, currently under construction in 10th of Ramadan City. The project is a key component of the World Bank-financed 'Cairo Greater Air Pollution and Climate Change Management Project.'
The meeting, held at the Ministry of Environment headquarters in the New Administrative Capital, brought together senior officials from relevant ministries, World Bank representatives, and technical teams from the Ministries of Housing and Urban Communities.
Fouad described the project as a 'model city' designed to handle all types of solid waste generated in the East Nile region, including Cairo, Qalyubeya, and surrounding new urban communities. She noted that the site is expected to serve as a strategic environmental facility for the next 30 years and is being developed in accordance with international best practices and governance standards.
She added that over 65% of the project has been completed to date, with infrastructure construction—carried out by a private-sector contractor—reaching 80%. Once complete, the facility will be managed by the private sector.
Minister Awad underscored the project's national and regional significance, calling it 'the first of its kind in Egypt and the Middle East.' She commended the World Bank for its financial and technical support and emphasised the importance of maintaining construction timelines while ensuring strong private sector participation in waste treatment and landfill operations.
Spanning 1,228 feddans, the site will include specialised zones for various types of waste: 212 feddans designated for municipal waste from Cairo, 106 feddans for Qalyubeya, and additional areas for medical, industrial, and construction waste. Supporting infrastructure includes internal roads, perimeter fencing, and utilities such as water, electricity, and telecommunications networks.
The project forms part of Egypt's broader strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance air quality across the Greater Cairo Region, and advance the objectives of the country's 'Egypt Vision 2030' sustainable development agenda.

2nd tagged sea turtle from Greece successfully rescued, released in Alexandria

A tagged sea turtle originating from Greece - press photo CAIRO – 21 June 2025: The Turtle Rescue Center at the Lake Burullus Protected Area of Ashtoum El Gamil has successfully carried out the second-of-its-kind rescue and release operation for a tagged sea turtle originating from Greece. The turtle was safely released into the Mediterranean off the coast of Alexandria, after confirming its full recovery and ability to survive in its natural habitat. The operation was conducted in cooperation with the Alexandria branch of the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency, the Sea Turtle Rescue Center in Greece, and the Alexandrian Association for Marine Rescue and Environmental Protection, as part of Egypt's celebration of World Sea Turtle Day. Minister of Environment Yasmine Fouad confirmed that the turtle is a juvenile loggerhead (Caretta caretta), a marine species classified as threatened with extinction. She noted that the turtle was found to be in good health, with all vital functions stable before release. It was tagged with the Greek codes L4728 and L4727, and coordination with the Greek rescue center helped retrieve its environmental history. Fouad explained that the turtle is named Taito, a young female estimated to be under 15 years old. She was admitted to the Greek rescue center in May 2023 after suffering a head injury, and was subsequently released off the coast of Attica, Greece, in October 2024. The minister added that the turtle was transferred from Alexandria on Friday and released into the Mediterranean Sea today, after her health was reassessed and scientific measurements were recorded: the shell measured 63 cm in length and 57 cm in width; the front flipper was 34 cm long, the rear flipper 23 cm, and the head measured 17 cm in length and 15 cm in width. The turtle weighed approximately 40 kilograms. Fouad emphasized that this operation is part of the Ministry of Environment's broader efforts to preserve biodiversity and protect endangered marine species, highlighting the importance of regional and international cooperation to safeguard marine life and enhance rapid response and rehabilitation efforts.

UN Hails Egypt's National Climate Dialogue as Model for Inclusive Action

Ahmed Emam The United Nations has commended Egypt for launching a nationwide climate dialogue, describing the initiative as a progressive and inclusive step that strengthens the country's role in global climate leadership. The National Social Dialogue on Climate Change was unveiled by the Ministry of Environment during a high-level event marking World Environment Day. In her address at the launch, UN Resident Coordinator in Egypt, Elena Panova, praised the initiative as a bold move that places the voices of citizens at the center of climate policy. 'This is a clear signal that those affected by climate change must be central to shaping the solutions,' Panova said, echoing a message from UN Secretary-General António Guterres: 'We are not only in danger — we are also the danger. But we are also the solution.' Panova highlighted Egypt's growing commitment to sustainable development, citing milestones such as the National Climate Change Strategy 2050, its Vision 2030 roadmap, and its successful hosting of the COP27 climate summit in Sharm El-Sheikh. She described these efforts as evidence of a country that is not only responding to the climate crisis, but doing so with clarity of vision and determination. She also congratulated Egypt's Environment Minister, Dr. Yasmine Fouad, on her recent appointment as Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification — a role Panova said reflects Egypt's increasing influence in international environmental governance. She credited Fouad's leadership for embedding climate priorities into the heart of Egypt's development agenda, particularly through her chairing of the national Climate Change Committee under the Prime Minister's office. Panova noted that the new dialogue initiative will engage local communities across Egypt, ensuring that climate strategies reflect the concerns and needs of those most directly impacted. She emphasized the UN's full support, adding that the process is already benefiting from a wide-ranging collaboration involving multiple UN agencies and Egyptian stakeholders. One of the dialogue's guiding tools will be the Climate Change Perception Survey, conducted under the leadership of researcher Dr. Magued Osman. The survey captured public attitudes toward climate issues and will help shape the discussions taking place across 18 governorates. Panova emphasized that real solutions will emerge from the people themselves, not from distant policymakers. 'Policies written in air-conditioned offices cannot solve a crisis that unfolds under the blazing sun,' she said. 'The answers lie with those living the reality of climate change.' She concluded by reaffirming the United Nations' partnership with Egypt, stressing that the UN stands not as a leader or instructor, but as a supporter and amplifier of national efforts. 'This dialogue builds on the legacy of Sharm El-Sheikh,' Panova said. 'It reminds us that climate justice begins by listening — and that's the path to a more resilient and sustainable future.' read more Gold prices rise, 21 Karat at EGP 3685 NATO's Role in Israeli-Palestinian Conflict US Expresses 'Strong Opposition' to New Turkish Military Operation in Syria Shoukry Meets Director-General of FAO Lavrov: confrontation bet. nuclear powers must be avoided News Iran Summons French Ambassador over Foreign Minister Remarks News Aboul Gheit Condemns Israeli Escalation in West Bank News Greek PM: Athens Plays Key Role in Improving Energy Security in Region News One Person Injured in Explosion at Ukrainian Embassy in Madrid News China Launches Largest Ever Aircraft Carrier News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Sports Neymar Announced for Brazil's Preliminary List for 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers News Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly Inaugurates Two Indian Companies Arts & Culture New Archaeological Discovery from 26th Dynasty Uncovered in Karnak Temple Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies News Flights suspended at Port Sudan Airport after Drone Attacks News Shell Unveils Cost-Cutting, LNG Growth Plan
