HAWANA 2025 Strengthens Nation's Journalism Legacy

KUALA LUMPUR, June 14 (Bernama) -- The National Journalists' Day (HAWANA) 2025, held successfully today, demonstrates the media's continued commitment to elevating the journalism profession to greater heights.
Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) chief executive officer Datin Paduka Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin said the successful organisation of the fifth edition of HAWANA was the result of seven months of meticulous planning by Bernama staff, with the support of various parties.
'Alhamdulillah, I am grateful that our efforts over the past seven months to ensure the smooth execution of this event have paid off. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to all Bernama staff and strategic partners for their cooperation and support, particularly in terms of sponsorship.
'The full attendance at Dewan Merdeka today reflects the success of the HAWANA programme and the strong support it has received from members of the media,' she said when met after the HAWANA 2025 highlight celebration at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) here today.
Carrying the theme 'Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics', HAWANA 2025 is organised by the Ministry of Communications through Bernama as the implementing agency.
About 1,000 media practitioners from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Japan, Kuwait and China have converged in the federal capital since Friday for the HAWANA 2025 celebration.
Commenting on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's speech when officiating the event, Nur-ul Afida said the emphasis on the understanding of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology and journalism ethics was timely.
'As I often stress, we cannot afford to set aside technology, as it is intended to assist us in the field of journalism. Be it journalists, editors or graphic designers, all can benefit from AI according to their respective needs.
'But at the same time, we as humans cannot rely entirely on AI. Use it as a tool to achieve your goals, not as a shortcut,' she said.

UM Crowned Champion Of 31st Environmental Debate Competition
SERI ISKANDAR, June 22 (Bernama) -- Universiti Malaya (UM) emerged as the champion of the 31st Environmental Debate Competition held at Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP) here tonight, defeating 28 other institutions of higher learning. Represented by four debaters – Azhad Hafiz Md Razip Han, 22, Khairul Nur Ayuni Rodzan Khairul, 22, Aiesya Salsabila Mohd Radzuan, 23, and Ali Hydar Hafizi, 23 – UM took home the challenge trophy, accompanying trophy, RM12,000 cash prize, and certificates of participation. Although his team finished as runner-up, Ahmad Idzhad Hamzie, 21, a second-year Petroleum Engineering student, was named Best Debater and awarded a cash prize of RM2,000. Azhad Hafiz described the win as a hard-earned triumph, marking the team's long-awaited success after coming in second place in 2019. "Back in 2019, we reached the final but only managed to be runners-up. This year, Alhamdulillah, we proved that UM can be champions,' he told Bernama. He added that environmental debate posed a unique challenge, requiring in-depth knowledge and understanding of issues to construct strong arguments. UTP secured second place and received an accompanying trophy, RM7,000, and certificates, while Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) came in third, winning RM2,000, a trophy, and certificates. The prizes were presented by deputy secretary-general of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES), Datuk Nor Yahati Awang. Also present were UTP provost Datuk Ir Dr Mohamed Ibrahim Abdul Mutalib, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu (UMT) deputy vice-chancellor (Student Affairs and Alumni) Professor Dr Mohd Izani Mohd Zain, who also chairs the University Debate Council (MADUM), and Petronas Group Health, Safety, Security and Environment vice president, Zamri Japar.

Foreign Minister Mohamad Meets Counterparts From Syria, Azerbaijan, Yemen
KUALA LUMPUR, June 22 (Bernama) – Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan held bilateral meetings with his counterparts from Syria, Azerbaijan and Yemen on the sidelines of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Council of Foreign Ministers Meeting in Istanbul, Türkiye on Sunday. Mohamad met with Syria's Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani. During the meeting, Al-Shaibani briefed Mohamad on the current situation in Syria following the fall of the Assad regime, as well as the Syrian government's aspirations to rebuild the country. bootstrap slideshow 'This meeting is important for strengthening Malaysia–Syria bilateral relations,' Mohamad said in a post on his official Facebook page. Mohamad also held a bilateral meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan, Jeyhun Bayramov. 'This meeting opened the door to enhancing Malaysia–Republic of Yemen bilateral ties and to discuss regional issues of shared concern,' he said. Embrace Diversity As A Strength, Not A Source Of Division
KUCHING, June 22 (Bernama) -- Racial diversity should be embraced as a strength to enhance national unity, rather than as a battleground for rivalry or a means to showcase superiority and ego, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said. He said that in many other countries, such diversity has led to racial and religious hostility, eventually burdening the nation and negatively affecting the people. 'Unity within our multiracial society is increasingly essential to ensure that Malaysia remains strong amid the current uncertain global geopolitical landscape. 'Never underestimate the potential problems if you are disunited. The geopolitical conditions are so challenging and alarming. The future is never certain. But what we can ensure is a united Malaysia,' he said. Anwar was speaking at the 2025 Sarawak-level Gawai Dayak celebration dinner at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) here tonight, which was also attended by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg. Yang di-Pertua Negeri of Sarawak Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife Toh Puan Fauziah Mohd Sanusi were the guests of honour at the event.
