Majitha hooch tragedy exposed AAP govt's hollow promises on drug-free state: Bajwa
Taking a dig at the Aam Aadmi Party-led Punjab government's Nasha Mukti Yatra, the Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Punjab assembly, Partap Singh Bajwa, on Friday said that the AAP government's Yudh Nashian Virudh (War against Drugs) campaign has already proven to be a fiasco, and now they have come up with this.
Bajwa said the Majitha hooch tragedy that claimed 27 lives unmasked the AAP government's hollow promise to make Punjab a drug-free state. 'Chief minister Bhagwant Mann and AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal are launching the Nasha Mukti Yatra from Nawanshahr. However, both have failed awfully to make Punjab a drug-free state within the deadlines they decided. Why should the people of Punjab trust them now?' he asked in a written statement here.
The Congress leader said that Kejriwal had vowed to end the drug menace in Punjab within three to four months of forming the government and later, Mann also committed to making Punjab a drug-free state by the Independence Day of 2024. 'Have they eradicated the drug menace in Punjab? The answer is well-known to every Punjabi,' he said, adding, 'DGP Gaurav Yadav has now come up with another deadline to end the drug menace in Punjab.'
Bajwa claimed that instead of working on the ground, the AAP government believed in PR exercises by launching campaigns with fancy names.
What's Kejriwal's locus standi in Punjab, asks Bittu
Jalandhar: Union minister of state for railways and food processing Ravneet Singh Bittu on Friday questioned Arvind Kejriwal's locus standi in Punjab government's 'Nasha Mukti Yatra'.
In a statement, Bittu said Kejriwal holds no constitutional post in Punjab and the AAP government is anyway not in a position to face the people of Punjab after 27 poor people died after consuming spurious liquor, manufactured with smuggled methanol and 'sold under patronage of AAP leaders'.
'Kejriwal to come clean in Delhi liquor cases before giving advice to people of Punjab,' Bittu said.

However, it was smooth sailing for BJP candidate Rajendra Chavda in Kadi, who maintained a clear lead throughout and won the seat as he bagged 99,742 votes and defeated his nearest rival Ramesh Chavda by 39,452 votes, who polled 60,290 votes. The voting for the Visavadar and the Kadi Assembly seats of Gujarat was held on June 19. While Visavadar reported a turnout of 56.89%, Kadi saw a relatively lower figure at 57.90%. In Kadi, the seat fell vacant after the death of BJP MLA Karsanbhai Solanki, following which the party fielded Rajendra Chavda, against Congress's Ramesh Chavda, and AAP's Jagdish Chavda. The contest was seen as an opportunity to guage the Dalit community's voting patterns in the region. Bypoll results: UDF scores big in Kerala, TMC ahead in Bengal, AAP leads in Gujarat and Punjab
By-elections to assembly seats in Gujarat, Punjab, West Bengal, and Kerala on Monday delivered mixed results, with AAP gaining ground, TMC set to retain its seat in Bengal, and the Congress-led UDF scoring a key victory in Kerala. UDF snatches Nilambur seat In a severe blow to the Pinarayi Vijayan-led LDF government in Kerala, the opposition UDF on Monday surged ahead in the Nilambur Assembly by-election and was on the verge of victory as counting neared completion. UDF candidate Aryadan Shoukath, son of Congress veteran Aryadan Muhammed, secured a lead of 11,077 votes over CPI(M)'s M Swaraj. The bypoll was widely seen as a mid-term referendum on the LDF government. Independent candidate P V Anvar, the former legislator whose resignation triggered the bypoll, surprised many with his strong performance, securing over 18,000 votes. The BJP candidate, Mohan George, lagged far behind. Bye-poll results: AAP leads in Punjab's Ludhiana West, Congress in Kerala's Nilambur
The counting of votes for assembly bye-polls across five constituencies in four states began on Monday. These bye-elections were held on June 19. In Kerala's Nilambur constituency, the Congress' Aryadan Shoukath was leading against the Communist Party of India (Marxist)'s M Swaraj by 11,077 votes. The Aam Aadmi Party is leading in Punjab's Ludhiana West constituency and Gujarat's Visavadar seat. In Ludhiana West, the AAP's Sanjeev Arora is ahead of the Congress' Bharat Bhushan Ashu by 6,022 votes. In Kerala, the Nilambur bye-poll was held after the resignation of Communist Party of India (Marxist)-backed Independent legislator PV Anvar. In West Bengal, the Kaliganj bye-poll was held after the death of Trinamool leader Nasiruddin Ahmed. In Punjab, the Ludhiana West's bye-election followed the death of AAP MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi. The constituency saw a four-cornered contest involving Sanjeev Arora from the AAP, Bharat Bhushan Ashu from the Congress, Jiwn Gupta from the BJP and Parupkar Singh Ghumman from the Shiromani Akali Dal.
