Schumacher tells Hamilton he 'should have apologised' over Ferrari controversy

Ralf Schumacher has claimed that Lewis Hamilton should have said sorry to Ferrari for his radio remarks at the Miami Grand Prix. The seven-time champion was annoyed after team orders to swap positions with Charles Leclerc.
Chasing sixth place and stuck behind team-mate Leclerc, Hamilton's tyres were overheating, leading to his impatient outburst over team radio. Although Ferrari eventually acquiesced, Hamilton still couldn't contain his frustration.

To the message advising him of the imminent switch, he retorted: "Ah, have a tea break while you're at it! Come on!" Later, after Leclerc had regained the position and when told about Carlos Sainz closing in, Hamilton sarcastically replied: "You want me to let him pass as well?"

Hamilton later passed off his radio comments as nothing of any significance. Reflecting on the exchange, he said: " Fred [Vasseur, team principal] came to my room. "I just put my hand on his shoulder and was like, 'Dude, calm down, don't be so sensitive'.
"I could have said way worse things on the radio. You hear some of the things others have said in the past... Some of it was sarcasm.
"Look, you've got to understand we're under a huge amount of pressure within the car. You're never going to get the most peaceful messages coming through in the heat of the battle. And yeah, it was fine. We said we'll take it."
However, former Williams and Toyota driver Schumacher remains unconvinced by this explanation, reports the Express. Speaking on the Backstage Boxengasse podcast, he said: "Hamilton, that was somehow off the mark.

"If you really want to get past, that's one thing; he was faster at the time. But then give it back without a fight." Schumacher added that a more gracious approach would have suited Hamilton better, given his experience and age.
He added: "And afterwards, I don't pretend that I meant it sarcastically. Instead, I just say that I'm sorry. That shouldn't really happen with his experience and his age. He could have acted a bit more cleverly. I think that would have suited him better.
"Of course, the relationship [with Ferrari] is tarnished by such actions. That will stick, and he has to know that himself. There is now a need for clarification, and it will definitely be discussed – especially internally, how to deal with it in the future."

Ferrari speak out on driver exit rumours amid Lewis Hamilton difficulties

A struggle for results has seen the pressure around Lewis Hamilton swell at Ferrari, but he isn't the only driver at Maranello with his name making the headlines Ferrari boss Frederic Vasseur has grown weary of constant rumours suggesting Charles Leclerc might leave the team. He emphasised that the Monegasque driver is under a long-term contract with the Italian outfit despite persistent speculation about his future. Leclerc, 27, currently holds fifth place in this season's Formula 1 drivers' standings, one spot and 25 points ahead of his team-mate, Lewis Hamilton. The seven-time world champion joined Maranello amid much hype at the start of 2025, but Leclerc remains the dominant force for the team so far this season and has only finished behind Hamilton once. ‌ Both drivers were less than thrilled with their performance at the recent Canadian Grand Prix, where Leclerc and Hamilton finished fifth and sixth, respectively. "Every single interview from the beginning of the season, he's telling that he wants to stay with Ferrari. He wants to win with Ferrari. His future is with Ferrari. "But every single Monday, we have an article telling that, 'Charles will go next year', 'Charles will...' At one stage, I don't know what we have to do. I'm sorry – I can't repeat every single weekend the same things. But it is like it is." Leclerc penned a new deal with Ferrari in January 2024. The specifics of his contract's duration aren't known to the public, though there have been reports in the past suggesting it could be a five-year extension. ‌ Leclerc himself expressed being "very surprised" at claims of his unhappiness. I t was, of course, the vegan Lewis Hamilton who accidentally ran over a groundhog in Montreal last week. Not only was that an irony given his diet, but also a symbol of the bad luck and poor form that has punctuated his early Ferrari career. After Hamilton had initially visited the factory and met key members of the team in his opening weeks, sources close to him made it known that he thought they were ready to win a championship in the immediate future. But as soon as the car hit the track, it was evident that would not be the case this season. Ferrari believe there is more potential in the car than they have extracted at recent race weekends. That was illustrated in Montreal, when they were held back by a combination of mistakes — by Charles Leclerc in practice, which caused a crash — and poor fortune, in the case of Hamilton's groundhog incident, which caused significant floor damage to his car. Their drivers are keen for upgrades, which could come as soon as next weekend's Austrian Grand Prix and is certainly expected before Hamilton's home race at Silverstone on July 6.
