Florida softball's first-year standout named NFCA Freshman of the Year
Florida softball outfielder Taylor Shumaker was named the NFCA Freshman of the Year, the National Fastpitch Coaches Association announced Tuesday night at the 2025 NCAA Women's College World Series banquet in Oklahoma City.
The first-year standout was honored with the award based on a unanimous decision, making her the second-ever Gator to win it. The other to achieve the same accolade was outfielder Amanda Lorenz in 2016.
Shumaker is batting .389 and leads the team with 22 home runs, 72 runs scored, 17 doubles, and an .818 slugging percentage heading into the Women's College World Series; her 86 RBI so far this spring are tied for the best mark in the NCAA. She has also drawn 40 walks and is 18-for-19 in stolen base attempts.
The outfielder from Fullerton, California, is currently tied for the Florida single-season record in both home runs and RBI.
The NFCA Division I National Freshman of the Year award was created in 2014 to honor outstanding athletic achievement among Division I freshmen softball student-athletes.

Michigan State football has extended an offer to an in-state athlete that's trending on the recruiting trail. Mylan Griggs of Detroit announced on Sunday that he's received an offer from Michigan State. Griggs -- who is listed as an athlete -- announced the scholarship offer from the Spartans via a post on social media platform X. Griggs plays for Michigan high school powerhouse program Detroit Cass Tech, and is a member of the 2028 class. He is listed at 6-foot-0 and 160 pounds. Griggs is not yet ranked or rated on 247Sports or Rivals. But his interest on the recruiting trail would suggest he'll be a highly-rated prospect in due time. According to 247Sports, he now holds offers from Michigan State, Michigan, Kentucky, Louisville, Maryland, Miami (FL), USC, Wisconsin, Army, Kent State, Marshall, Miami (OH), Southern Miss, UMass, Temple and Toledo. Michigan State has picked up a lot of steam on the recruiting trail in recent weeks in their 2026 class efforts. Hopefully, that'll also translate to the 2027 and 2028 classes with prospects like Griggs. Texas A&M missed out on five-star edge rusher Richard Wesley out of Los Angeles, California, who shut down his recruitment after an official visit to Texas. If we're being honest, the Aggies were never truly in the running for Wesley. He took 10 visits between Oregon and USC, with Texas A&M managing just a single unofficial visit back in January. Wesley had a viral moment jumping into a pool with Oregon head coach Dan Lanning after committing to the Ducks, only to decommit two weeks later, hilariously. While a high-profile out-of-state recruit like Wesley choosing Coach Lanning wouldn't exactly shake things up in Aggieland, it's a different story when that level of talent commits to your in-state rival. When will LSU baseball resume College World Series game vs. UCLA?
LSU and UCLA will wait until Tuesday to complete Game 8 of the College World Series. Just before the start of the fourth inning on Monday night, the game entered a weather delay. After hours passed, CWS and NCAA officials opted to resume the game on Tuesday. The contest will pick up at 10 a.m. CT and be on televised on ESPN2. Advertisement After three innings, LSU leads 5-3. UCLA scored three runs in the first, but LSU answered, scoring four runs in the bottom half of the inning. Jake Brown started the comeback with an RBI single before Jared Jones launched a three-run homer. After Anthony Eyanson pitched two scoreless innings, LSU added another run with a Luis Hernandez RBI single. With Eyanson settling in, the delay came at a bad time for LSU. Now, the Tigers will be forced to adjust their pitching plans with Eyanson unavailable on Tuesday. LSU certainly wanted more than three innings from its star pitcher, but these things happen when weather gets involved. The LSU-UCLA loser will be in a tough spot. It will face a quick turnaround to play Arkansas in an elimination game later in the day.
