Teen's bravery hailed after alleged gang rape ordeal
A teenage girl has been praised for her strength in coming forward to police after allegedly being the victim of a six-hour gang rape by four young males.
The youths, aged between 14 and 19, are accused of repeatedly raping the 17-year-old at several locations across southwestern Sydney in December 2024.
Parts of the alleged gang rape were recorded on video.
Their alleged actions, which came to light as police put the two eldest members of the group before the courts on Wednesday, sparked widespread condemnation.
"This is an unimaginable ordeal for this young woman. The allegations are just abhorrent," Premier Chris Minns said.
Sex Crimes Squad commander Jayne Doherty said the quartet's ages were concerning.
"It beggars belief that, in this day and age, men would think to act this way towards a girl," she said.
The two eldest teens, now aged 18 and 19, faced court for the first time on Wednesday after being arrested on Tuesday with help from riot squad officers.
Police allege the incident was partially captured on video and shared among the teens.
"They had no right to act like this towards a woman," Det Supt Doherty said.
The girl was initially approached by a 16-year-old boy, unknown to her, at a shopping centre in Liverpool on a Sunday evening, police said.
He followed her to her car and she reluctantly let him inside before he allegedly began sexually assaulting her.
The boy asked to be driven to a park at a nearby suburb, which the victim agreed to, on the understanding he would get out of the car, police allege.
At the park, two other males got into the car and allegedly also sexually assaulted her.
A fourth male arrived in another car and the assaults continued as the girl was driven around for six hours, investigators allege.
About 11.30pm, when the men left the alleged victim in her car, she contacted a friend who took her to a police station to report the incident.
Detectives arrested a 16-year-old boy days after the rape and charged him with 19 sexual assault offences and five sexual touching offences.
The 14-year-old was arrested shortly after in Miller and charged with 10 offences including seven aggravated sexual assault offences.
Both were refused bail and appeared at a children's court in December.
Six months of investigations led detectives to raid homes in Sadleir and Heckenberg on Tuesday, arresting two other teenagers.
Adam Abdul Hamid, 19, was refused bail during a brief court appearance, with his lawyer telling reporters his client maintains his innocence.
The 18-year-old, who cannot be identified because he was a juvenile in December, was refused bail ahead of an application on Tuesday.
NSW Police footage of their arrests showed agitated family members of the alleged perpetrators shouting and swearing at officers.
Det Supt Doherty hailed "the strength of the victim".
"She was able to give a very detailed statement over a number of days, which gave us a number of opportunities to gather evidence," she said.
"She's very distraught (now) ... fortunately, she's supported by family, who are very strong and supportive of her."
Police Minister Yasmin Catley said she was horrified at the allegations and lauded the "tremendous work" of police in making arrests.
Western Sydney University criminologist Selda Dagistanli said some young men were being emboldened to perpetrate sexual violence because of a rise in problematic social media content.
"It is a cultural phenomenon everywhere and we can see that toxic misogyny and that toxic masculinity being promulgated by the Andrew Tates of the world," she told AAP.
"I don't think it's actually that unusual for boys that young to have attitudes of sexual entitlement."

CBS News New York's Jennifer Bisram looked into what's driving these numbers and what's being done to help the influx of survivors coming forward. Bill signed in 2024 expanded definition of rape According to the NYPD, reported rape crimes in the five boroughs are up 22% – 893 so far this year compared to 730 at the same time last year. "When you look at the rising rape numbers, it's because of the sweeping changes that went into effect to the rape laws," NYPD Special Victims Unit Director Kathleen Baer said. In 2024, the "Rape is Rape" bill was signed into law by Gov. Kathy Hochul, expanding the definition of rape to include all forms of non-consensual sexual contact. But CBS News New York learned even without the changes, there's still a 1-3% increase of reported rapes in the city. "One is absolutely too many ... We don't control the survivors, when they're ready to come forward to report," Baer said Baer said another reason for the increased reports is NYPD outreach. "We're out in the communities we serve. We're doing outreach. We're in schools. We're in hospitals. We're in community centers," she said. CBS News New York Baer says detectives have been taking reports at the city's five Family Justice Centers, too, where survivors go seeking legal and social services. "Those advocates can also accompany the survivor at each part of the investigation," she said. Survivors are also connected to counselors and advocates from Safe Horizon, a victim service organization that has been providing support to survivors for 40 years. "Sometimes police precincts might be a little intimidating ... They can share with us freely," said Victoria Maiello, with Safe Horizon's crime victim assistance program. "When someone's sex assaulted, their power is essentially taken away from them." Former New Yorker speaks out after attempted rape In the Bronx back in 2018, a walk home from work to decompress dissolved into a nightmare for Pritvi Sammy when a predator sprang from the shadows. "His masculine hand was over my mouth and my nose at the same time, and then he took the other hand that was free and he had the blade on my neck," Sammy said. "My heart was beating out of my chest. My mind was racing. My legs kind of turned like a jelly." Sammy said she was so terrified she couldn't even scream. "He's about to drop his pants, and I'm shaking at this point," she said. "I said, 'Please, let me say my last prayer.' And at this point, I dropped to my knees." Sammy said by some miracle, her attacker ran and she escaped being raped. She reported it right away, and police say surveillance video helped lead them to her attacker within 48 hours. "After that attack, I could never see the Bronx the same way again," Sammy said. She moved out of New York City but is bravely sharing her story to encourage others to come forward if they were ever sexually violated. "I'm at a place where I've come to peace with that, and I want to use my voice now to help others," she said. Sadly, advocates say there are still many victims too afraid to come forward. Three men guilty of repeatedly raping 12-year-old girl over three days
Three men are facing jail after being found guilty of rape after drugging a young girl and 'using her for their own horrendous gratification' over multiple days. Kevin Horvath, 26, and Ivan Turtak, 38, saw the 12-year-old victim in a supermarket car park in Dover and encouraged her to get in their car on August 11 2024, a Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) spokesperson said. She was then plied with drugs including crystal meth and amphetamine before she was raped and subjected to sexual acts by them and a third man, Ernest Gunar, 27, over a three-day period. The girl managed to escape from her captors after waking up before them on August 13. On Thursday, jurors at Canterbury Crown Court found the three men guilty of a series of sexual offences including rape of a 12-year-old girl after over 14 hours of deliberation. After trial, Gunar was convicted of two counts of rape against a child under 13; Turtak was convicted of one count; and Horvath was convicted of sexual assault. Horvath had already admitted three counts of rape against a child under 13, and one charge of assault by penetration of a child under 13, and Gunar, who is thought to be his cousin, had also admitted one charge of rape. Turtak initially denied rape but did admit taking indecent photos of a child. During the three-day period, whenever they went out in public, the girl was told that she would be killed if she tried to talk to anyone or tried to run away, a CPS spokesperson said. She was found by police on August 13 after escaping from the three men. Her phone had been taken from her and was later found in Horvath's car. Senior Crown Prosecutor Catherine Wear said: 'The three defendants took a 12-year-old from the street, took full advantage of her, plying her with drugs and using her for their own horrendous gratification. 'None of us can underestimate the impact this has had on her. When she was first found by police, she was unable to tell them what she had been put through, as she was so scared, and the details only came out gradually after that. 'Thanks to her courage in detailing what happened to her, despite the obvious distress that caused her, these three dangerous men have now been brought to justice for the appalling and callous crimes they committed against her. 'We hope these verdicts bring some small comfort to her as she starts to rebuild her life.' Horvath and Turtak, of Dover, along with Gunar, of Folkestone, will be sentenced on September 12.
