Community volunteerism crucial to keep cities clean: US Consul General

VISAKHAPATNAM: Jennifer Larson, US Consul General in Hyderabad, underscored the importance of community volunteerism in maintaining urban cleanliness during a Community Day event organised at Rushikonda Beach in Vizag on Saturday.
The event was conducted by the American Corner at Andhra University. As part of the initiative, Consul General Larson joined students and volunteers in a beach clean-up drive, helping collect litter and waste along the shoreline.
She appreciated the active participation of locals in the clean-up drive, and expressed satisfaction with the collaborative spirit displayed in support of environmental protection.
Andhra University Vice-Chancellor GP Raja Sekhar, who also took part in the event, said such programmes play a valuable role in supporting beach maintenance, and fostering civic responsibility. He acknowledged the dedication of the volunteers involved in the clean-up. Registrar EN Dhanunjaya Rao called for steps to make the beach plastic-free.
All volunteers were awarded certificates of appreciation. Several university and consulate representatives, including Director of Physical Education N Vijay Mohan, NSS Coordinator S Haranath, NCC Coordinator NM Yugandhar, US Consulate Public Diplomacy Officer Emilia Smith, American Spaces Coordinator Melissa Nandula, and AU American Corner Coordinator Paul Douglas were present.

1 2 Visakhapatnam: Andhra University has trained 1,200 students as yoga trainers, including those from its department of yoga, for the International Yoga Day event in Visakhapatnam on June 21, which would be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The training was conducted in two phases. In the first phase, selected students underwent a training programme at their respective college campuses, led by students and researchers from the AU department of yoga. In the second phase, held over the past few days, these students received advanced training at the AU yoga village on the beach road in Visakhapatnam, under the supervision of expert instructors. Their role will be to assist participants in performing yoga asanas correctly during the IYD event, offering guidance, and ensuring the exercises are carried out in a safe and synchronised manner. According to officials, about 200 foreign students of the university will also participate in the event. In all, a total of 17,000 students from Andhra University are participating in the programme. Prof K Ramesh Babu, head of the department of yoga, said they have prepared 1,200 trainers as suggested by the state govt. "These trainers have been selected for the university campus and affiliated colleges. They will assist yoga participants at their designated locations on June 21," said Babu. AU department of yoga and consciousness student B Sireesha, who is serving as the master trainer, said she has visited affiliated colleges of the university and provided training to students. "Students have shown a keen interest in the yoga curriculum and training. Yoga could be made a regular part of the academic curriculum," she said. Dr Sravani Ch, a professor of practice at the department, said due to the Yogandhra programme, yoga has reached youth on a wide scale. "Similarly, involving young people in such a prestigious programme is a positive development. Through this, not only do the youth learn yoga, but it also serves as an encouragement to practise it regularly," Dr Sravani opined. Vice-chancellor Prof GP Rajasekhar said in the context of Yogandhra and IYD programmes, students from Andhra University affiliated colleges received a valuable opportunity. Bundelkhand University has released the results of UP JEE 2025 on Tuesday, June 17, 2025.
