Mallojula Venugopal Rao alias Sonu, frontrunner to lead CPI (Maoist), may also give up arms
NAGPUR: CPI (Maoist) central committee (CC) member Mallojula Venugopal Rao alias Sonu (69), who was considered among the frontrunners for the banned party's top post after the gunning down of its general secretary Basavaraju, is likely to surrender before Gadchiroli police, top sources in anti-Naxal apparatus in Maharashtra said.
The Maoist veteran, a Telugu Brahmin with a BCom degree who had appealed to govt for a ceasefire, has lost his agility and leads a motley group which is no match for the elite C60 commandos of Maharashtra or Grey Hounds of Telangana. He is the elder brother of Mallojula Koteshwar Rao alias Kishenji, who was eliminated in an encounter near Kolkata in 2011.
Sonu is likely to lay down arms and join his wife Tarakka, who surrendered before Maharashtra police late last year and is currently staying at Gadchiroli police's rehabilitation camp.
On Thursday, CM Devendra Fadnavis hinted at large-scale surrender of rebels in Gadchiroli, which sources claim is a pointer to the possible laying down of arms by an entire 'platoon' commandeered by Sonu.
"Sonu is likely to be holed up in a forested hillock at Abujmarh. He saw the end coming a month ago and called for a truce," said an official source, adding that all cadres should immediately approach govt or security apparatus and surrender to avoid fatalities.
"Forces are prodding deeper and moving fast. The tables have turned, the guerrillas are under siege, they can no longer ambush with mines or grenades," said a senior police officer.
Though there's speculation about Sonu or his younger comrade Thippiri Tirupati alias Devji (60) heading CPI (Maoist), intelligence agencies feel the veteran Maoist doesn't have age on his side, and is inclined for truce. Apart from the tottering leadership, security agencies pointed out that the tribal cadres in Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra are rudderless.
"There's strong resentment among lower-rung tribal cadres against Telugu domination of CC and the way they force tribals to do menial jobs or push them into the frontlines," said an official, adding arrogance and rigidity of Telugu leadership in CC has led to their decimation.
Sources said there's a possibility of an exodus now, with tribal cadres ready to abandon the Maoist cause and return to the mainstream, rather than get neutralised. " Telugu hierarchy in CPI(Maoist) will not allow tribal cadres to lead the movement, even though they don't marshal the force or lead from the front," said a senior official who had interrogated a surrendered guerrilla.

Naxalite killed in encounter worked as cook in Chhattisgarh govt school: Police
Bijapur, One of the seven Naxalites killed during an anti-Naxal operation earlier this month in Chhattisgarh Bijapur district worked as a cook in a government school, police said on Sunday. Naxalite killed in encounter worked as cook in Chhattisgarh govt school: Police The cadre has been identified as Mahesh Kodiyam, resident of Irpagutta village under Farsegarh police station, they said. Seven Naxalites were neutralised by a joint team of security personnel in multiple encounters during the anti-naxal operation in the Indravati National Park area of Bijapur between June 4 and June 7. Maoists' central committee member Narasimha Chalam alias Sudhakar, who had a bounty of ₹ 40 lakh in Chhattisgarh, and Bhaskar alias Mailarapu Adellu, a special zonal committee member of the Telangana State Committee of Maoists who carried a reward of ₹ 45 lakh in Chhattisgarh and Telangana, were among the killed cadres. Police had then identified one of the other five cadres as Mahesh Kudiyam and said he was active as a party member of the national park area committee of Maoists and carried a reward of ₹ 1 lakh on his head. "Later, it came to light that Kudiyam was working as a cook assistant at a primary school in Irpagutta village. He was appointed by the village school management committee and was being paid a remuneration for this role till March 2025," the Bijapur police said in a statement. "The circumstances under which Kodiyam came into contact with senior Maoist leaders, like Sudhakar and Bhaskar, are currently under investigation. A thorough, impartial and professional inquiry is being conducted into all aspects of the case," it said. The police have again urged all individuals directly or indirectly associated with the outlawed CPI organisation to immediately sever all such ties. "Continued association with this extremist outfit poses a serious threat not only to public safety and regional peace but also to the lives and future of those involved," the release added. On Saturday, some villagers from Irpagutta, while talking to a mediaperson, claimed Kodiyam was not associated with the Maoist organisation and was working as a cook in a village school for preparing mid-day meal, for which he was getting a remuneration in his bank account. Kodiyam's family comprises his wife and seven children, the villagers said. This article was generated from an automated news agency feed without modifications to text.

Suspecting them of being police informers, Maoists murder 2 in Chhattisgarh village
Two residents of Chhattisgarh's Bijapur district were murdered on Saturday night by Maoists who suspected them of being police informers, officials said. Bijapur is the Chhattisgarh district worst affected by Maoist violence. The state has reported 22 civilians killed by Maoists this year and 71 last year. Saturday night's incident took place in Sendrobor and Yampur villages in the jurisdiction of Pamed police station. The area is in the southernmost area of Bijapur, towards the Telangana border, near the area where the Maoists' most dangerous battalion — Battalion 1 of the People's Liberation Guerrilla Army (PLGA) — is believed to be located. A security camp, Dharmavaram, is located seven kilometres from the villages, and the police station is around 10 km away. Last year, the Dharmavaram camp was attacked by the Battalion 1 with heavy gunfire and rocket launchers, injuring 12 jawans. The NIA recently filed a chargesheet in the case. An official said a group of Maoists came to the villages late at night in Saturday and murdered the two civilians, 'suspecting them to be police informers.' This comes just a few days after the insurgents killed three other civilians in Bijapur. The killings come amid an intensified push by security personnel against the Maoists, leaving the group at their weakest ever condition. Several Maoists, including top leaders, have been killed in recent years. The group's Politburo, its highest decision-making body, has shrunk to just three members: Mallojula Venugopal Rao alias Sonu, Thippiri Thirupathi alias Devuji, and Misir Besra alias Sagar. At the height of the insurgency, the Politburo had at least 11-12 members. The Central Committee members have also whittled down to 17 from 42 in 2007-08. Union Home Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to visit Chhattisgarh for a two-day trip starting Sunday. He is set to visit a security camp and chair a meeting to review ongoing anti-Maoist operations in the state, said Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma.

Sean Strickland issues strong reactions on reports of Donald Trump leading US military in bombing nuclear sites of Iran
Sean Strickland, Ted Cruz and Donald Trump 2025 (Photo via Getty Images) Former UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland spoke up through his posts on X about the bombings of nuclear sites in Iran by the US military. The initial reaction from the fighter was on the relationship shared between Israel and America, where he wrote - Israel "jump" Trump "how high. " Strickland's follow-up opinions were mostly mixed with claims of not being anti-Israeli, that he would still vote for Donald Trump , but also believes that both Israeli and American politics should be kept separate from each other. The fighter even took a dig at US Senator Ted Cruz's comment supporting Israel. Sean Strickland condemns the act of violence carried out by the US military, drags in US Senator Ted Cruz for his reasons for supporting Israel The fighter's latest post targeted US Senator Ted Cruz for the latter's viral comment, which stated the Senator's support towards Israel. Cruz, without much filter, stated that it was God who had asked him to support Israel. Strickland, while revealing the real reason behind the unwavering support, wrote, 'I'm not anti israel and id vote for Trump again... But we need to get Israel out of America politics... @tedcruz "God told me to support israel" really or was it the millions you got from them? I bet you've never even raid the Bible you slimimg f*ck' Known for his sociopolitical comments, Sean Strickland once again strikes beyond his role in the Octagon as an informed citizen of the state. In his recent series of posts on X, the fighter wrote about the recent step taken by US President Donald Trump while siding with Israel against Iran. On Saturday evening, i.e., June 21, 2025, the President announced the successful obliteration of 3 major nuclear sites in Iran—Fordow, Natanz, and Esfahan. Reflecting on the act, a mixed reaction was received from countries across the world, with some supporting the extreme step and a section condemning it. Strickland makes himself heard with some mixed, unapologetic comments posted on X. Sean Strickland issues his reasons for keeping the politics of Israel and America separate Following his dig at the political relationship shared between Israel and the USA, the fighter's next statement highlights the time when the US was provided with information involving Iraq's supposed possession of Weapons of Mass Destruction. Strickland builds on his reasons why Israel should be kept out of American politics. He wrote, 'Do you remember the first time our greatest ally said Iraq had WMDs? Knowingly lying to us to get us involved in a war. No Israel blood was spilt, no trillions of dollars of debt for their children. The debt that enslaves generations of Americans off a known lie.' Sean claims that most of the American politicians have been bought by the Israeli government, which has indirectly affected the citizens of the state. Even though he would vote for Trump yet again, however, the intermixing of Israeli and American politics is not something that the former middleweight champion approves of. While Israel feels strongly supported after the recent act by the US military, countries like New Zealand, Australia, Mexico, Cuba, and Iran themselves have continued to forward the talks of de-escalation and believe that diplomacy would bring more good to the area than violence.
